Maybe Frank's lack of ambition , desire for the club to make progress , and satisfaction with being bang-average is something to do with the 'Sheffield mentality'.
If you don't seek progress , preferring to stand still , you are actually going backwards in a relative sense.
Because the natural human drive is to make progress , exemplified by cities like Manchester , Leeds & Liverpool.

Citing two promotions and three PL seasons (2 painfully shit ones) misses the point that these were golden opportunities , ruined by some terrible recruitment and - in the case of 23/24 , deliberate parsimony by the owner seeking to "cash-out".

Sticking with the club , whilst knowing such wasted opportunities are highly unlikely to come again anytime soon , shows admirable loyalty.

I don't see how vocalising the obvious disappointment is in any way deserving of criticism from fellow fans who like to stick their heads in the sand.

The key to their success is because they managed to stay up for over 2 seasons. That seems to be the key to sustaining PL status.
How they achieved that; Luck? Spending Big? Good Strategies? none of it matters. They survived and are now rich with squads worth 100s of millions. I firmly believe Covid derailed this for us.

Brentford and Bournemouth have now assembled squads that even if relegated, are easily good enough to come straight back, OR, they can cash in on 3 or 4 players to generate >£100m to spend in the Championship.

If Forest and Wolves drop this year, they'll do the same and bounce straight back.

The 2021 relegation for us was our missed opportunity

Don't forget a League cup win at Wembley and played in Europe. Something we'd all kill for at BDTBL.

Donny are my second team and I've seen them win two trophies in finals, including Leeds at Wembley. A fantastic day so, when others can finish the job in finals, the only question that needs answering is 'why can't United?'

Wednesday aren't streets ahead, and you know that. Right now, Sunday is about who is less cr*p on the day. Nothing more.

Not at all. You couldn't be more wrong if you tried and, to be fair, you're really giving it some effort.

I think it's right that we have the biggest play off failure rate in the EFL. Why?

Systemic failure that says a great deal.

I'm 61. I'd like to see us lift a trophy before I depart this life.

We've had numerous opportunities and blown every single one, including the recent opportunities to grow the club on the back of recent PL promotions.

I think it's pretty hard to say with any certainty how we would have performed as there's so many variables.

What I would say is that I very much doubt we'd be where Sunderland are.

By all accounts we would have got new investors onboard so it's not out of the realms of possibility that we would have spent big(ish) to try and make a go at it but there's still the issue of how that money would have been spent.

Without a loosening of the wage structure we would have been left with paying large fees for unproven players ie Brewster or taking punts on players with "a history" ie Mousett.

I also wouldn't have held much hope with Wilder at the helm either with that money. This isn't a dig at him as a manager in general btw for all you cultists but he has been pretty poor when spending higher amounts of money.

Spot on with Wilder…. He was fantastic for us from 2016 until 2020 with no money and in fairness he only had limited cash in summer 2024 and did a good job then too. But anything over £4 million and his track record is woeful. But right now and for the next few seasons when we will have no money and will have to ‘wheel & deal’ - he’s perfect for that.

You're a 30 year old Wednesday fan versus a 30 year old United fan... What have they achieved ?

They can't remember PL football. Their only achievements in the last 30y are 3x promotions from the third tier and 2 failed play offs in the Championship.

In those 30years, 3 of our 4 promotions were to the top flight. We've also been to 4x FA Cup Semi Finals and 2x League Cup Semis.

Pigs have been to 1x League Cup Semi in that time and zero FA Cup Semis.

Of course they did have success in 1991 and some high placed PL finishes, but it's a long time ago.

I'm 41 now. I can't remember them winning the League Cup - I was 7.
I have a vague recollection of them beating us at Wembley in 93. At 9yo, I was more bothered about playing out with my mates than watching the game on TV.

Wednesday fans my age have never had a legal alcoholic drink in the PL.

The past generation has 100% been United's. And we gave them 6 years

Failing to replace JoC and wasting £30m in fee & wages for Brewster , plus failing to deal with the Lundstram cunt was far more influential

And I get to be 30 too??! 🥳🥳🤣 Wembley 93 was on my 11th birthday, and I was there. Scarred me for life and made sure no human could possibly hate the pigs more than me. From that day on I've prized a Wembley win over anything (maybe a European finish would equal it buts that's about it).

I do agree that its been nice to have some of our decent championship seasons whist they've been shit I guess it's swings and roundabouts for what people would rather experience.. but for me Wembley is pretty much everything.

The point I was making is to counter when people say they're better. They're not. They have finished higher than us 6 times in 25 years

Covid my arse nowt to do with it more about player recruitment wage capping wasting money
JOC never replaced yet 20 odd million spent on a potential future international striker and that same strategy strikes again with the same manager in January 25

Correct. Our wasting huge amounts of cash from the PL times is a much bigger reason for our drop offs, PL embarrassment and current position than Covid ever was.

Covid is a very easy deflection tool to move the conversation away from the clubs own failings and from those responsible.
