Anyway, 5 years ago today we beat Bristol City 1-3.

The finest result of our entire stay in League One.

They were top and ended up winning the league with about 140 points.

And we were losing 1-0 at HT.

The conclusion of the court case seems to have revealed so much about the way this club was run. This isn't an anti McCabe rant, rather an insight into where we were and where, under new and apparently more ambitious ownership, we seem headed. Time will be the great leveller, but this season will go down as one of this club's most adventurous and galvanising episodes in United's history. Suddenly we appear to have grasped the opportunity to step forward, with a manager who is arguably the finest this club has had, and a board who, from all accounts, are reading from the same page and showing the same level of ambition, something I once resigned myself to believing would never happen. Not now it seems, and the fact that the team are performing so well in their return to the Premier Division is all any of us could have wished for.

There's part of me that wants to wait for three or four seasons before commenting on the turnaround in our fortunes, but this season has been spectacularly good, so much so that it feels like the re-birth of a club that had lost it's mojo and were prepared to be part of that group that were happy to be no more than one of football's also-rans.

I know, I know, we've not achieved anything yet, that is unless you consider the rise under our exceptional management, culminating in such a fantastic season, one that has delivered such amazing rewards, with the promise that under Chris Wilder we'll show far more of what most of us imagined was never going to be rightfully ours.....how wrong was I. No assumptions or presumptions, no doubt Wilder is reminding the squad of exactly this point, but I prefer to trust my own eyes and the way we're adapting to the toughest of standards in what is clearly one of the toughest divisions in Europe if not the world. My one wish is that what we've seen this season will become the norm of this great club, and that we, the supporters, are party to the evolution of this wonderful football club as it makes the type of strides no one once felt possible. UTMB!!!

Without being accused of being a party pooper, it seems a proportion of us are being carried along and sucked in by the strategic media ‘love in’.

We are, in typical British media terms, being built up beyond what we’re used to. Why? So the story of our fall from grace is all the more poignant or in the unlikely event, we don’t, the media can claim ‘they prophesied the second coming’.

Also, with the league over early, it makes for a different story.

Realistically, the big guns, with the bigger squads, experience, etc. will end the season stronger than us and we’ll finish maybe 8th, 9th, or lower. Still, what an achievement. Think about it.

My biggest concern is that if this does happen, there could be a sense of regret and disappointment, given the European talk and that’s a shame. True, we may become victims of our own success but we need to be objective.

We’d all be delighted if it does happen, and yes I accept with some, the European talk is ironic and traditionally self-depreciating but for others, it reminds me of the pigs under Francis in the early 90’s. We’re beginning to take ourselves too seriously and that’s not like us.

Look, this season has been the best, let’s all make sure we remember it that way.

Agree with much of that. I think the point is that we are having the times of our lives and love talking about the possibility. I haven’t seen anyone say it’s nailed on that we will qualify.

It doesn't contradict, but there is a bit of educated supposition in there. They have made the appeal to CAS, who generally take their time about these things, which probably means City will be in next seasons competition appeal pending. They will still be found guilty as CAS rarely overturn anything by UEFA, but it will be a reduced punishment of a 1 year ban for 2021-22.

As a Leicester fan, who went to Uni up in Sheffield, it's fair to say i'm pretty pleased that my adopted second club/home is now joining us on this great expedition of disassembling the so called 'Big six'.

The moment for me, when I realized that you are likely to be more than just a flash in the pan? Your January signings.
The Model that a non-established 'Big/Top 6' club has to follow in order to get success, is that of Borussia Dortmund.
Buying players with huge potential, at the very beginning of their career - Berge and Retsos are two players, in my mind which fit that perfectly.

An extended appeal means they can compete in the CL next season, another years worth of that income isn't to be sniffed at even for City. Also gives them more time to sort finances, player contracts and the like.
