Another game, another mistake. It didn't cost us today but he's not good enough and going to cost us points again this season. He's ok as cover but we need a better keeper.His lack of communication and command cannot be helping with the frailties of our defenders either. And his kicking is dire.
 



Without making it seem like he has no qualities as a 'Keeper, I think his particular weakness is with shots from distance. There were at least four direct free kicks scored against us last season (Eriksson and Paul Gallagher x 3) plus Crewe's winner at the Lane and a host of others. Again yesterday he should have done better with the free kick.
 
Very Strongly Disagree.

He's played well so far this season. Made some decent saves from free kicks and also managed to scramble clear several dangerous dead balls into the box.

I don't know enough about the technical side of their goal yesterday but I think it's simplistic to blame the keeper.

Communication needs to be worked on,.but that's a coaching and management issue as well which should be sorted.before.the players.get on the pitch.

And yet another demand for the club to spend yet more money.

CM, CH, (maybe 2), GK.

What quality will we get if we spread the Murphy money that thin?

Keep him and support him. He's fine.

They had 2 shots on target today. One he messed up and the other he saved well. Not a great ratio. It's hard to know what the problem is. He doesn't often have a lot to do in games, so could be concentration, but he seems to misjudge his positioning and the flight/bounce of balls a lot.

Having a good commanding goalkeeper is on par with having a 20/25 goal striker. He can save you at least 12 points a season . To me Howard may well be still struggling with his back injury , as he always appears to be in discomfort , and his overall mobility does not seem to be there.

We do need to strenghen the competition, for the no1 spot , and no doubt Adkins will realise this . I wonder if he suffers with his eyesight , as he does tend to misjudge a number of situations thses days . Our defending in recent times has not helped him , but again is he a promotion chasing side goalkeeper .

This scouting trip abroad , may well have been for a goalkeeper , not a forward . Also what is the goalkeeping coach doing. Consistency is the key , and that includes the goalkeeper.

It's a catch 22 with the defence. It can't help the defenders, especially from corners, not knowing if the keeper is going to come, stay, or do both. Equally, their jitteryness can'y help him.

If he's struggling with his mobility still, he shouldn't be in goal. It has been a long time now and he's either never going to fully recover or needs a long rest to sort it out.

Your keeper is the most important position on the pitch for me. Have a strong, commanding and reliable man between the posts and it breads confidence throughout the defence and midfield. Communication is key as well. A keeper needs to dominate their own area and organise their defence.
 
Watching the highlights again I feel he could have done better with their free kick.

He doesn't fill the defence with confidence.

Long term I'd be looking to replace but probably wouldn't be spending all out budget on it as we have more pressing priorities elsewhere.

Disagree completely about his communication ,you can hear him from the JSS and the goal conceded yesterday had nothing to do with that. The goals at Bradford weren't either ,the first one he misjudged the pace of the ball but Basham and Edgar dropped bollocks ,the second one was Edgar having a complete mare from misjudging the ball letting it bounce and then unluckily hitting Coles foot. Communication is the not the problem ,he had a weakness on distance shots last season but that is not the case now. The biggest problem is the amount of freekicks we give away around our penalty area ,eventually we are bound to concede because there are so many rash challenges. We have far more pressing problems than a new keeper ,centre half and centre midfield mainly.
 
He's an absolute 'bare minimum' goalkeeper. He'll never win you points, only lose them.

That weak effort to save the free kick was nothing compared to the cowardly 'effort' to stop Meredith scoring last week.

Needed releasing and replacing in pre season and still needs replacing now. But I suspect we have too many other areas to strengthen first and are hamstrung by the size of the wage bill.

Think its easy to point him out because he should have done better with the free kick but I'm sorry the bloke is the last line of defence and those in front leave him exposed more than he should be. I'm not yet convinced by Long and think GK while not the most urgent matter is somewhere we could conceivably look to strengthen. For me Brayford coming back plus a centre half would be a big help.

Look at how many opportunities we are giving the opposition to have shots on goal and I think therein lies the problem.

Oh and we are in the third division so getting top keepers is a bit tougher than if we were higher up the leagues. Same with the other 10 positions on the pitch.

Yes the point blank save against Bradford won us fuck all did it ? To call him cowardly is ridiculous ,you need to look at some other keepers first.

I dont think it is too symplistic. His positioning for free kicks seems particularly bad. A few and me said so before it was even taken yesterday.
Give the shooter as little chance as possible. He positioned nearer the furthest point from the ball. Those of us who fancy ourselves to deliver that type of shot would have been rubbing our hands with glee at where he put himself.

In the last 3 games we have given about a dozen free kicks on the edge of the box ,at least 4 yesterday ,noticeable because of this idea of Flynn or JCR lining up the wall to stop them taking a quick one ,we have only conceded one whereas I would expect us to score more than one at the opposite end.
 
Somewhat harsh to use the Eriksson wonder goal as an example that he can't manage long range shots.

He's a decent keeper, made some good saves, let some in he probably could have done better with last season. I think he looked hampered by his back during that spell but there was no faith from the management in Long. Longer term I think we could improve that position. A very good keeper makes the difference between being a good team and a really good team.

I think there are various times in the past couple of seasons where this comment has been proved to be an utter air biscuit.

We do give away too many free kicks around the edge of the box. They tend to be from defenders trying to unnecessarily win an unwinnable ball. Which is not good enough.

However, how many of those free kicks have been on target for Howard to save?

I agree for a different reason. The number we give away we're bound to concede every once in a while because unfortunately Howard every once in a while, like yesterday, lets a shot like that from distance in when most of the other times he'd comfortably save it. We can probably make do with him for the rest of the season, but this is an area we should be looking to improve on in the summer, as neither he nor Long are good enough long-term.
 
Long is the better shot stopper but Howard is better in every other respect. If we could merge the two we'd have a serious keeper...

How many of those did Howard pull off a quality save to. How many went straight to him and how many wide?
 
Regards Donny's goal yesterday, it was a poor goal to gift the opposition

Whether it was the positioning of the wall, the positioning of the GK, or the GK's far from safe pair of hands, or perhaps a combination of all three, but whatever it was, it always seems that come just about every game, Howard has a mistake of some sort in him

Now, we all know that ALL players make mistakes, but Howard seems to be held accountable all too often these days and whilst in the short term, we may get away with it, the long term suggests to me, we need to look at bringing in a better keeper
 
For me he needs replacing just as much as Collins, McEverley etc..

I panic when he comes for a cross, I have no confidence when a player goes through 1v1 with him, his ability to shop long shots is laughable.

He has completely the wrong mentality for a number 1 goalie, one bad kick and his head drops for the next 30 minutes.

A save is a save and arranging a decent wall is vital too. Hes not one of those keepers who throws himself about for the cameras and wants the glory when he makes a save ,I think a bit of perspective is needed and a look at other keepers both in our league and higher up, you would be surprised.

Was just going to make a similar point; he's a L1 keeper.

I get that he makes people nervous, he makes me nervous. In the long term, hopefully next season, I'd look to replace him but he's not the first priority. That said, if a good one became available I wouldn't complain if we went for him.

There's a sense of déjà vu with this thread. Last week it was McEveley (not without justification imo), this week it's Howard.
 
I think we've got more pressing matters than replacing our keeper, Howard has pulled off some cracking saves this season yet some pull him up for a well taken free kick today (which the wall didn't attempt to jump and block). If an opposition player has the ability to get a free kick up and over the wall and the wall aren't going to attempt to block it how's that Howard's fault? It was a bloody good free kick needlessly given away.
