Again, apples and oranges. If Scougall got 15 goals a season from midfield, as platini did, of course you wouldn't tell him to defend. But he doesn't. He scored once. Basham didn't score in the league. We need better.

Scougall would be more similar to Giresse, but we do play a different formation than the diamond of France mid 80s, and it's probably time to stop those comparisons. Tigana scored once for France by the way...
;)

Top players . Thought John Barnwell was there with them.

UTB.
He didnt play many games for us, got subbed when we were losing at home to Bristol City in Sept 1970 and John Tudor (who came on as sub) scored the last minute equaliser despite that we were losing 3-0 with about 20 mins left. Didnt play again for more than three months. He scored twice in the 3-0 win against Charlton on his return to the team (replacing the injured Colin Addison), played only 5 more matches (last one was 2-1 defeat at Bolton) before new signing Trevor Hockey replaced him for the 2-1 win at Oxford

just shows how a team can change personal during a season the squad that finished with that unbeaten run to win promotion was a far cry from the one that kicked off the season all credit to gentlemen john for that.Pity cloughy couldnt do the same as we started last season with a makeshit squad and although he changed a number of players we never really looked the part ,maybe we will get the game changers in early doors so we can make a good start as warnock did when we won promotion to the prem. That season we were in a position
after a third of the matches that meant playoff form for the remaining two thirds would see us do it.that was the case as Reading ran away with it we did struggle but got there in the end thanks to a great early season and strong finish. Over to you cloughy!!

Few mentions of Peterboro's midfield slash defender Michael Bostwick but what about his midfield partner that night when they beat us this season Jack Payne? I thought he looked a tidy midfielder and scored a decent goal too I recall. He's been transfer listed somewhat surprisingly!

The title didn't say "Technically poor midfielder" or similar though.

Why do you seem to assume a holding midfielder must be technically poor or not offer anything in an attacking sense? Why say that holding midfielders only do half a job when they do a role in a team that allows other players to attack more, thus giving them good balance overall?

Sergio Busquets scoring record for Barcelona is worse than Nick Montgomery's for us. It still seems to work ok for them. Andrea Pirlo is amazing to watch in a holding role, even though he doesn't bomb up and down the pitch constantly. When Reed started there last season it was also because of good distribution skills from deep, not because he wins more tackles than Doyle. You get different things from different holding midfielder types, but the important thing remains that the team need good balance from an attacking and defending perspective.
busquets. dirtiest playerin world football.. never thought i'd live to see monty mentioned in same breath as Pirlo though

Clough has said he's not seeking midfielders, only defenders and strikers

I take it he's relying on having "like a new signing" back in Wallace?
