How much is Billy Sharp worth?

Echo the views here, when he retires (hopefully in a good few years) we'd better hope Smith, Hallam, or Parkhouse have distinguished themselves because there's no way we can afford anywhere near the same quality.

To us, priceless, to someone else you look at the fee Madine commanded and think he must be worth at least double that?

Age is just a number in modern football, I think the fitter players get the more you'll see them bossing it into their mid to late 30s, Glenn Murray at 35 shows that if you look after yourself you can still be dangerous at high levels.

For that reason, £85m haha

I really hope that Billy stays on in a coaching capacity to try and ensure that young lads coming through can benefit from his immense experience. I would also say the same about Duffy, who might also be ready to move into coaching in the next 2-3 seasons. I believe both have expressed an interest in coaching/management to it would be wonderful for them to cut their teeth at this club.
Balls to it, whilst we are at it lets get Jake Wright in on the action as well.

Three youth coaches, Wright, Duffy and Sharp. Can you imagine what our young defenders, midfielders and strikers could learn?

Could see all 3 being quality youth coaches.

Could easily had a hat trick yesterday. Should have scored with the free header but the thing about Bill is he is always in the right place, anticipating where the ball will be coming in. I like how he has a little paddy to himself when he misses a sitter like yesterday's header and then shrugs it off and waits for the next opportunity. Top, top player is our Bill and we are proud to have him.

Stoke will be paying Wolves 9 mill in January for Benik Afobe on loan to buy. He has commanded a transfer history in fees of 36 mill. He has 6 goals this season. A bit of the Jordan Rhodes story regarding Afobe. Billy all day long for me.

Bladey Blades ;-)

He's not worth anything, we'll not sell him, he's too valuable to us!

I think he's playing the best football of his career, he was never quick but hasn't slowed down. The anticipation is excellent and he's also a great crosser of the ball. Despite the fat lad jokes I think he looks trimmer this season, anyone see the pic of him on the boat when the lads went away after promotion, he's ripped!

The word legend is over used in football, not in Billy's case

He's invaluable. He's our consistent threat and will cost a lot to replace eventually .

Thought he played really really well today, his best allround performance for a long time.

The problem is if Sharp is poor in his next 2 or 3 games, then most fans will be saying we should get rid because he’s crap and past it.

If anyone deserves "He's one of our own", after scoring, it's our Billy.

Fantastic player.

I think it’s relative. To us I’d say he’s priceless as we don’t have anyone even close to him as a goal scorer.

Not many in championship would pay big money for a 31 year old striker. That’s not to say he isn’t brilliant but we play to his strengths not sure many others do, and the ones that do have more expensive options

31 ? 31? He’s 33 in February age is just a number tho

He's up there with the best we've ever had......

Waghorn/Afobe/Assombalonga etc etc - honestly for all the talk of spending money on Championship quality strikers - who would you rather have??

There's a finale to his story, and its him leading us out on the first day of our return to the Premiership.......make it happen Billy!

Thing is I don’t see Bill retiring he’s not exactly blessed with pace so he’s not gonna lose it, one thing he’ll never lose is his know-how how to be in the right place at the right time, can see Sharp playing for a few more years yet aslong as we stay in the champ

Can’t teach that skill

So hard to put a value on him. As others have said he's not blessed with pace but just knows where to be in the box. This coupled with his strength makes him so hard to mark.

The other factor he brings is his relationship with the club and fans. He really is a credit to the club with how he handles all the off field stuff. This goes practically unnoticed.

Makes me smile how a player has 1 or 2 very good games and “he’s the best ever”, then the same player can have 2 or 3 poor games and “he’s crap...get rid”. What’s wrong with saying Billy is an excellent finisher with a fantastic work rate but he won’t last for ever and we need strikers with other attributes, like pace and physicality, appereciate what he brings to the table and that he’s not the greatest.

Always said that Billy effectiveness is very reliant on the team mates around him, hence why sometimes he has very quiet games where he hardly even touches the ball. Billy has similarities to our other legend Keith Edwards, great goal poacher with intelligence to find space but he needs a Colin Morris, Mark Duffy or fullbacks playing well to quickly pass the ball to his feet or head.

Best striker performances I’ve seen at BL are Brian Deane, great all rounder, pace, physicality, great at heading, decent finisher and good crosser.
Followed by Ched Evans during his final 6 months where he was unplayable in some games, (altho was at a lower league 1 standard).
Followed by James Beattie who showed occasional touches of high PL class.
I’d put Sharp and Edwards in a separate category of “best goal poachers” based on pure goal scoring, although must admit that Sharps allround game (hold up play, intelligence and passing) was fantastic yesterday. He seems to be improving that side of his game so much.

I think the man question here is “do we need striker reinforcements in January”? and I’d say yes.

Check our goals this season, they are nearly all tap ins or when we create good chances.
No one can seem to score a goal from nothing, score a really difficult chance or score a worldie.
We also lack a tall/ physical or pacey forward, this would provide more options.

that's not what I said - but thanks for telling me anyway

He's irreplaceable and therefore invaluable. Such a shame Robson/Blackwell were in charge when he came back for the second spell.

one or three non tap ins amongst this lot, goal 6 for example

this is a very key point actually, he shrugs the misses off and waits for the next chance. many strikers these day let their heads drop if they miss a decent chance. He just goes again, and again....

look at Millwall away. Misses a pen... few moments later he gets a chance and bang.. its in the net ! No moping around ...just continues to get in the right places to have a go at chances when they happen

He is priceless. I wouldn't sell him for all the tea in China.
Totally agree with you, Always gives 100% without getting the rewards. Ran his bollox of yesterday and could quite easily have had a Hat-trick. Not bad for a Fat lad From Sheffield.

Glad his third stint with us has coincided with a proper manager instead of someone like Robson or Blackwell.

Sharp and Beattie should have been unplayable if Robson didn't fuck Sharp over by either not playing him or playing him on the wing

Blackwell continued the misuse of him by ordering our defence to bypass the midfield and play hoof balls for him to chase after

Adkins knew better than anybody what Sharp is all about but prevented the team from getting the ball in the penalty area, preferring to play it sideways and backwards

So finally in the last few years of his career we finally get to see him in the way he should have been for the last 12 years

As the overwhelming majority have quite rightly said, his value to us is incalculable. When the sad day arrives he no longer figures we will know by virtue of who replaces him.
Frankly he is our Harry Kane.
