You've chosen an excellent time to visit. I lived in Orkney for 7 years in the 80s. May and June was usually the best time to visit, and I do feel a little envious! Weather forecast looks good so hopefully it doesn't get too windy - Stromness camp site is very exposed - but a lovely view.

I agree with you re Shetland. I was there 2 years ago and thought the coastal scenery was spectacular. I'm going to Lewis and Harris so I'm hoping to have the same opinion as you. Not on a bike with a tent though!

I’m jealous. Discovering those places for the first time was a joy that has stayed with me. Ain’t gonna presume to tip you, other than to say make sure you head for the west coasts. Utterly gorgeous. Sigh.

We're hoping to do a boat trip to St Kilda, but for my part, only if the sea conditions are fairly calm - my sea legs aren't all that good. I've not really made any plans yet as I know the friends I'm travelling with will have it pretty much sussed.

Oh my goodness. St Kilda is my personal holy grail. I’ve read all the books. Would so much love to go there. Don’t you have to volunteer to do conservation work, to be able to stay there?

I think if you stay that is correct but as I understand it, you can visit for the day.
 
Is this thread not OT? I live on a spectacular Island when the weather is good. When bad, shocking. TT arrives in 15 days. COYRAWW.

The Isle of Man, most famous for the TT and having an Oldham player piss on the wall in a chippy.

Lewis and Harris are brilliant, though weather can be a problem.

It costs a lot. We were nearly 2 weeks on Lewis and Harris, and there were no sailings because of the weather.:( I’m not bitter, though.:mad:
 
Never mind having a “Chris”, more worried about your facilities for a “Brad Pitt”. Wouldn’t fancy wading out into the surf in those inclement conditions. :eek::eek::eek:

Going to Harris for 18th time this year. The St Kilda boat for visits goes from Leverburgh. Their big office for the visits is in Tarbert - Kilda Cruises - you should book though - kildacruises.co.uk. If the weather is good it is a day to remember - quite a few hours on St Kilda and a ride round all the bird sites on the way back. Puffins are amazing. If it is rough the boat ride can be exciting - it is a very powerful boat!

For interest, the Buzzcocks ex drummer, John Maher lives on Harris, and has a workshop on Leverburgh pier where he builds high performance VW engines for refurbished VW campers.

I have never met them, but I have seen a Harris Blades flag at some matches.

If you play golf, Harris golf club is an absolute gem. Faldo played there on holiday once and left a signed fiver in the honesty box. The Faldo Fiver is now a competition each year.

The distillery in Tarbert is a great visit - set up by a rich American Anderson Bakewell.

If you enjoy hills, beaches, swimming in crystal clear ice-cold sea and a bit of rain you’ll fall in love with Harris - we also know people who have a wet holiday and will never go back!
