Honest discussion about the atmosphere

I grew up watching blades on ths kop in the 70s bur the 80s were the best times.
Everyone gathered at the back and the noise was unreal.
The crowd surges when we scored , you could surf your way down the kop.
The fires lit in freezing weather and no stewards to bother with it .
The bog rolls thrown about and ticker tape.
I moved onto the west terrace mid to late 80s the atmosphere was brilliant and full of lads tormenting away fans.
I then gave the south stand a go and g&h block were simply brilliant and I just don't know why it isn't the same anymore.
I'm john Street now but still sing like mad and one or two old faces in their.
Be better if south stand was how it was as it was awesome when g&h and the kop sang together

Then there are the 5 subs which they first added due to COVID, but was kept in for some reason.

Ignoring how it benefits bigger teams with more options on their benches, having the chance to change half of your outfield players (as Keepers are rarely substituted) has made it to easy to change games with subs.

Whereas with the old 3 subs rule, I always felt that you had to be smarter with your subs and who you sent on to try and impact the game as getting 2 or all 3 of your subs wrong could cost you the game.

Slightly off topic, while I was watching the Euro's (on ITV), it was in one of the group games where (can't remember exactly which one) one of commentators (either Aly Mcoist or Sam Matterface) said that the 5 subs rule was ruining the fitness of players as they are tiring earlier in games as more of them can be subbed off.
I don’t think five subs ignores how it benefits big teams. It was brought in at their behest. That change along with 100 minute matches is another weighting of the scales in favour of the rich establishment. Woe betide any cheeky upstart daring to win at the 70 minute mark. The big dogs will just bring £150m of talent on and play til they score.

True, more so as you can now have 9 players on your bench which benefits the bigger squads more than the 5 subs rule.

For me, it takes away the difficulty of making smart substitutions that you needed to get right (which wasn't the easiest thing to do especially when you were losing), as now you can just throw more players on until it works.

A full capacity safe standing Kop would solve all of the atmosphere issues.
An a different level. But on the away terrace for Bradford v Morecambe on Tuesday. It was SO much better than seats, even for those of us oldies with dodgy knees. I know the away end usually ends up all standing, but it's not quite the same.
Not convinced by the drumming from both ends though - felt a bit contrived. At least it's not that terribly played sodding trumpet from England games though

Portsmouth didn't have much trouble creating an atmosphere last week (at least from midway through the first half), maybe ask them how they do it during a 0-0 draw

They probably allow friends to buy tickets together,

Thought kop and G/H sounded decent yesterday. Just the usual grumbling and crinkling of werthers wrappers where I was middle of the south stand.

What is the the word they call them? That word that describes them? The fans, the fans that dance around? With flags. They simply go to the game and worship everything about their club. Every referee decision isn't based on what happens, but on a corrupt administration. We go to the game, and expect

Hey ! Have you tried getting into a Werthers lately, them opal fruits are the worst, krypton factor level that. Sorry for waking you up.

I have seen this crop up a few times on here, particularly since COVID, but we need to start having a proper, open and honest discussion about the atmosphere at Bramall Lane at the moment and we need to do it without getting touchy and defensive.

I know this is quite a delicate subject because it is not a nice thing to have to admit and I think that is probably why the recent posts about this have been met with some negativity and so many excuses.

We need to come to the terms with the fact that the atmosphere at home games over the past 3/4 years has just not good enough and it is becoming borderline embarrassing.

I know people want different matchday experiences and it is not for everyone to be stood in the Kop singing for 90 minutes, and I know that many bring their young families and do not want it to be too rowdy.

But since COVID, for the most part, it has been truly awful and I think over the past year or so even the sections of the ground that have been doing their best to inject a bit of noise have slowly started to give up.

I personally want a raucous atmosphere for my matchday experience and I, like many others, probably fell in love with this club as a kid for that reason.

I know our identity as blades is built around the fact we support a proper club, with proper, honest down-to-earth, loyal fans, hailing from what I think is the best stadium in the world and I love us and our fans to bits. But the fiery cauldron, which only 9 years ago, Mauricio Pochettino described as the best atmosphere has ever experienced in England, is slowly becoming a myth that at the moment feels so far away.

I completely get that it can’t be amazing every week and when its 0-0 or cold or a midweek game it might not lend itself to being lively in the stands but since COVID I can probably count on one hand the amount of times when I have left thinking wow that was class today. And why should we only make noise when Man City are in town or when our centre half is clattering someone or the ref is bad? Or only when we are playing a brand of football we deem ‘proper’? I just don’t see it as valid to say ‘ah well we need to be entertained first…’.

What are we going to do about it? Obviously a club like ours should and would never go down the cringe faux ultras route of clubs like Boro, which is just not compatible with English fan culture in my opinion. But this issue is not going to be resolved by excuses and getting touchy about this.

I think the only solution I can see is if safe standing is brought in, which by all accounts is absolutely miles off, but at least this way, those that want this sort of matchday experience can be catered for and those that don’t can also be catered for.

Would be good to hear some honest thoughts on this.

Bring back A-block blayards

Well, with the amount of shit we pump into it with all this fossil fuel burning it ain't great is it.

What do we do about it?

I know for sure that singing about shoreham Street boys screwing someone's wife ain't going to help the air quality.

And I'm not a scientist!

I am glad it is being brought up though, air quality is a very important topic.

Fuck me ....sounds like how ah lass starts off when she's pissed off.....

Additional things like agreeing to stop piping in music into those sections from fifteen minutes before kick off until after all the players have left the pitch after the whistle have been implemented.

Something as simple as that could make all the difference. Easy to do, and wouldn't cost a penny.
By the time kick off comes, the crowd would have baited themselves into a physiological place where they're ready to do battle along side the team, rather than be on the outside looking in.

Are we actually top and 3 points clear? Could hear a pin drop at the Lane today.

Oh please, let's just insert the "only Plymouth" or "it was not a balmy 25 degrees" or "ref didn't do anything obviously stupid" or "it's before Christmas and I can't afford marching powder" excuses

Why in 2024 are we still having the arcane rule of ‘Tossing for ends’ before kick off ? Scrap it. It’s meant to be home field advantage let the home team chose which way they want to kick.

Football is meant to be in the entertainment industry and every single home fan at every stadium hates when the home team doesn’t get to attack their main home end second half.. ruins the atmosphere and the season ticket holders have paid top dollar around the country too.
