Higdon back?

I can't believe some people on here are trying to say that saying selling Matty Done is a good idea. On the basis of a lack of tactical awareness.
It's madness to sell your best players particularly strikers. We need more fire power and we need to build the club up, not sell the best bits off.
Our selling mentality has kept us in this League for too long.

Your idea of tactical awareness and mine differ.
I don't think he's one of our best players - far from it.
I think we could replace him with someone with more firepower.

As always everyone has a selling mentality apart from Real Madrid who have a status symbol mentality. But that's besides the point.

The majority of games under Clough Done was played as a lone striker still notched.
A lethal finisher at this level would be madness to consider letting him go.

I think the jury's out on whether he's a lethal finisher. Career record is ~36 goals in over 300 games. I recognise that he played at the back but it's not established that he's a great goalscorer.

And more to the point he doesn't readily fit in with how we want to play.

Billy played two good passes into him at Scunthorpe and he was nowhere near either of them.

He's useless wide left or right - can't beat a man, so he has to play up front - and his all round game is not good enough for that.

He simply isn't that good for us. (And as has been pointed out many times played his part in costing us three goals in a row.)

One player I think we could get a good fee for, and upgrade for a better fit.

Maybe. Nice to see someone running about a bit though. To be fair, Steve Neville did too.

He was converted to a central front man at Rochdale he gets in scoring positions and will finish 80% of chances no doubt.

Done or Sammon , Done or Sammon , Done or Sammon , Done or Sammon , Done or Sammon , Done or Sammon , Done or Sammon , Done or Sammon ...erm..let me think ...

We don't have to compare Higdon with Done, Sharp and Sparky.
We have to compare him with Sammon.
He might not run around as much but I'd say he's just as good at holding the ball up, and goal scoring-wise he's better.
I'm not his biggest fan but as a target man he's at least as good as what we've got.

Disagree. His lack of workrate and mobility means that if he starts the game, it’s often like playing with 10 men. Sammon’s overall contribution to the team is far better. The only scenario where I’d rather use Higdon is if we’re chasing a game with 10-15 minutes left and bombarding the opposition penalty box. He’s handy to chuck on as a sub in that scenario but that’s about it.

They were saying it was a good idea to sell Murphy too, that worked out well didn't it. It is not a good idea to sell anyone until you have someone better in place.

Done or Mcnulty?

Mcnulty deserves a chance at this club playing up top in a 2 (he's never really been given that chance) - just an opinion, but Sharp and Mcnulty could make a great pairing.

Done has a very good record since converting to a striker.

Using his goal scoring record as a defender to try and slag him off is idiotic.

In a team under Clough that created virtually no chances he scored a hatful and proved that when played to his strengths he WILL score goals. Simple as that.

Still trying to get My head round the mentality of taking about 300 games compared to goals when he was a defender!!

Good post agree with all that.
Or we could sell him back to Rochdale for half of what we paid Keith Hill would be laughing his bollocks off !

Have I got this right ,we should sell Done and put Higdon into the first team while getting rid of sammon and get McNulty back ?
And we accuse McCabe of not wanting to go up.
Derek Dooleys statue has more mobility than Higdon ,McNulty plays when he on the blob , surely we are better than these 2.

I too despair at those suggestions.

McNulty is a good option to have, other than that i agree, you have it right sitters :)

I think Sammon's treated unfairly. He's far better than Higdon. I know he's not amazing but I think it's ridiculous to have a go at him for not getting flick ons etc when what he's trying to do instead is control the ball. Flick ons near enough never go to a team mate, whereas when he does control it he manages to play a pass. I think people have assumed he's a target man because of his size when that's not necessarily his game.

Totally agree.

It was evident from the Newcastle game what his strengths are, the ball sticks to him, he then lays it off, usually pretty well.

Watched the game again yesterday and second half he played really well. There were a number of lost headers but many more times he won thee ball, kept it, and laid it off really well.

Seems like no matter what someone has to get grief.

Not had a sniff. Even as rub a dub.

Always thought he would end up back with Paul Cook at Pompey.
