I'm writing off promotion

It is a little early to write top two off just yet, it's extremely unlikely now that we will finish in top spot as you can probably only afford to lose about seven games all season and even if we do get the signings we clearly need that is a big ask to only lose three more from now until May.

however looking at the previous seasons you can afford to lose around ten and still get up in second place.

All does depend on if we sign players of course and that's looking like a big IF at the moment.

I know I'll be told it's ridiculous at this stage and defeatist to say it but why?.....

This set of players keep proving that they don't have what it takes to be competitive at the top end of the division or to find any sort of consistency. Furthermore the club and its directors prove that we neither have the finance or nous to build a team that can. We have the same shortcomings every season, we repeat the same mistakes EVERY season. Please offer me a shred of hope by telling me why it's suddenly going to change and what you have to base it on.

Perpetual positivity and blind faith might make some of you feel better but it does nothing to improve the situation. Telling them it's alright whilst continuing to walk through the turnstile simply reinforces their belief that the club can passively wait for something to turn instead of making it happen.

How many more managers are going to be the fall guy for a poorly run football club with no understanding of what it takes to be successful. Sheffield United Football Club has found its level and belongs in the third division.

I'm sorry Nigel but you took the wrong job, like the supporters you deserve better.

SPOT ON. ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON.

I remember the excitment felt when we signed done and brayford last january it was the first time i felt excited about our chances of promotion all season
If we just get in that goalscoring centre forward we need and a centre half defensive midfielder we will romp this league

We didnt ,we dicked around trying to sign o grady and didnt bring anyone else in

Done and brayford fid ok but didnt make a massive impact and the team just fell away in the now familliar half hearted style we have all become accustomed to and that was that

Clough got the chop ,adkins came in murphy was sold sharp sammon came in and the side just remains exactly the same

Whats the saying about repeating the same actions and expecting different results ?
done did ok and then got benched for a mystery injury tbf

He hasnt done well enough to guarantee himself a starting place in his preferred position
Very harsh on Done fella
Most of the time he was playing lone frontman under Clough a role totally alien to him but he still did himself proud chasing down everthing.
He is our number one frontman first man on the sheet for me.

The shred of hope is easy - because it is in the future, and unless you know Dr Who and can take a trip on his tardis - no one actually knows.

Adkins - might, just might make something of this motley crew we have.
It might be suddenly transposed by Dean Hammond in CM, if he ever signs.
Done and eventually Brayford might be a catalyst - again we don't know.

The hope this season, unlike last - is there are no teams good enough to get out in front and stay there like brizzle last season. Us/Coventry/Wigan "were" capable but all three have had indifferent starts.

We might step up, we might not and there is still plenty of time to grow into the season - MK/Rotherham/Preston - even the pigs did it as the season progressed.

We just have to hope we get better and games like Gillingham/PV finally gets the message through to some of our none performing seals, purporting to be footballers.

In defence of your OP - sure games like PV are really hard to take - just don't give up..............just yet :)

i like him too and agree he should be first pick i was actually speaking from.an overall bigger picture point of view with regards the teams finishing place but from a personal perspective
He was dropped ,missed most of the end of last season through injury and in his preffered position two other players have been signed who seem to be above him in the pecking order
So from that point of view his impact has been ok if not spectacular
He also looks like the gay fella on gogglebox

A few weeks ago people were very positive of promotion and now people are positive of
not getting promotion, does this mean if we go on a run of good results in the next 6/7
games we will be positive of getting promotion?

I won't. There's a fair chance most of the teams above us will have good runs too so we'll probably still be out of the top two.

Six or seven wins on the trot will get us back in there but....

...have we got six or seven wins in us at the moment?

Can never say never with football but I doubt it.

So where is the problem ?

The problem is ..... and has been for the last 3 seasons, that the squad we have currently is fine ON PAPER, however, in practice they are ineffective in this agricultural division !!

The trouble is that the management / Board at BDTBL will not accept what is staring them in the face every week ...... its like the emperors new clothes syndrome

Many supporters said at the start of hostilities in August "this squad will NOT get us promoted" ...... how long before those in authority at the Club act decisively to address that ....... o_O

Currently ..... we're looking like we will be fighting to get 6th place so we can lose again in the play-offs .......

I know people are feeling down, and with good reason, but I still look at the other teams
and reckon over the rest of the season we will prove to be better than most if not all of em,
I realise that nothing is guaranteed but we will improve, trust me?

I am all things very positive , but , my take is that we may improve but not enough . The core set of the squad have been together last season and this season . Top teams even in this division seem to have a telepathic understanding of situations , even before they happen . We have still got the last season Yoevil away syndrome in most matches .

Sometimes it does look like they have just met up on a saturday morning , for a game of footy.

Never mind how good and skilful we look in training , we just cannot cut the mustard on match day , and unfortunatley , i cannot see it changing .

Can we stop saying posters want us to 'just sign anyone'.... They don't... What they want is for Utd to have more than one target for a position lined up .... And then complete a deal in a reasonable amount of time.

And why is it when we try to sign someone there 'are three parts to the deal that complicates matters'.... But when someone wants to sign our player ... We unbuckle our belts... Roll down our trousers and bend over the nearest barrel and the deal is completed?

Don't forget the vaseline mate.

Don't get this, wiz. Who, apart from Brayford, is due back? And he was hardly pulling trees up before his injury. Don't expect to see the JB who thrilled us when he came in on loan. He was playing for a move back then. Now? He's part of the disinterested brigade.

I think that's harsh. It must be frustrating for him being better than everyone else, but I think after a long spell on the sidelines he'll be chomping at the bit to get back. Add to that he dropped a division, he'll be desperate to get back up.

His extremely attractive misses seemed to think so when we spoke to her at Swindon anyway.

Did you think Nigel Clough had been in the job long enough to address these issues? If so I don't recall you saying so

The disappointing thing about all this is that I don't think Clough would be doing any worse than Adkins.

Ahh but 2 or 3 consecutive wins and it's promotion nailed on again.

I would despair if some of the posters on here worked at SUFC.

What's the saying when the going gets tough? Let's just surrender and not even bother trying.

We didn't get promoted with: Evans, Williamson, Lowton, Quinn, McDonald & Maguire in the team with 5 average players around them.

We've replaced them with Sharp, Flynn, Freeman (until Brayford returns), Woolford/Adams, Baxter/Coutts & McEveley and 5 average players around them.

Granted the quality of opposition has changed but surely people can't be blinkered enough to think we can do better with this set of players?! Sharp will score 20 and make a few so is a 66% replacement for Evans and Brayford is an adequate replacement for Lowton on his day but the rest are like replacing platinum with tin.

There are various board threads on here and I'm directing this last bit more towards them but it doesn't take a millionaire businessman to work out why we're now an outside play off bet compared to a top 2 contender does it?

I do. Steve Davies would be up front on his own.

I don't intend to back Clough...but we would have conceded much less, but not scored as many...net result about the same, for me....another word for it is 'rubbish'

Doncaster lost 12
8 at home

Yes there was thread about this a few weeks back, that season was the one where everyone was much of a muchness, I am hoping that it will be similar this season. Otherwise you really do need to be losing around ten and no more to make top two.

But we don't work at The Lane. The players do and they're the ones that need to get tough. Us getting tough won't change anything.
