He got the Ball (First) - Still a Red Card

The key is being 'out of control', as soon as your feet leave the ground you're not. Compare that to the challenge on Sterling yesterday which, to be fair, looked like a penalty at 1st glance but the defender was in reasonable control, did play the ball 1st and it was simply the slide and follow though that caused him to up-end Sterling.

A clumsy, mistimed tackle doesn't have to be a booking but these days is 99 times out of 100. Tackling as most of us know, and remember it, has now gone out of the game and when you add that to the over-acting and cheating which goes on in the modern game it's nigh on impossible for referees. The sooner the FA / FIFA clamp down on over-acting and cheating the better.

I'm afraid you end up with the game you deserve.

When this was a game played by men that wouldn't even have been a foul. You got the ball, if you took some of the man as well, BONUS!
Now it's played by nonces (and in general watched by such, screaming for a foul everytime one of their players is touched) the rules have changed (not surprising thinking about Platini and how he reacted to anyone with the afront to tackle him) and the referees have a nigh on impossible task of sorting out proper fouls with intent and player over reaction.

It's really sad watching most of the time. Players with the "right to go down" if someone farts in the box, players rolling over four and five times before jumping to their feet (that cunt from Chelsea on MOTD) and the game being spoiled by going to 10 v 11 at the slightest opportunity.
I still remember Alan Ball being dismissed at BDTBL, it was a huge event, a sending off. Now it's common place and the game is much the worse for it.

of course what you have written is correct - my argument with stupid Baxter, is the players KNOW what can happen and still do it - it's just zero brain cell syndrome.

Higdon v chezzer, Bash v PV, Baxter v Cov = 1 point, should have been 9 points.

I'm another siding that it deserved a red. Not too clear at the time as the ball was won and Baxter's other foot was hidden behind his leading leg but having seen the replay there can be no argument with the decision. It seems NC concurs.

Remember that one well, he got a second booking for fouling Hockey (the 1st one was for fouling TC) and the Lane crowd erupted with loud cheers. Ball responded with slow handclapping to all directions of the ground. We won the match with a Dearden goal in October 1972

No disagreement with me regarding stupidity and knowing what would happen. Said he was going as soon as it happened.

My point was that it's not that long ago that it would have been applauded as a whole hearted attempt to win the ball, the opponent would have stood up and got on and the bench would have kept itself under control.
Different standards (fucking sight lower from all concerned) apply now and not for the better in my opinion.

I'm happy with the rule changes because they do encourage skill over thuggery. But what hasn't happened is a parallel tightening up of rules surrounding feigning and general twattery.

Missed the player though...

I take it if people see the stills above they will now be in doubt that it was a red card!??!

Looking at the stills it looks like his arse took the player out!

Sitting on G block I thought it didn't look high, and he took the ball, certainly a yellow. Looked worse on TV but these stills have changed my thoughts back to my original opinion.

The players' reaction didn't help.

There are only 7 reasons you can recieve a red card (copied and pasted below). Baxter was sent off for serious foul play which is "a foul commited with excessive force"
  1. Serious foul play
  2. Violent conduct
  3. Spitting at an opponent or any other person
  4. Denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
  5. Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
  6. Using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
  7. Receiving a second caution in the same match

So you don't think it's a red card?
  • Two Footed
  • Studs showing
  • Over the ball
  • Caught the lads ankle

From our view in South stand (and not seen it on video yet), Baxter's heel appears to get the ball and because of that he goes over the ball and straight through to the Coventry player. My eyes aren't bril these days but that's how it seems.

I was just staggered at why he did it - and that includes Higdon at Chezzer and Basham at P Vale - off their feet, out of control leaving the ref no option.

Baxter has zero defence unless there are some rose tinted glasses Blades out their?

Baxter's was by far the worst of the three.

Both Hidgon and Bash were hard challenges but Higdon led with one foot and it was totally on the ground without studs showing, Bash was a 50 50 where both him and Brown went in hard. While they both gave the referee the chance to send them off I reckon on a few occasions they would get away with a yellow, almost an orange card offence as it were.

Baxters was two footed, over the ball, studs showing and dangerous. The most blatent red you will see and I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise having seen it again.

You must be sat near me. I am on V row

I thought it was a sending off due to how the game is looked at nowadays as others have elluded to. What i did notice is the Coventry player went to go over the top with one leg also but got there later than Baxter, so he ultimately made it look worse and also covered up what he was trying to do to Baxter, Baxter illustrates this in the highlights mattbianco1 kindly puts up for us after the challenge with him putting his foot up.

What i also don't get is although Baxter shouldn't have given the ref a reason to send him off, how he has ultimately cost us 2 points. There was no evidence to suggest this beforehand, with this sending off or any other sending off for that matter, teams when down to ten men always seem to put more effort in and i could quite easily see us losing that game before Baxter got sent off as much as i could say we'd have won it.

I think it's more to do with the nature of the game FB..if a Footballer gets his ankles tapped and stays on his feet, then it's unlikely the Ref will blow up for a foul...if he goes down, then the Ref is more likely to give a foul...even then the Ref doesn't always give anything,so that's when all the theatricals come in...I don't like to see it,but I can see why they do it...it's when they go down without being touched that's pathetic.
In Rugby if somebody tries to pull you down or tackle you...your generally not going to gain anything by going down...at least we've never seen a Footballer bring fake blood onto the pitch.

I've seen a few bring fake guts and sweat on.
