Might surprise a few of the doom and gloom merchants on here this. I too was surprised to see some of the figures myself.

Looking at this we are on par goalscoring wise with our first two seasons in this league where we flirted with the
play-offs and had that welsh striker. Not bad really considering that we are yet to find our prolific striker this season.

The negative side is that at the back this season we are equally as bad as we was in our shocking start to the season last year.

Anyway have a look at it and would be interested to see what you all think. It appears that without being prolific in front of goal we have done just about enough and have been let down by our poor defensive record so far. We need that prolific goalscorer bringing in to the club or we need one of our existing ones to kick off good and proper and get started on that 20+ goals that we need him to bang in. Equally though we need to get this back four sorted out quickly.

(I know it is pretty much pointing out the obvious by saying score goals and don't concede)

Means nowt. Not being flippant or dismissive to you personally HPB, but it is how we are doing in relation to other teams that matters. Those above are doing better and what concerns me is how far Bristol City are away from us, how much ground we have to recover over a very long time now (because they all won't just lose, as we win) and how much we have to do to open up a lead on our nearest automatic promotion contender for us to be in that 'it aint THAT bad' bracket.

That is like humans landing on Pluto at the moment. Dress up this season as much as you want, this is where I don't expect United to be after ten games in the Third Division.

Board out.

I understand that and agree with you completely Pommpey mate. I know it means very little but looking where we have been pointing the finger and stuff regarding the lack of a quality striker (which still remains the case) but we have still been finding the back of the net. At the back though we have seriously gone to pot again though!

Don't forget that the Welsh striker began that season injured and only started to make his mark around this stage. That suggests to me if we are to have a striker kick on towards 20 goals and beyond we need that soon so he should probably already be at the club. I think if Baxter can stay fit or McNulty can hold down a regular place it could be either of them (or both!). McNulty looks like a proper poacher and I like how he scores while off balance, from tight angles or by finding a way to just get the ball over the line rather than just hitting good shots from 15-20 yards.

Looking at this season's table the difference between home and away records for goals for and against is staggering. We need to start defending away from home (and I will gladly take a string of 0-0s for a while) and we need to start scoring at home. Sometimes teams just struggle on the road, but the lack of goals at home is inexcusable and needs to change pronto. If our home defence and away attack showed up every game we'd be keeping pace with Bristol City, so the potential is in there.

We're close to having Wallace, Baxter, Murphy, Scougall, JCR and Flynn all fit at the same time while Higdon will be missing and forced to wait for his chance again (I hope) so let's see what happens then.

On the McNulty goal against Chezzie Saturday,i don't know if anyone has mentioned it so sorry in advance but again, the way in which he sends the defender for a burton, turns back towards the flapping keeper and cooly slots it past him cleary shows to me that he has to be getting a regular spot, the lads got that knack required as you rightly say.

I know not everythings rosy atm,but come on,i'm the first to criticise the club but if people aren't getting atleast a bit excited at seeing the players Punk Blade refers to when all fit and firing then whats the point,we might aswell all pack in.Admittedly it needs to happen quite sharpish, and Clough has to change his tactics from the start or we could be in for a long hard season.

Agree, quality finish by McNulty. A lot of strikers would just have blasted it at the first chance and been blocked by the defender.

I'm looking forward to seeing players fit and sharp but I am slightly concerned with how Clough feels the need to constantly change things. I would like to see certain players eg McNulty get a good few consecutive games under his belt to get confident and start hitting the back of the net. Players need to build good working relationships on the pitch and the only way to do this for me is to give them some proper pitch time and let them gain and understanding of eachother. I don't know why but I am not worried in the slightest. For me we was always bound to lose a few dodgy ones early on, the consistency needs to be in place for after Christmas but for now we just need to keep picking up points to put us in a comfortable touching distance to push on.

Well observed Wiz, McNulty was alert, turned on a sixpence to leave the defender flapping, and in the blink of an eye made sure the ball was only ever going to end up in the net. Partnerships are key in football, it doesn't matter which part of the team you mention, be it central defence, midfield, the connection between a fullback and winger, or two forwards (assuming that's how a team is set up to play). Whether it's Higdon, Diego, or someone else, McNulty looks like he could be one of the answers to that missing goal threat we keep banging on about.

Totally agree.I know it's hard after a tricky start and Cloughy messing about too much to stay upbeat, but we're not a million miles away from being a decent side with all our players fit.I know our board have a lot to answer for over the years, but lets just try to see how good our side can be when Clough finally gets a settled side together.Again, admittedly,it has to happen soon because some of our impatient fans will start to question him even more.

played 10 games only 4 at home 6 away and only played colchester out of bottom 11 teams ,
lets judge when weve played 10 in bottom half at home eh

Pommpey - weren't Tranmere runaway leaders a couple of seasons ago and last season it was Leyton Orient who were out in front for so long? Neither of whom got promotion.
From what I recall, only Charlton have led the League from start to finish (in our first season in League One). Although it would be great to get promoted this way, I thought (grudgingly) that the pigs timed it perfectly when they nipped in front of us for the automatic spot in 2012 and likewise Rotherham last season timed it well when they got into the play-offs. All is not lost just yet fella.

As for your comment about "humans landing on Pluto", I think your remark MARS a decent post. I'm SATURN my own at home, listening to the game and when I read your comment, I thought "you can shove that up URANUS".
Listen my old SUN. Some posts on here are really decent and sensible, some unfortunately are piss poor, like a bad comedy show for example starring Russell Howard or that Phil JUPITERs fella.
You've chosen an inNEPTUNE moment to raise matters about the Solar System so just come back down to EARTH eh? Have a good evening mate, i've just turned on Sky Sports 2 to watch Tennis where the Williams sisters, Serena and VENUS are playing.

My last word on the subject? If anyone can do a pun on Mercury, they're a better man than me, Taxi's waiting.

I think even pommpey will like that, class:D

Were going to sign a couple of ringers in January but leave it just a bit too late, then we'll come with a monster charge up the League from February, just in time for next summer when the season tickets go on sale.

Only a 9 out of 10 if you had mentioned the town hall steps you could have slipped a MOON it somewhere BTW would the taxi be a MERCURY Cab

Mcnultys goal was a proper strikers goal ,showing poise ,balance ,improvisation ,quick feet and awareness. He looks a very good player in the box to me and given the right service will become a very good player for us.

And again tonight, the bravery when he nearly had his head took off,and then to have the audacity to lay the ball off perfectly to JCR was brilliant. We could have one here, now Cloughy give the guy a constant run in the team please.
