I don't like the decision to sell Leonard and don't have him down as a mistake signing. He was useful and will get better.

But what is to be admired is that...

1. We sign players who won't be hard to shift if things don't work out, not putting them on wages beyond their worth
2. We generally sign players with resale value
3. Wilder's not too stubborn and egotistical to admit a mistake and move players on shortly after signing them

Number 3 is something all managers should heed. Got to move on from mistakes as quickly as possible if you want to stay in a job - it's a ruthless business and you don't get a lot of time.

The previous January window was also:
  • Hanson – loaned within a year, binned after 18 months
  • Carruthers – on the way to being binned
  • O’Shea – left as his deal expired at the end of that season
Lafferty’s loan was made permanent that month, but he could also go onto the possibly on the way out lost given he’s not made a single league appearance since promotion despite being fully fit throughout.

I’ll be honest, he’s got a tough January record to argue for signings to be made for the long-term good of the team...

I don't have a problem with Leonard, Evans and Holmes being sold on if we are making a profit on them after all they were not claiming a first team spot. Evans had the most games but he was never going to keep Norwood or the returning Coutts out of the team.

Wilson was poor. Holmes a strange one, due to age and pedigree.Evans and Leonard have gone for a big profit, so are obviously a big success

Maybe Leonard didn't settle up north it is a long way from Sarthend.

Aside from Norwood been another underwhelming transfer window.
Midfield looks strong, defence decent but up front we're treading water.
Maybe Woodburn will improve but otherwise we look a bit journeyman in the final third.

The “profits” on Evans and Leonard are a complete false flag.

Natural player inflation over the period takes care of that.

Reality is, we have lost out on both in real terms.

Don’t let the “profit” strap line fool ya !!!!

Is that the same player inflation that created the price we paid for Oliver Norwood?

I’ll be honest. I think Evans is thoroughly decent player at a good age who might well become a very good second tier player if he learns consistency and concentration (he lacks both). Leonard is just unsuited to our style but I predict success at Millwall. He’s ideal for them.

Finally, Holmes was a punt, and Wilson flopped but was only a loan.

So I’ve no complaints with any of the decisions to buy or sell. In fact I applaud the decisiveness and willingness to gamble given a low budget.

In what way?! We sold both for more than we paid for them. We're in a better position than we would have been had we not signed them. Player inflation helped us with that; in effect it paid for more than half of the Norwood fee

I can't have been the only one who thought Leonard just needed more time, a few starts (in his actual position) and a bit of confidence behind him. He could have been a real player for us. I think he'll go on and do very well at Millwall. A shrewder move would have been just to loan him with the option of a recall in January. I believe the deal is loan-to-buy so that's that.

When u sign a player u have no idea what will happen , how he will settle in and perform , I would have signed everyone of those players , it just didn't work out and they were moved on at a profit .

Holmes only started 1 game and was our best player, fuck know what happened with him.

Problem (for me anyway) is with the exception of Norwood we are tweeking the team with the signings. If this gets us to the next level it's worth it but we are still a striker away from being a top Championship team, having said that anybody who follows anything of what I say will know that only a Prem reserve will be an improvement on what we have, I am truly happy we haven't signed any of Hogan, Gallagher, Cole, Eisa, Fletcher they really did look average (at best) on their 'greatest moments' videos. We are at a point in our lifecycle where we are swapping like for like and the players we are losing are good enough to come back and hurt us.

I’m intrigued to know how watertight these loan-to-buy deals are. If the player’s leg falls off or he strangles the chairman’s chihuahua, can the purchase be stopped?

I’ve had the same thoughts about Norwood, impure thoughts, Father. ;) If he sets the division on fire this season, and sticks another couple of million on his value, and a lower level prem team comes a ‘knockin, would a ‘mutually beneficial’ deal arise for all parties? A bit like when Coventry somehow bought Robert Jarni from Real Betis and quickly sold him to Real Madrid. The ability to purchase must be an option as opposed to an obligation? Otherwise manu would be touting Wilson about like there’s no tomorrow. :)

In hindsight jan transfer window. Was a bigger disaster than we thought at the time. As all 4 have gone for differing reasons holmes really odd as i thought he had potential. Leonard just didnt fit it happens, evans couldnt wait to leave & wilson was useless. but at least unlike few managers he taken action & rectified it very quickly. Also hes made a profit. So no harm no foul.

As ive said earlier today to use a phrase that harry redknapp hated he at the moment done good wheeler dealing. as he using his lower league managerial expierence with a bigger budget, where like at ie Northampton or oxford best players are poached every yr & they have replace them creatively

My fear, and it’s a little fear, is that CW’s weakness is similar to Bassett’s, in that he knows a pool of players very well & recruits from them & we’re successful, but when they get old & need replacing, he can’t pick ‘em or at least pick them with the same regularity. So DB’s Wirmola & Falconer, is CW’s Evans & Holmes.

The area we needed to improve was goal scorers to take the chances we create - none in.

Player value goes down in the club accounts year by year (amortisation I believe)

"This demonstrates how clubs write-off the transfer value of a player over the life-time of their contract and also illuminates that because Robinho was worth £16.3m two years into his four year deal, Manchester City actually made an accounting profit on his transfer of £1.7m. Fans would see the sale of a player for £18m bought two years previously for £32.5m as bad business. The club in their accounts will class it as a £18.1m profit improvement."
