Darren Purse:- “In Sheffield, the kids went to school together, and fans of the different clubs can live next door to each other.
Someone might hate the bloke next door. There was hatred in some of the things people said. I’ve never heard anything like it.
“My kids were at school. Someone else’s would say ‘look Dad, that’s Darren Purse’, and his dad would say ‘don’t talk to him, he’s scum.’
“There’s no wonder there’s hatred when dads are teaching their sons to say that sort of thing."

Would anyone on here say that sort of thing to their kids?
I've been reading a lot of comments lately about Wednesday "scum", "sub-human piglets", generalisations about anyone who comes from Liverpool.
I suspect that a lot of it is tongue-in-cheek, exaggerated or keyboard-warrier type stuff.
But it seems there are actually people out there in the real world who are teaching their kids to hate other kids based on which football team they support.
Is that you? If it is, don't you think you're taking things a bit too far?
Or is it me who's in the minority? I dislike Wednesday, Megson, West Ham and hooligans in general but I don't HATE their fans.

i think you should visit porktalk and read a few of the threads dedicated to united fans being tramps and scum who attack women and children

maybe then you will understand why i hate them

people who don't understand banter and rivalry in general are the ones that get confused by all this.

It's an entirely non argument.

If I had the wings of a sparrow or the dirty arse of a crow, I might not actually bother flying over Hillsboro tomorrow, or any other day for that matter, just to use the toilet.

Further to judge's post, I only really dislike (not 'hate') West Ham fans for their comments post-Tevez and Birmingham fans for their goading after they pipped us to the second automatic promotion spot in another lifetime.

Thanks for the patronising reply Swiss. I understand "banter and rivalry" perfectly well thanks.

As my old mum says, two wrongs don't make a right.

the hatred the pigs feel towards us ,i think comes from the fact they are largely not form sheffield and see coming to brammall lane as an intimidating experience
coming from places ive never heard of like long eaton and dinglesville and entering the big city ]
they shit it and every song they sing reflects their fear

die die piggy piggy die
this city is ours fuck off united
theyre all fucking wankers at the lane

all very big brave things to say when youre surrounded by thousands of other nobheads ,talk to a pig at work or in the street they dont have this attitude ,reason being they are fucking cowards

I think a lot of it nowadays is media-led behaviour. You can't be a proper fan of X unless you declare your perma-seething entity of Y. Banter apparently.

So says the man who lives in Liverpool....

Sociologsts say that supporting a sports team gives us a sense of identity to assuage our basic tribal instincts (need to belong, safety in numbers instinct etc.).
Following which there is always a base desire for one tribe to exert superiority over another tribe as part of the survival instinct.
Basically sporting allegiance is a relatively safe form of warfare.
In other words it is perfectly natural to hate the piggy b$stards.

Wouldn't you?

Weirdo

Being brought up in S6 all my life I will often be in hillsborough on a match day but wouldnt dream of wearing anything Blade related. So why on derby day would a woman and her son walk down London Road and expect nothing to happen when they have their wendy shirts on? I know they should be able to but common sense surely tells you not to. I wont wear club colours at all when we play wendy, L##ds or cardiff just for my own piece of mind

I've never been able to understand the "hate" thing, but then I'm of an age when I can remember when things were different.

We had lively banter and keen rivalry in the 1950s but things rarely got to the point of attacking rival fans. In those days nobody wore replica shirts of course, and there wasn't even segregation of fans in the ground. Modern fans would find that unbelievable.

Today it's all got very unpleasant. The hate - the abuse - where will it end? With violence - even death of rival fans?

Time to cool it, surely.

i think mr purse has taken the whole thing far too seriously.. ok someone called him wednesday 'scum' but that is a different league to hating someone.. he didn't actually mention being hated.. the original poster took it to that level.. 'hate' is a word that should be used with extreme caution:rolleyes:

whats that supposed to mean ?

You are having a go at Wednesday fans for not living in Sheffield.

I suggest that had something to do with the fact that 50 million people had just been killed because of hate between nations and political ideologies. "Hate" around supporting a football team would have seemed incrediby trivial.

Purse actually mentioned hatred three times in his quote. It's not me putting words in his mouth or exaggerating them.
I'm sure the bloke who told his kid "don't talk to him, he's scum" was only joking and had a big grin on his face.
I'm sure the kid realised his dad was just having a bit of banter and the daft, over-sensitive footballer took it all the wrong way.

There has been a bit of an inflation in this whole hate thing since I was a kid. In the mid 70's we didn't call the other lot "pigs" and "scum" (unless, perhaps, if you were a hoolie) but it seems perrfectly acceptable now.

>Purse actually mentioned hatred three times in his quote
no that was perceived hatred.. the quote says the guy called him scum.. so go figure.. anyway the guy was a c**t so lets not fall out :D
ps i have an irrational(?) hatred of the french btw.. ?? :D .. umm and the israelis and people from barnsley and apple computer.. and .. i could go on!!

>There has been a bit of an inflation in this whole hate thing
that is what i was trying to get at thanks Darren.. it's like the F word.. it simply doesn't have the same connotations as 20 years ago.. it has become watered down

And that's a footballer who is a Millwall fan.
So there is not a jot of trouble when Shammers play Millwall then?
They all get along swimmingly eh? Only if they have been chucked in the Thames.

I miss the banter immensely living outside of the city - the web just isn't the same and (probably due to there being no face to face contact) it usually results in "you're all (insert derogatory object)s because you (insert hideous and unproven atrocity) that time in (insert vague memory of season).

Gullibly I followed a link to PorkTalk and after the initial hilarity at looking how stupid every post was, a gradual realisation that I was reading pretty much exactly the same posts but in blue and white that I'd read on the forum I'd followed the link on. We were being accused of exactly what we were accusing them of - which, given we're probably all very similar people from the same place means that they are all equally true and untrue.

Growing up in the 80's Wednesday always (tried) to lord it over us at school and in town - I'm sure that a Wednesday fan in their early 20s now (despite knowing I have a prejudice I still picture him as overweight, with ginger hair, glasses and wearing a tight replica shirt) would say the same.

I hate them on derby day, I can barely tolerate them on any other day - but that said, some of my best friends are Wednesday fans. It's not big and not clever, but it probably puts 5k on each club's average crowd over the season (derby day plus all the guilt visits so that piggy mates can't call you a set of part-timers), keeps The Star alive, keeps Radio Sheffield in listeners and the pubs ticking over.

I think people of our age have learned to do what Big chief Sitting Bull said to John Wayne in the film She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and I quote;
''We smoke um pipe of peace have many drink of fire water, Hallelujah'' ;) To translate It's just not worth it!!

The thing is that there is plenty of people who call the opposite side of the city, all sort of names, claim to be better than the other side, and look to rubbish the other side of city, but deep down we are all friends and neighbours in the same city, so there has to be a limit. I grew up in a Wednesday stronghold when they was the dominant team in the city, and i kopped grief off them every day, but it was par for the course and its only a handful of their supporters who i dislike, i've got plenty of Wednesdayite friends, and they give me stick, and i give them stick back, but at the end of the day i don't hate them, and quite happily have a beer with them, its just the football team they have chosen to support is the one dislike by proxy of being a Blade.

It's not the majority who are the problem, as it the majority who know where to draw the line, know where the banter starts and stops, and know how to enjoy the banter without it being anything else sinister. It's just the minority who by seem unable to grow up, and seem to thrive on creating trouble and acting like kids rather than adults.

I treated it with the contempt it deserved ;)

The violence and threats of violence are in the main very limited. You get a few idiots in their own world who think this is normal, but its blown up out of proportion.

Telling your kids not to talk to Wednesday scum is hardly a cause for concern. My dog responds to the command to take a dump by being told to have a "Wednesday"

The media blow these things way out of proportion and you seem to be doing that as well (although your intention is to raise a reasoned debate)

Wouldn't you?

Weirdo

Its chuffing miles from Switzerland and my little sparrow wings have a job on carrying my crow's arse :)
