Good/ entertaining report of away grounds that.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Sunderland too for 2 reasons.

1: The 1st cup final I ever remember watching was the 1973 Leeds v Sunderland final.
I was 7 at the time but was a bit confused as to why Sunderland were wearing the SU kit.
Also all the media made it seem like Leeds only has to turn up to win with Sunderland having no chance.

2: In the 90's I worked with an old bloke who was a Sunderland exile and big Sunderland fan
He was really opinionated and used to go on about the unfair positive media bias in support of Newcastle and how Sunderland don't get much national publicity. He challenged me to check all the stats regards honours, home support, away support etc and said that Newcastle only just edge it.

It reminded me a bit of the SW media bias, people think SW are a bigger club than what they really are.
Newcastle take 5K to an away match and it makes the headlines, Sunderland do the same and there's nothing. Everyone thinks Newcastle are this massive club much much bigger thanSunderland
but the reality is that Sunderland are only slightly behind smaller than Newcastle and are one of the bigger clubs in the UK.

I'd "Makem" my favourite rival supporters - from many, many years ago when I first visited the North East I felt very welcome there. I'm looking forward to sharing some beers and banter with 'em this season.

Like that - although aren't Fulham in there twice?

I have so much time for both Newcaatle and Sunderland as clubs and fans, even though the two of them hate each other! I've never been to Sunderland but I went with United when we lost 2 - 1 at st James. I was very impressed with Newcastle as a city but I've always preferred Sunderland out of the two football clubs because I relate to them more. In the sense that Newcastle is more like Leeds and Sheffield is probably more like Sunderland, although that's more guess work, going on the history of the two cities. Football wise, Sunderland are the more humble of the two, but that said, unlike Wednesday, Newcastle have genuine foundation for saying they are a massive club.

My favorite home game against Sunderland was October 1978, we won 3:2 and it was also on MoTd as the division 2 game. It was an excellent game, with one of our goals finishing second in the MoTd goal of the season, Steve Finnieston?. I also remember the scrapping around BDTBL before and after the game, they brought a good few that season, I remember one of the Sunderland fans was saying Newcastle was one of their next games and they expected a beating off the pitch.

Peter Anderson's 2nd goal finished 2nd in MOTD goal of the season. Debutant Richard Harwood won the ball inside our half, passed it to Sabella in the centre circle. Sabella made two or three touches to the ball, looked up and coolly chipped the ball to Anderson who headed it down between two defenders and slotted it past Barry Siddall

I still remember the pass and the run through the two defenders, I just couldn't remember who scored. Another promising season that ended in despair.

And before I watch that clip, it was the Bramall Lane end.

I have a mate / acquaintance who is a Sunderland fan and he talks utter bollocks most the time so I have no time for Sunderland.

I don't actively "like" Sunderland (my best mate is a 'Boro fan and his intense loathing of them has rubbed off on me a little - to be fair though, he's become a dedicated pig hater through association with me), but I do love their ground. It was one of the ones I was most looking forward to but alas I'm already committed to a beer festival on that saturday.

Good writeup of away grounds though. I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Fulham in the cup a few years back, and generally agree with everything written (apart from saying anything vaguely nice about the south barnsley shitheap).

One thing them piggies are going to have to get used to is that they're second fiddle to us now that we are back. Like it or not, away fans prefer to visit us rather than them due to our location, prefer the ground atmosphere and prefer us as a club, even if it's on a "love to hate" basis.

Understandably, they got a bit giddy over the past five years due to being "above us". I hope they enjoyed it because it's fucking well over now.

That's a rather good write up, a few years out of date on the beer served though.

I still don't like Sunderland, but I don't like most people, so that's alright.

But surely it should be sheffield weds as they are everyone's fweinds and they are massive and all that....
