Honest discussion about the atmosphere

It wasn't great on Saturday pal...
When he crossed it, Rak Sakyi scored it and we all cheered. So the loudest cheer of the game came from something Brewster created?

Therefore I doubt him being on the pitch contributes towards the atmosphere in a negative way.

It was the referee that got fans backs up yesterday. The Brewster comment was completely bizarre & unnecessary

Obviously I'm exaggerating things because it amuses me, just as seeing grown adults meltdown at my throwaway comments amuses me. But I genuinely do think we play better without him. And playing better leads to better atmospheres. So there's that.

To be honest, after a stop-start drive from Harrogate which took about two hours, as I walked into the ground I was wishing I'd followed my friend's example and stayed at home to watch it on TV.

By the end I was pleased that I'd made the effort. Arriving home at 11.45 didn't fill me with enthusiasm though - 8pm KOs don't help - but I suppose they suit some people
The drive home was much better though. Being able to talk enthusiastically about the game made the journey seem much quicker than the journey home Saturday!

There was a weird bit last night, 24 minutes in, where the Kop fell absolutely silent even though United were still attacking and were very much in top. Maybe just those odd lulla you get occasionally.

Not complaints overall yesterday, though.

You should know by now that any slight hint of a criticism of their demigod will work them up into a mouth frothing frenzy!

Don't forget, he's a nice lad. He's been unlucky. Give him time and he'll come good (5 years later.......)

Now where did I put my hazmat suit and tin hat, hmmmmmm.

I'm a bit of a football bingo fan. Last night it was the latest I've heard 'Is this a library' on 60 minutes 30 seconds.

Just wanted to mention how good the atmosphere was and also how crap Leeds fans were until they scored which meant we were treated to their usual expansive repatoire of Matching on, We are Leeds, and Leeds, Leeds, Leeds. They really are an embarrassment to Yorkshire as opposed to the pride of Yorkshire.

Saying all that, there were still times when I looked like a maniac on the back of the Kop back of F block. I'm shouting Sheffield United, Sheffield United and not enough joining in. I turned round and shouted come on to the very back of the kop, close to Shoreham View territory and by this point I probably did look like a lunatic! People were looking at me smiling so I just replied with "Ive had nowt to drink neither"!

So proud of the performance yesterday and the atmosphere, top effort to every Blade, especially on the Kop.

Ultras has nothing to do with hooliganism.

It started in Italy in the late 60’s where fans would try to create an atmosphere (like a scene from a battle ground) using tifo displays, large flags, flares, smoke bombs, maybe drums and whistles, with choreographed chanting. The chanting is continuous and doesn’t relate to what’s happening on the pitch.

I’ve been to an Italian match years ago and I found it a bit strange how some fans seemed more interested in watching the opposition fans than watching what was happening on the pitch. Loads of flares and smoke bombs, looked good but not really allowed in England, do they now have safer versions?

This kind of support gradually spread throughout Europe but for some reason never hit England.
The only club that had large flags and banners was probably Liverpool on their Kop.

English fans preferred to show their passion by becoming hooligans, which started in England in the late 60’s.
Also English fans tend to react more based on what is happened on the pitch.
This type of support, the hooligan scene gradually spread through out Europe.

It’s now virtually died out on England but is still relatively widespread in Eastern Europe, Balkans and Russia.

The link below is from a good YT site from Groundhopper FC, a Dutch guy who travels all over Europe to watch football.
He regularly comments how English clubs have probably the worse atmosphere in Europe. German football culture always receives plenty of praise as the gold standard in world football, so maybe we should study that and think about what we can learn from them.

Agree….even at the front of the Kop just behind the goal was quite noisy.

Ultra style groups existed outside before the late sixties.

The sanitised version of Ultras - the one most English fans rightly want to emulate - may not have a link to football hooliganism but the reality in Italy , and many other countries, looks to be different.

And leeds are widely regarded as the best home and away support going.

There's a reason the grounds are crap compared to europe.

Not allowed to stand, not allowed flags, banners, flares, anything of the sort outside your wallet because of 'health and safety'....

Sanitised Britain.

Any comments from opposition players/managers talking about the atmosphere at Bramall Lane?

Just as the match started I thought the Kop sounded in really good voice, felt like a proper match briefly.
I think if it wasn't for having the sun in our eyes on the kop most of the game it might have sustained too.
That's my attempt at positivity for the day.

Are you sure it wasn’t the air temperature?

The first ever ultras group belong to my foreign club I watch at least once every couple seasons .
Hajduk split.
They played in a tournament in south America and took a ship load of ultras over , there called the torcida .

From minute 1 tonight everyone start singing

STAND UP IF YOU HATE WEDNESDAY

This shoud get some atmosphere in the ground, everyone knows the words
Portsmouth fans were brilliant on Sunday - we need to do the same for the last 5 home games - UTB

Until minute 2 when some old geezer behind shouts "siddarn!"

Even as Burnley were on course to drop points, our atmosphere remained very tepid and lacking enthusiasm. If it's like this in this situation, it seems safe to say it'll never be decent ever again

Please no anything bar this, it’s as tinpot as bouncing

It was never gonna happen - half the supporters in the South Stand are that old
they can't even stand for 5 minutes

What is your solution ? the atmosphere is a disgrace until the referee gives a few bad decisions

Having read more and more fan complaints of shit atmospheres up and down the country, United clearly aren't uniquely crap - having genuinely thought we were earlier this season. Modern football may be aesthetically nice (at times), but it's impotent. British crowds (regardless of age, gender etc) are reactionary - there's by and large fck all to react to.
