... would that instantly change the way we play?

The way some people are singling him out for criticism, it sounds as though they believe this.

I'm interested to know...

No and its not the problem with the team. The problem is the manager!!!

it would mean that we wouldnt have the worst central midfielder in the league in our team, it would mean i wouldnt have to watch him being shit every week, i could concerntrate all my energy into watching quinn being shit instead.

it doesnt matter though, no one in their right mind would take him from us

I don't think we should sell him because I think he certainly has his uses. However, I wouldn't have picked him last night. It was never going to be his kind of game.

And that is exactly the sort of constructive criticism which I love from our fans .....

A number of teams have enquired about him in the past.

Pitty we didn't accept any offers.

Would getting rid of Monty provide an instant turn around in our fortunes?

Yes or no?

Who knows?

Make a guess... it's all we can do about a lot of things.

Many people can talk in black and white except when they're asked a direct question :)

I'm asking for flags pinned to masts here.

Including one established Premiership team who got as far as to talking to the player.... only for the whole lot to fall through due to an unnoticed injury.

Still, I'm sure a number of our fans know more about football than the geezer in question and his scouts.

I think if we used money we got for him we could easily replace him. So I am going to say yes we would be better off.

Although I cant see people paying money for Monty to be honest.

I meant instantly.

If Nick Montgomery did not play on Saturday - would we be better, play better and win?

Cant play any worse than last night.

So yes Id say we would be better. :)

We haven't dominated the game in midfield since Browny left, do you really think it'll ever change?

And no things wouldn't have been different if Monty didn't play.

And Solomon, you are so blind it's unbelievable.

I don't think any sane manager would buy Monty. Monty is not the only problem we have by a long way but if he was not in the team our ball retention would see a marked improvement. He is maybe the worst "footballer" and I use that term loosely in the CCC, can't knock his effort and energy but everything else is way under par even his tackling, most of those were fouls last night but he did put one good tackle in unfortunately it was on Brian Howard. A shit player in a shit team.

YES!!!!!!!!

We have not had a midfield for years, HE is the main problem.

Im not saying its all down to him, I dont think we need anyone on that position (defensive midfield). We are 'supposedly' one of the better teams in this league, at home why do we base our formation around the other team? We should be playing with two creative midfielders and leeting the other team worry about us.

I know they were both only on the pitch for 5 minutes but wth Howard and Hendrie on the pitch there was someone wanting the ball in midfield, an option for thr defenders to pass to (Monty was still on the pitch though, I think).

If Blackwell insists on playing this formation could we have someone who has at leat an ounce of ability?

Please?

Seems to me the first highlighted statement contradicts the second.

I guess our fortunes would change, we'd more than likely conceed more goals as no-one is able to break the play up and disrupt opposition runs from midfield like Monty does so the opposition would get more chances to score.

Yes or no?

You could say that about a lot of our players!

One player is not going to make a significant difference. But as someone has already stated monty was definatley not suited to playing against donny, he cant keep up with the sort of football they play and he has no creative flair to create a goal (yes I know he is a defensive midfielder, but do we need one?). Surely we can find someone else that can take up his place in the team?

Lincoln Blade

We went 9 games un-beaten with Monty in CM.....

I have so much more respect for Montgomery when I hear what people say about him.

Last night, he was getting slagged to shit, but continued to work hard and trying to do something for the team. The rest of the team dissappeared and hid away, but no, Montgomery kept going, and going and going.

He knows himself he's not the best technical player at the club, he never will be, but at least he shows a bit of fight and determination to do well and create something because nobody else had the bottle to step up to the plate and try it.

Away from home, he's brilliant. He doesn't have to be flashy, he can just sit in front of the back 4 and win the ball back with no pressure from the fans. At home, he's asked to push forward but he's not quite got the technical ability to do it. Plus of course the additional pressure of fans moaning at him no matter what he does.

A good assessment there Daz.

Some will not agree but there you go. Until we get better players he will have a role.

No selling montys not the answer.

Id sooner have a team of tryers than a team of can play wont play.

got to look at the tactics and manager

I agree with him and I've been very critical of Monty over the years.

Got to say I'm the opposite. I'd rather have a team full of talented players, then it's up to the manager to motivate them.

Monty's a tryer, he's been a professional "footballer" for going on 10 years, yet still fails to play simple passes, control simple balls into him and his positioning leaves a lot to be desired, which would suggest he cannot be trained, hence my preference for players with ability and a footballing brain.

In answer to the original question, yes I think we would improve drastically without Monty in the team. It is like playing with a man down when he plays because when another of our midfielders has the ball he is usually stood bang next to them meaning he isn't space waiting to receive a pass, but when he has the ball, we have to get another player within 5 yards in the hope that Monty can find him with a pass. He only win's a small percentage of tackles he goes in for and his lack of footballing nouse means he's usually chasing the ball but 5 yards behind the play.

I'll probably get slated for this but I'd have Howard and Hendrie in central midfield. Both can put a tackle in when required, Hendrie moreso, and both have the ability to move the ball forward or retain it if there's nothing on further up the pitch.

Am I alone in thinking that isolated shouts of dissent or insults toward the players don't actually have that much of an effect?

Bramall Lane is a pretty big place. No matter how loud it sounds to you when someone's yelling down your earhole, it's not that likely that the players on the pitch will hear much distinctly. If a couple of people around you are shouting abuse at a player, of course it's going to make a racket, but I can't hear what someone on the John Street Stand is shouting from the Kop, unless they make a hell of a racket.

Even if the players did hear some of the dissent aimed towards them, who's to say that it won't improve the way they play? No one knows, and for someone to make a statement such as 'booing doesn't help' is a little arrogant. For all you know, it might spur them on to improve their game.

I was reading an interesting article about this the other day in some kind of motivational rubbish that constitutes my daily post at work.

I'll see if I can find it and post it... but it stressed the importance of confidence to professional sports players and the extent to which being in the right frame of mind can make all the difference to how they perform. I know Jonny Wilkinson "visualising" his kicks was one of the example.

How much booing affects each player's confidence is down to their constitution of course... I'd hazard a guess that it wouldn't help Cotterill amongst others. He looks like he's shit scared of his shadow at the moment.

I'll have a root around the rainforests on my desk and see if I can find it...

Which do you think would have a more positive effect on a player... the roar from 26k people behind you supporting you or a collection of people shouting insults at you or booing? Personally, I think the first option.

Especially bearing in mind the majority of footballers are young males, stereotyped for being big headed/arrogant.

You are completely right, in some cases, booing and abuse might make them better, but I'd hazard a guess that examples of this are much rarer than when people are behind them.

I know Mr Naughton has been subject to direct personal abuse online since Tuesday night, which is a perfect example of the mentality of some of our fans at the moment.

Thing is, if you sell montgomery, then you are 1 step closer to blackwell having no option but to play a footballer, sell quinn aswell and blackwell will have to play a couple of footballers in there, so yes it would be an instant improvement
