I have a dream that one day on the red and white stands of Bramall Lane, former managers and current managers will be able to be appreciated together at the temple of Bladeyhood. I have a dream that one day even the forum of S24SU, a forum sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom to appreciate all Blades.
I have a dream that our former managers and current managers will one day encounter a fan base where they will not be judged by the fact that they're not perfect, but by their contribution to the club. I have a dream . . . I have a dream that one day on S24SU, with its vicious posters, with its cliques having their lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, one day right there on S24SU, all the pro-Wilderites and pro-Sellesites will be able to join hands with all the anti-Wilderites and anti-Sellesites as fellow Blades.
I have a dream today . . .
This will be the day when all Blades will be able to sing with new meaning: "You fill up my senses, like a gallon of Magnet, like a packet of Woodbine, like a good pinch of snuff. Like a night out in Sheffield, like a greasy chip butty, like Sheffield United, come fill me again. Na, na, na, na, na, na. Ooh, ooh, ooh." And if United is to be a great club, this must become true.
So let the GCB ring from the prodigious boxes of John Street. Let the GCB ring from the mighty safe standing of the Kop. Let the GCB ring from the heightening Upper Tier of the BLUT. Let the GCB ring from the restricted view seats of the Kop corner. Let the GCB ring from the curvaceous slope of the Westfield (or whatever it's called these days).
But not only that. Let the GCB ring from the Family Enclosure of John Street. Let the GCB ring from the Tony Currie Stand of Cherry Street. Let the GCB ring from every hill and stand of Bramall Lane, from every side of the ground. Let the GCB ring . . .
When we allow the GCB to ring—when we let it ring from every seat and every box, from every rail seat and every supporter, we will be able to speed up that day when all Blades, pro-Wilderites and anti-Wilderites, pro-Sellesites and anti-Sellesites, pro-"entertain at all costs, even if we lose every match"ites and pro-"gritty wins are fine, I'd rather be a bit bored than end up in League One"ites, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the original United, before Newton Heath and half the country copied our name: “United at last, United at last, Great God a-mighty, We are United at last!”
Addendum: I might have borrowed, just a teensy weensy little bit, from another famous 'I have a dream' speech. But I'm sure if the Reverend Martin Luther King knew how divided our fan base is at the moment, he'd understand.
