I went to a seminar in Leeds on a Monday a few years ago
Sunderland had knocked Wendy out if the FA Cup the day before

A few of us from Sheffield went on the train and a few from the North East went on the train to Leeds from up there

A couple of Sunderland fans and a couple of Wendies were talking about the match

These were the only words that could be heard

The pathetic thing is that each of them thought they were talking about the other and offering compliments

My favorite home game against Sunderland was October 1978, we won 3:2 and it was also on MoTd as the division 2 game. It was an excellent game, with one of our goals finishing second in the MoTd goal of the season, Steve Finnieston?. I also remember the scrapping around BDTBL before and after the game, they brought a good few that season, I remember one of the Sunderland fans was saying Newcastle was one of their next games and they expected a beating off the pitch.

One of those games I can remember vividly, for some time, with Sunderland bringing thousands and singing 'We're going to win the league' non stop for about 20 minutes up to half time.

I believe Newcastle followed soon afterwards and we also beat them.

Think we had a post a while back about "noisy" supporters at BDTBL.

I'd put Sunderland and Man City as the most loud and vociferous I have heard in the away end.

LIke us, they travel well.

Our support primarily in the 2nd half of last season was absolutely magnificent with probably P'boro away being the best for the sheer drama of the winning goal and where our fans went bonkers. I remember from roys post match summary - one P'boro fan suggested "It was like they had scored the winning goal in a cup final"..........well yes, Peterborough fan..........it's called PASSION, and we have it in spades.

Dare I ask for a bit more this season? Lets hope so

Always think it must be a good day out for away fans coming to the Lane. Walking distance from the station, loads of pubs in the city centre to go at, if you're sensible you can get away with supping around the ground/London Road. Don't think there's many grounds in the country, in a really big city, that have a ground that that's close to the centre - Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, no. Smaller cities like Newcastle, Sunderland, Bradford, Derby all in walking distance, Nottingham just about walking distance. Perhaps Brum from a really big city. That's one of the reasons why I think the powers that be in Sheffield should be pushing the Lane over Hillsborough for the big events, much better and easier for visitors into the city, thought that with the boxing in Sheffield, city centre was buzzing with fight fans from all over the country.

As for Sunderland, it'll never be a love 'um with 'um, but probably more a grudging respect due to the similarities of the clubs/cities. Went to Uni up there and in a lot of ways thought Sunderland was very similar to Sheffield, more down to earth than their cocky Geordie neighbours up the road (a bit like Sheffield/Leeds) and has already been said all the publicity and fanfares goes to Newcastle (a bit like Sheffield/Leeds or United/pigs lol). Oh and it was always easy to pull in Mackem land, in fact if you hadn't sh***ed um on the first date, or within a couple of hours of getting off with 'um, they thought you were a poof! That has to be a ringing endorsement for any city.

Was at Sunderland Uni at the same time as a Darnall Blade who told me about when they went up to the Fort boozer near Roker Park one year and ended up getting battered. Did the same the following season and the Mackems got battered. Both times getting applauded out of the city by their lads ... grudging respect.

Went to the old roker years ago, in a boozer close to the ground, it was brilliant but the head on the pints was about 4" above the rim, I cut mine off with a beer mat cue tumbleweed blowing through the pub, funny things you remember from different grounds over the yearsmind you it did go a bit quite when one of us ordered 6 pints and, er a 1/2 of cider

The only time I went to Roker Park was March 9th, 1991. That was the season when - freshly promoted from Division 2 to the top flight - we didn't win until our 17th game (home to Forest, Dec. 22). After that, we only lost 6 more games and were beating teams like Man. Utd., Chelsea, Everton (away) for fun. That team had character in spades - similar to the present one - and Bassetts Blades finally made survival safe on April 13th at a sun-drenched Loftus Road in front of thousands of fluorescent-clad Blades. This was the game when the legend of 'Sir Bob Booker' was made.
Anyway, back to Sunderland and maybe a timely warning to our younger fans. We won the game 1-0 (Jock Bryson) and a lot of our younger fans - heady with running riot at a lower level - were wearing shirts, scarves hats etc. Inconspicuous they weren't. We fell in with a bunch of them as we got near the ground, then BOSH! About 30 Mackems, fresh from the boozer, came round the corner and were about to annihilate us. Suddenly from nowhere, a meat wagon appeared with a weird, continuous siren blaring. The cops jumped out, opened the back doors and threw us in the back! No worries, they'd rescued us and drove us right to the away turnstiles. Inside the ground, there was a hostile atmosphere. As ever, it was freezing (it's always fucking freezing in Sun'lan) and their 'mob' were sat in the upper tier of a large (Archibald Reith?) stand, in tee-shirts and making an almighty racket by stamping their feet on the wooden floor .

So you young 'uns, have your fun this season but don't think you can go to the likes of Leeds, Forest, Middlesbrough etc. and take the piss.

I was in the home end for that match in 91. A good mate from Uni is a Sunderland fan so we always went with his dad. I was doing really well to we scored and I jumped up in celebration.
Had some good times watching them at both Roker and SoL.

When Sunderland are on television it's always amusing to see the Dronfield flag behind the goal.
