Howard to Bolton

Other than the chance of improvement, there's nothing between Long and Howard right now.

I wouldn't be getting smug about this one.

Not convinced by Long but even less convinced by Howard who did seem to have either eye sight or back trouble .

Hope Long is not the weak link , but to be fair to the fella , having a settled proper back 4 will help .

Rather see Howard out of the door than Long , but rather see a more vocal , experienced goalkeeper between the posts .

Don't think anybody's smug , more concerned IMO.

The references to "shoot in sight" above are as likely to haunt us as Bolton though.

Surely they haven't signed Mark as their number one. Both them and us need better keepers if we are going to be up there come seasons end, though I'm hoping young George will have ironed out one or two of his weaknesses, come August.

Have we saved a wage with this.
I wouldn't say we've necessarily saved a wage but we won't be paying him next season so I can see why people might think that. Also, that money will hopefully be used to help us get promotion what we would've been paying him had we kept him a year longer.

If only we had some free kick takers for that first game.

Don't agree with that at all. Howard was a deceptive player, he looked alright at times. The fundamentals were there, but his consistency was awful! The problem with Howard was that the longer he went without a howler, the more likely it felt he'd let one in at some point in the very near future. And when (yet) another savable shot flew past him, it just felt inevitable.

I think Long looks a little more unconventional at times, but for me he's more consistent and the better shot stopper. I'd take Long over Howard any day.

If he's been signed as a back up, they could do worse. But he's not good enough to be regularly relied on as first choice in a season where automatic promotion is the target.

Long shots are his Achilles heel which we should know about if he plays against us so hope to see the little Flecker trying his luck from all angles

Isn't Amos their keeper ATM? Although I read he's on daft money so they're probably trying to get rid.

Had this argument many times, but I don't believe Howard was the disaster that some make out. He was just an average League One 'keeper, who didn't control his area well, although I he used to come off his line well for free kicks, and he was a keen student of the Joe Hart Euro 2016 academy when it came to shots from outside the area. Yes he should of been released. Yes Long is a far bette 'keeper but Bolton could do worse.

As the old Chinese saying goes "It could be worse, it could be Simonsen"

He was a fkin awful keeper. The fact he played so many games for us tells you just how bad it had become at the Lane before Sir Christopher of Bramall took over.

Can't remember the game (might have been Bradford away season before CW took over) where he set new levels of incompetence and literally dived out of the way of incoming shots before he then neshed a challenge with their centre forward which should have resulted in their winner. A brave lad he certainly wasn't. Thank fuk he's history.
