For me hes not commanding enough and dosent hold the ball up well enough. For his size he gets knocked off the ball to easy and some of his jumps are poor.

Not as bad as akinbiyi, he jumped and got smaller :D

Only one man did that better and that was Jostein Flo, though to be fair he was playing out of position.

I actually think this is good business by United, especially as his wages may also have been a factor in selling him, as well as what everyone else has put.

Who can hold the ball up front and lead the line then?

stead

You have just answered your own question.

Also who is to say we "need" to hold the ball up front? Whatever happened to flowing attacking?

Stead is a quality player, his game isn't primarily about scoring (even though he is a striker) as he has a lot more to him.

Flowing attacking? You mean that what we played under robson?

Stead is a good player, but you have just said his game isn't primarily about scoring. Goals win games. BT did alot for us last season, now put stead in his shoes. Would he have got that many goals?

Not too worried about Hulse leaving, he was out of form since his injury and to get a good fee for him I'm happy.

With Stead, I bet his goal to appearance ratio for us is pretty good. He isn't prolific, but he will get other players so many goals and that's what he brings to us. His link up play is second to none and I'd have him over most strikers in this league.

Irrelevant what we did under Robson, new era, new ways to play.

But we're comparing him to Hulse and not Beattie. My opinion is that Stead is a better overall player than Hulse, he is a better goalscorer too.

Stead played 7 more games than Hulse (and I would bet Hulse started more games) and scored 6 goals to Hulse's 0.

Your arguement holds no water RE stead, because if you're refering to goalscoring attributes, Hulse is way behind in the sense he doesn't look like scoring.

It is relevant what we did under robson. That was the flowing attacking football what you want to see.

Dont get me wrong, hulse time is to go, but everyone is praising stead to no end but hes come on in games and done nothing several times. He gets knocked off the ball too easy. so he is no cover for BT.

Stead hadn't just come back from a broken leg and still looked poor at times.

And hulse dosent look like scoring? apart from the sitters he's missed he dosent.

He didn't look like scoring no, the sitters are proof of this, well in a roundabout way.

As for the Robson era, the talk was of flowing and attacking football but this was never actually achieved.

I don't think everyone is also praising Stead no end, they just believe him to be a better striker the Hulse, on which I would have to agree. Stead comes on in games and sometimes doesn't impress yes, but when he starts games he looks a much better player. I think we should have the confidence to start him from the off and we will see a better player, 10 minutes here and there is not good enough for him, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him move on if we carry on with such dis-respect for him.

But stead and hulse are a different type of striker. That was my original point. United IMO work best with a man like BT/Hulse up front to hold the ball and a sharp/webber working off him.

You said stead was good cover for it and hence the bit about if he was in BT's role, as you suggest he wouldnt have got that many goals.

Read back a few posts... most are praising stead to no end.

If hulse goes we need another striker in and shelton out too. A proper backup for BT who can lead the line and be good in the air and strong on the ball. Stead, for me dosn't fit the bill and would be better in a off role such as webber and sharp.

I don't wanna go on about this topic all day, cause basically I finish work at 1 ;)

BUT.............. How often do we play without a striker like Beattie/Hulse?

In fact in games where Beattie and Hulse have not played say..... Man City game for example, we played better attacking and team football.

was a cup game but yeah we did.

But look at the amount of times we played with a big man and amount of wins we got under blackwell.

I dont care if its the most attractive football in the world, as long as we win.

But how many times have we played with no big man and won? Whats the difference in ratio?

We have played with big men a lot and lost quite a lot too.

I might have a look through at what games were played last season with no big men and look at result.

just look under the robson era. Dont think blackwell played without one.

From another site:

"The whole of last season was an opportunity for him to play alongside Beattie but neither Robbo or Blackwell picked him despite being the only striker available for the entire campaign. He got two bollockings from Blackwell inside a week of him becoming manager due to his performances on the training ground and admitted in an interview that he hadn't been putting in the effort.

Stead is a 50/50 player. You either get the one who's a constant threat on goal, or the one who can't be ****d to get involved and makes no effort to break sweat. He needs to sort his head out or f*ck off in January. If he doesn't sort himself out he'll become another player where people will look back and say "he had the talent but wasted his career."

I only got so far..............

Chesterfield won 3-1
MK Dons won 3-2 aet
Morecambe won 5-0
Arsenal lost 3-0
Bolton won 1-0

80% win ratio, only losing to one of the top 4 ;)

Stats can say so much, but hide lots of other things

You missed out Man City the one you mentioned earlier;)
And Man City didn't field a weakened team when they played us!
I think that it could (and can) work for us.

Stead is a great striker, who just needs an arm round him telling him how good he is, just like Tonge. He works the line well, and is constantly moving off the ball making the defenders work harder just to mark him.

He played upfront with Hulse once last season, i think anyway, and the pair of them missed about 5 sitters. But at that time if we got more than 2 chances in a game we played well!

noticed there all in cup?

The cup is totally different than the league.

how many in the league then we didnt play with big man little man and won? And how many did we loose?

And same with big man little man up front win/ loose ratio?

Stead worked best with Shelton because Shelton played off Stead, the rest (Hulse in particular) of the strikers figured it was Stead's role to come to them. In other words Shelton was the only one who treated Stead as a partner, he does challenge the defence but he is not just a supplier.

RE the rumours of BT going to be out for 8 weeks, its disappointing in the club to get rid of hulse.

Henderson is a thug at times and id rather have hulse who knows the team than to get another player coming in to know them all and starting again.

Oh well. The pessimist blade strikes again!

has hulse played yet? be hard for him to score from the bench.

I could have like :D

Also, we have just had a £10million injection from McCabe. Why do we need to sell hulse to a rival team?

Makes no sense with BT out injured.

Except the club know more about the current state of Mr Beattie.

They clearly keep saying we don't need to sell him, but have chosen to as it suits the club and the player.

Ey? They keep saying we dont need to then we do?

Why did they say we dont need to sell him in the first place?

Blackwell has been saying all pre-season the we don't need to sell anyone, as has Kevin McCabe.

Then, when saying we'd accepted an offer, he said again we didn't need to sell Rob and he's sorry to see him go.
He said that its a good deal for all involved and he couldn't guarentee Hulse what he wanted and needs and thats a first team place every week.

I dont need to play and watch football, but i still do it.

Something seems odd about it all.

If he wants first team football, he would be getting it with BT injured.

Exactly, you do it out of choice, we've sold Hulse out of choice, not because we need to.

How do you know he'd be getting first team football? For all we know Blackie could be planning on sticking Chris Morgan up front all season :p

He clearly wasn't likely to be getting first team football all season, or we wouldn't be selling him! :)

:| Really???

I just dont see what good its doing selling hulse if BT is injured without cover at least.

Henderson has been mention, but IMO i dont think hes better than hulse. With the £10million McCabe has supposedly invested we should be able to get someone better.

I agree we should sell him but bring in someone better other wise whats the point.

And no me and BB haven't got accounts mixed up before you ask :p

Keenzy

Have faith in Blackie and McCabe i'm tellin yer the Blades will spend big this time.
