Does that mean you have a tattoo then :)
I have many tattoo's and am also "working class" by my own definition.
For many people tattoos are a personal statement regardless of class. In many cultures tattoos are an integral part of beliefs
and their religion. I agree some tattoos are not to many peoples tastes but to pigeon hole them as working class is a little narrow minded!

UTB!

anyone who works for a living is by definition 'working class'.. the middle classes like to think themselves as special but they are simply higher paid working class with a higher credit rating due to their property usually being worth more.. there are three types of people in this country.. the Norman overclass.. the remaining majority (working class) and the underclass who live on benefits and the black market..the middle class is an illusion created for aspirational working class snobs who, because they have a BMW on credit suddenly think they are somehow related to the Duke of Devonshire:mad:

Utter horseshit.

My definition of working class. If you were sacked tomorrow and could survive for 2- 3 months without a job, you're middle class. If you can't, you're working class

How can you be working class and not work ?

I have been all the lot at some stage so what does that make me ?

That's the point. If you can't fulfil your immediate needs for a short period without a job, then you're you are pretty much living a hand to mouth existence (in most cases).

That doesn't mean you're working class. What about the stately homes, owned by what most would agree to be upper class. When the death duties hit most were forced to open their doors to the paying public or be sold as the new owners couldn't afford to pay the death duties, like Longleat or Chatsworth to name but two. As they were living "hand to mouth" in as much as they were strugggling for money does that make them working class too?

What about those in the middle classes who have loaded themselves up with massive portgages and other debts? When they are made redundant from their higher management position before they're 50 and unable to find work and struggling for money does that make them suddenly working class?

It's far more complicated than three simple classes. What about those who've been happy on the dole for all their adult life, never having worked and never intending to work? Does that make them upper class? They're not working class if they've never worked, are they?

I'm working class because i work hard, do the shit hours at work, do the overtime because i know one day my life will bear the fruits of my labours.

An absolutely fantastic post. Totally agree.

Brampton's the only place that makes Barnsley look like a Garden City :D

It's all about your relationship to the means of production don't you know ((C) Karl Marx).

If you have to sell your labour to those who own means of production in order to survive you are a proletarian (i.e. working class). If you own means of production and can live off the profits you gain from that ownership, you are a member of the bourgeoise (i.e. middle class). Owning a few shares where you could not actually live off the accruing dividends, does not make you a member of the bourgeoise!

Marx also accounted for what people here refer to as the underclass (and which he called the "lumpenproletariat") - i.e. poor people not in regular employment and who live hand to mouth via casual work, prostitution and crime (no benefits in his day) and the aristocracy (i.e. "upper class") who lived off landed property, though he expected those classes to wither away as society formed into 2 classes of proletarians and bourgeoise.

Obviously, Marx's definition is a purely objective one based on his subjective definitions. It takes no account of what people actually feel. Clearly, most lawyers, GP's and bank managers would not feel themselves to be "working class" , though on Marx's definition they are.

If your working class you get sacked
If your middle class you have terminated your contract been given 30,000 pounds and can keep your company car
If you are upper class you have due to health reasons, been forced to resign been given 1,500,000 pounds a pension of 300,000 pounds a year for life , can keep you 500 Benz, and you can start your new better paid job tomorrow.

If you are working class, you get on the phone to Claims Direct for compensation.
If you are middle class, you consult your lawyers concerning a constructive dismissal case.
If you are upper class you are a lawyer.

You obviously don't know many lawyers :-)
