I must have completely missed the idea of this thread if Stuart McCall is a candidate.
Absolutely class player who, though past his best, was never "shite".

Jamie Murphy was proper shite until Clough arrived and we then saw what he could really do.

Don't think that was true about Murphy either, I saw him first away at Oxford (which may or may not have been his debut) he came on as sub and he tried things, had tricks and pace and was direct , I thought, this guy looks good, unfortunately his next game one or two things didn't come off for him and some of our fans, you know the loud ones who are utterly infallible in their judgement about a player within five minutes of watching him play decided he was shit and the sheep amongst out following went along with it. What he was was a young lad moving away from home, new country, new club, new context and he undoubtedly needed a boost to his confidence and an arm around his shoulder. He didn't get it and it and in the end it took us a long time to see the real player that was there all the time.

Can I add Lee Sandford to the mix? Generally underwhelming but turned out to be reasonably solid at either left back or centre back and chipped in with the odd important goal. Reading in the cup in our run to the Semis in '98 sstands out.

Edit: Who knew he even had an aoutbiography out... Anyone read it?

Greg Halford didn't exactly set the place alight initially. Ended up being pretty solid and dependable after that.
