It was a great recovery but it was terrible judgement in the first place. It clearly wasn't a pass back, he should've collected it.

Basham played the ball back to Henderson when he sliced it. He then parried it out with his hands, should that be an indirect free kick? You can't touch a back pass with your hands.

You could say that he swiped at the ball and therefore that's a different passage of play but if that's the case, GKs could just flick it up into their hands from their feet?

That was my reaction at the time too. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen us concede a free kick for a backpass – seen us win a couple, but not concede.

I thought it was a backpass, it never crossed my mind that it wasn't but I was on the Kop so i didn't have the best view.

I was watching the Brentford iFollow stream, and the commentators were saying the same - that the ball shouldn’t have gone back to Henderson as Brentford had the ball. Still no idea what they were talking about.

When the rule was made in 1992, they called that scenario a 'manufactured' backpass. I don't think that Henderson's miskick would fall into that category.

Yeah, I think they were arguing that flat ball or not McGoldrick stopped the play by picking it up and not the ref. Thought it was daft he didn't just punt it out and then tell the ref.

My understanding is that the ball becomes dead at the moment it goes flat. If it happens from a goal kick/corner/free kick then you retake, if it happens elsewhere it's a drop ball. But presumably it's up to players to signal to the ref rather than stop the game themselves, but then given you have physical evidence that the ball was already dead maybe that doesn't matter.
