I would suggest the fans of SUFC be very careful what they wish for.

And to qualify that statement, two words to the wise. Pardew & Alan.

Wonder just how many of the Geordiies that hated the bloke and largely forced him out would now welcome him back with open arms !

Just a thought ;).

Good luck to our lads Monday night.

If Clough goes due to failure to reach the clubs objective then so be it

It won't be down to last Thursday night, it will be down to a season of bizarre decision making followed by bizarre decision making

The issue of "the club needs stability" is a non starter imo. The club became stable the day the Prince came on board. Clough's remit is promotion. Fail and he should pay the price imo

We are no nearer to having a promotion winning squad this season than we were last season, despite 20+ signings and spending millions

And the 4 full backs lining up as our defence Thursday night for arguably our most important game of the season said it all for me

It really isn't good enough is it?

How many Viila fans want Lambert back?
How many Baggies want Pullis out?
et al.

another pointless post.

What are the reasons for the success of Pullis and Sherwood, what do they do differently .
From listening to one of those in November last year, made me realise me what an utter anachronism Clough is.

Pardew, Pulis, Sherwood have all gone in and turned clubs round, as Clough did last season. What often happens is that they can't carry it on the season after.

Clough had the momentum from last season but has failed to achieve his objective (tomorrow night aside) given relatively huge resources for this division. There are various reasons as debated already about how things haven't panned out but it's a tough call for the Board if things don't go right tomorrow. They have to be convinced that either Clough will bring promotion given what they have seen this season and or take another chance in the managerial lucky dip which is arguably more risky.

If we don't do it this year, Phipps should be straight on the phone and speaking to Warburton.

I like sport metrics/the study of sport data. Some of it is fascinating stuff, and is growing in football (it is massive in the US sports, as you might imagine).

There have been a lot of studies into whether changing manager works. The consensus is that it doesn't make sense in the short-term in the middle of a season (because decisions are always made during a blip, and there is always a regression to mean, see here and here), but does tend to work better during the offseason, but often doesn't work and that the change rarely makes a big difference, and is very unlikely to make more than 15% difference (here).

IF we don't go up, being rational about it, I think a change of manager might be a wise idea (even though I think Clough staying on is better than the unknowable alternative we currently have!), because I'm willing to recognise that he simply won't be given time by the fans. I don't see us walking the league, and any slip up next season (and there will be a blip!) will spark a backlash, and its better to change manager now than in the middle of the season. That said, I'd obviously prefer us to go up and for Clough to stay for the long term. I do think we are making progress, I think we are playing the right kind of football and buying the right kind of players. It would be a shame if Clough is forced out (either way)!

I love stats to death, but unfortunately the data sample is so small, likewise with the margins in football between success and failure.
There are just way too many variables which influence small samples,.
Sometimes the old adage you don't have to be a good manager, just a lucky one, still has more than a ring of truth.
It probably doesn't surprise me that changing a manger when the transfer window is open produces better result than when it is closed.
That seems entirely logical,

However there are some managers who clearly focus on key areas right from the start of their appointment (regardless of the timing) and build from there.
This bring them immediate tangible improvements and success.
Pullis is my hero here. I wish I could have recorded his interview last year. I'd play it to the board and every Blade fan, let them here what a top manager does.
Talk about chalk and cheese , it was just about everything Clough doesn't do.

.

If we don't go up I think Clough will stay and will be given first 10 games of next season then a decision will be made on his future.
Well I hope the board is more sensible than that.

We'll need to make a firm decision on the close season, but he has to get to at least Christmas if the decision is to stick with him. Sacking after 10 games would be another halfway house stupid decision along the lines of the 2010 debacle.

Judge us after 10 games

It's only 10 games - wait til we have all those home games in November.

Let's see where we are at Christmas.

We will sort it in the JTW and let's watch us begin to soar after we get some quality in.

Now tell me which season that's from.

Fucking all of them :(

Is Alan Pardew such an amazing irreplaceable manager? No not really, the problems at Newcastle are at board level highlighted by the fact they gave John Carver the job! Has they replaced Pardew with a half decent manager they would have been safe in mid table weeks ago.

People leave jobs in all careers all the time cause nothing lasts forever. The key is replacing them with people as good or preferably better!

Can't really not compare us to the mess Newcastle are in.

An owner who is a total bellend using a club as a massive billboard for his business and only appoints managers that do exactly what he says.

Agree with you a bit, I've not lost faith in Clough yet (although I think tomorrow is going to be one of my worst Blades days on record).

The Newcastle fans had a banner that said summat like:

"We don't demand a team that wins, we demand a club that tries".

Next season I think it's fair for us Blades to demand a team that wins. Last season was over before Christmas, I'll give Clough this season as experience but next season he'll have had enough time, budget and backing to make it happen and we should see success if we've got the right man.

Would the board allow him to spend the 2015/16 summer transfer budget on players then sack him after 10 games leaving any potential new recruit with his squad and no money to spend ? Or would they refuse him funds and judge him on the imbalanced square peg in round hole team of central defenceless dwarfs he has built up and judge him on their 10 game performance?

This is 'ironic' isn't it :?

Last I heard
He put #150 million in interest free when Newcastle were relegated where it has remained and Newcastle still have all their assets. Handy things like football grounds!
Sort of the exact opposite of what Judas has done.
And how do the respective divisions compare!
Has he appointed Danny 'relegation' Wilson, or Cackwell etc etc :(

Give me that 'bellend' any day :(

I'm betting win lose or draw?, clough will be here next season. If we're not around automatic in the final transfer window, he will fall on his sword.

If we don't go up and keep our squad intact and they remain injury free then I think we may have a chance next year. I also think Clough should stay, at least until Christmas, then we reassess.
Whatever happens I will be there, yet again, for another season of ....well who knows?

Just think of the recruitment possibilities if Clough goes. 88 league clubs other than Walsall, Blackpool and Derby County and dozens of nations other than Scotland. The tricky part is finding the players that are likely to be fully fit for more than 3 games in a row.

That's the stick or twist problem. This squad is both bloated and a million miles from an automatic promotion one. So you either give him even more money, or waste time being proved right on the first point.

It leaves them / us in a really difficult position.

When Clough was appointed I was full of optimism I thought great we can now build for the next 5 years with a shot at the prem in this time , what I have gleaned he has learnt nothing from his god of a dad but even if we don't go up this month if he recognises he needs 3 centre halves, 2 hard centre midfielders and 2 forwards in the summer and clears out some of the 10/15 "fringe" players then give him till end September by then we should have played around 8 games of importance and he will have had close to 2 seasons of games to sort out his squad ? So in the meantime let's get behind everybody at the club till the end of may (undefeated will do :D)
Then we have all summer to slag Clough, the club and yes dare I say it each other :oops:

If we don't go up and keep our squad intact and they remain injury free then I think we may have a chance next year.

We haven't had bad injury problems, we can't fill key positions with specialists and we've ended the season in poor form, as far from automatic promotion as relegation.

So a serious question, but based on what do you form that opinion?

UTB

If all fit this is what i'd go with next season if still in this league.

.............Howard or New Keeper..............

...Brayford..New CB...New CB..Harris.....

...Adams....Basham..Wallace...Murphy..

...................Done.....Mcnulty...................

Now i think with the 3 additions plus 3 or 4 better fringe players who can come in when required this would be good enough to be serious challengers next season but where will we get the money from to get these players? That's one hell of a question.

I agree except I wouldn't include Wallace until there is some evidence that he will recover from injury and will be able to play for a significant part of a season - waiting on him has already cost us this season so new CM.
