Just received a straight red, think that means three game ban and subsequently misses the blades putting three past him on 13th

Sent off for a professional foul, apparently. Is that an automatic three match ban? Or is it assessed by discretion, depending on how bad it was?

Doesn't the length of the ban depend on the offence? Sure some reds are only 2 games

My understanding is a straight red = 3 match, 2 yellow = red and 1 match. But just found this on Wiki:
Red card (dismissal)
A red card is shown by a referee to signify that a player has been sent off.[3] A player who has been sent off is required to leave the field of play immediately and must take no further part in the game. Only players, substitutes and substituted players may receive a red card. If a team's goalkeeper receives a red card another player will be allowed to assume goalkeeping duties (teams will usually substitute an outfield player for another goalkeeper if this option is available).

Law 12 of the Laws of the Game lists the categories of misconduct for which a player may be sent off. These are:

  1. Serious foul play (a violent foul)
  2. Violent conduct (any other act of violence) e.g. assaulting the referee.
  3. Spitting at anyone or another player
  4. A deliberate handling offense to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by any player other than a goalkeeper in his own penalty area
  5. Committing an offence that denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (informally known as a professional foul)
  6. Using offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures
  7. Receiving a second caution (yellow card) in the same game
In most tournaments, a single direct red card (i.e. not one received as a result of two successive yellow ones) results in disqualification of the offending player for one or more of subsequent matches, the exact number of matches varying by the offence committed and by jurisdiction. Should a team's on-field players receive a total of five red cards, they will be unable to field the required minimum of seven players and the match will be abandoned.

2nd red of season apparently so 4 match ban possible?

Always thought 2 yellows was a one match ban and a straight red was a 2 match ban? If it's his second straight red of the season then it's 3 games?

I think he will miss two games only.

Unless tonight's red was for violent conduct.

professional foul red one match ban ,if hes had another 2

He might be injured as well so the length of the ban may be a moot point. Still Steve Harper is no mug so it's not so much of an advantage. Now if Huddlestone or Davies gets injured or banned then that will be an advantage

Agreed. Huddlestone is a quality player.

I always thought a straight red was a 2 match ban & 2 yellows a 3.

But surely 2 red cards = longer then 2 games?

Straight reds hardly ever get 2 match bans. Denying a goalscoring opportunity or deliberate handball tends to be a one match ban. Violent conduct or dangerous tackles get a 3 match ban. Sent off for 2 yellows is a one match ban

Second red card of the season gets an extra match added to whatever length ban you get

Saw the pen incident on SSN, I couldnt understand why West Ham got the penalty never mind the red card. He should appeal

Automatic 3 match ban if its a staight red.I have not seen the incident,so i cant comment on whether they should appeal, but a definate 3 game ban otherwise

They are unlikely to appeal bruce said and ive just seen it myself so im like you i dont know why they are not appealing but having said all that it looks like he has a serious kidney injury anyway so it might not matter

It does says quite clearly in the article

But with McGregor now suspended for three matches, Jakupovic may seize his chance to force his way into Bruce's reckoning in the matches against Tottenham, Sunderland and Southampton within the next fortnight.

Tom Huddlestone is on 4 yellows, does this mean a 5th would result in a 1 game ban?
Or is 10 they now have to reach before suspension?

What the red card or the serious kidney injury?

Anyhoo according to screen dump by HeCanDoMagic the ban ends on 5th April.

Screen dump, that sounds bad and produces terrible images in my head

Hull aren't appealing because the red card was given in a game against West Ham and we all know what the FA's decision would be.

In terms of bans, the following is the starting point:

1 game:
2 yellow cards
Professional foul (ie denying a goalscoring opportunity)
Deliberate handball to prevent a goalscoring opportunity

3 games:
Violent conduct
Spitting at an opponent
Foul & abusive language
Serious foul play

For every additional red card in a season the minimum ban is increased by a game, meaning that when Brandy got his second red card this season (for violent conduct) he got the minimum 3 match ban increased by a game.

The FA can also review and increase bans where it's deemed appropriate.

It's a shame for the Hull keeper but a kidney injury makes his suspension irrelevant and 39 year old Stevie Harper is almost certain to be in goal in the semi-final, although given the bad luck he has tended to have throughout his career he might get sent off himself or break a leg yet. In 20 years of loyal service with the Toon he played a mere 157 times.

Doubt he's been match fit - ever
