If not Beattie then who?

On the O/S:

"Danny Wilson has cleared up United's position regarding rumours that he is about to make a move for former Blades striker James Beattie.

Amid a large amount of media speculation, Wilson confirmed that a brief conversation had taken place recently regarding the former Stoke and Everton centre forward, who was released prior to the transfer deadline by Glasgow Rangers.

Wilson said: "I spoke very briefly with James about his position after it was announced that he had left Rangers.

"He informed me that he was not fit and that he didn't know when he would be. I expressed an interest in him keeping us updated as to his fitness and left it at that. I would imagine a number of clubs will be interested in keeping up with his progress."

Former fans favourite Beattie, now 33, scored 34 goals in 65 appearances for United after he was signed by then Blades boss Bryan Robson in 2007."

Perhaps we can put this one to bed now...

ha, how exactly? Our admitted approach will only make speculation more intense.

That’s a bizarre turn of events all round if you ask me.
From Wilson’s point of view, if he’s genuinely interested in signing him wouldn’t he invite him to see our medical team, train with us, at least find out what sort of wage he’ll be looking for and if a deal would be feasible?
Wouldn’t Beattie welcome as much help as possible to get fit, to acquire a contract and keep earning while he’s working on his fitness?
I can’t believe they would have a “very brief” chat and not discuss money or a possible contract at all. “Get yourself fit and then ring us back” just doesn’t ring true.

Completely pointless thread. This a job for the scouts. Wilson will have set up his scouting network and obviously has people looking in Scotland and the lower leagues. I cannot name any reasonable targets, but that is because I earn a living from research not from watching football and spotting talent. I know enough from being a fan though, that I do not want Beattie. I am sure that there are young, athletic, quick strikers with a point to prove who are available. If you give me a month off work and a couple of grand budget then I will easily come up with some names for you.

Why look further than what we have? Cresswell has scored 4 and seems to have his touch back. Porter had a decent goalscoring record at Oldham and Motherwell and (if he can stay fit) will get goals at this level. We have 'development player', Welsh international and once highly related Evans to coem back. Then we have Tonne (2 goals from 2 sub appearances) and Philskirk (2 for the reserves during the week) who are you and hungry and looking for some first team action.

I would much sooner we concentrate on getting centre half cover than worrying about strikers. 13 goals scored so far (with 4 in the last match and plenty from midfield) might suggest we don't need a nother striker at all (never mind an overweight, lazy, slefish neverbeen).

Completely pointless response more like!

Yes, you're right this is a job for Wilson and his scouts - and yet, despite the obvious contradiction to everything you have just said (you being obviously more knowledgeable than 99% of the rest of our fanbase eh!?), they seemingly ARE interested in signing BT and you can therefore assume, judge him as one of the better candidates available. They do spend their time, and indeed their careers spotting talent and deem him worth enquiring about.

On the argument of why bothering, i find it ammusing when fans who are often on the clubs back for not being pro-active or showing ambition, are the same one's to knock it when it does decide to make a move. Why bother? Well imho a club should always "bother" to look at bettering its playing squad whenever it can, and if Danny and his staff believe BT will do this, then i applaude them for pursuing it. Just because things are looking good at the minute, does not mean we stop here, and overlook a chance to improve even further - you don't see other clubs doing so (not any of success anyway) so why should we just because a few fans of obvious more managerial talent than anyone at the club feel otherwise (despite the fact that in reality we know precisely sod all about being a manager).

The fact is we have 2 proven strikers art present - (excluding Ched for obvious reasons) - both of whom have had injury worries in the past, and as such we would benefit from another striker on the books. BT (despite your apparent refusual to appreciate it) remains one of the most (if not the most) prolific goalscorers we have had at BDTBL since Deano, and has not played outside the top flight of English football apart from the time spent with us and his brief stay at Rangers last season). He is a proven goalscorer (i apologise if this contradicts your "neverbeen" label but you give me a "neverbeen" who has scored as many in topflight as him and i will be more willing to digest that load of bull you try to pass off as fact) and forgive me for my ignorance but in the position we are in (league 1 remember!) you give me the name of someone with the same pedigree and guarantee of goals as him?

There is no doubt if he does arrive, it will because Danny and SUFC think (despite his weight and laziness - FFS are you for real!?) he is capable of benefiting and scoring goals for this club, and to be fair, it would mean that BT himself wants to be here (as imo he would never consider any other L1 club nor dropping to the wages he would be on at SUFC), and if you offered any other club in this league a player of his ilk in this league you'd struggle to keep your eye on your arm as its ripped from your shoulder.

I honestly can not see why anyone with such a desire to see Sheffield United succeed would not want a James Beattie in their team? Yes he's a few years older (as is Kevin Phillips), and isn't fit (yet - and rumour is this is one reason why he will not sign until a few weeks time, as neither SUFC or he himself wants his wages being paid out while he has no chance of playing), but lazy (middlesbrough game among many where he has defended as well as anyone on the field) and selfish (possibly but with good reason as most proven strikers are!) and a neverbeen (you ever scored around 100 goals in the PL or played for your country? neah i didn't think so!) he is not!

James Beattie - best goalscorer we've had at BDTBL in 15 years and yet still some moan FFS!

UTB!

.....try to cover the outgoing of Bogdanovic.

That's easy. Trot off to the Peace Gardens around 8.00 a.m. and accost one of the scruffy cider connoisseurs. Bingo bango, one scruffy lightweight bench-dweller replaced with another one.

He's been a good striker - no doubt. I suspect many, like me, are questioning if he's what we need right now, not then. I believe we need pace. I've always been concerned about signing players at the arse end of their career, and also on high wages. None of these concerns are linked to Beatties previous record with us.

And McGrath! Even if he did have his "worst ever game" for us.

Possibly the most talented player I've seen turn out for the Blades.

No McGrath adds weight to my point. He was good on loan, given a huge contract and his dodgy knees immediately kicked in, costing us a fortune. He had our pants down, but as is the problem with football, most fans don't care enough about value for money they just want star signings. It's OK until you're stuck with the after effects for years later.

So when you were sat debating what does/ doesn't go on behind the scenes for the last couple of years, reading between the lines here, assuming things there, you couldve saved yourself the hassle as that's unanswerable as well.

I actually like this thread, think it's interesting to see what others think. It hasn't sunk to the depths of the Quinn interview about Wilson thread, just normal, constructive posts instead of becoming a pissing contest :)

It was no contest.
