Seems all out of the blue, same as Whiteman really, same situation with both...with the receiving club ecstatic they've managed to get the player in perm. Always had the impression Gilmour was highly thought of here.

Maybe he is but Slater is a year younger and plays in the same position. If we kept Gilmour on some might accuse the club of blocking the progress of Slater or the next crop of 16-18 year olds.

Fair comment, and Slater has made the first team, so perhaps the staff and Wilder rates him more.

I had a nice friendly chat with Travis Binnion at the U23s at Crewe yesterday. I'm very much a fan. Close to Man-Crush. I dote on every word he says & find a lot of what he says very interesting. He never says "between me & you". But, I wouldn't want to break any confidence. In general terms, he discussed the natural frustration of football people, with a winning mentality, like him, Geary, Dungworth, Wadsworth, not being able to pick the best side to win a particular game. But, needing to pick players, and put them in positions to further their development, rather than win. For eg, George Cantrill in the middle of a three, pushing Sam Graham out right. To put Cantrill under pressure & let him have some exposure to that role. And, eg asking Stephen Mallon to play LWB, rather than the roving Midfield or up top role he is more suited to. Travis mentioned something along the lines of "we're playing two nines & two tens today". I'm emphasising, he was not moaning, or wishing it any other way. He was just trying to explain that he & the others have to rein in their winning mentality for the greater good. A nice insight I thought.
That winning mentality is good that it is reigned in, in most aspects of football coaching. It would be interesting if you asked him about whe he has asked a player to play in a particular way ( not position necessarily) and if/when that player pulls off a technical move he described, how he felt? That is the most rewarding aspect of coaching.

Yes but a club is like an iceberg, we only see the floating bit, not everything that happens beneath it.

We’ve got a limited budget, very limited, so we can’t afford to sub the wages of players who we don’t think are going to be top end championship players or better. Sometimes we’ll get it wrong, like Liverpool may have done with Coady (they could certainly do with him as a squad player right now).

I remember discussing the release of Dimaio and Khan with a poster on here, saying it was perhaps a bit hasty. Turns out CJ Hamilton was the decent one. Who knew? I certainly didn’t.

I'd hope that how many players we guide to a professional career, regardless of where is used as a recruitment aid.

And letting players go permanently when they want to, rather than hanging on to them when they are nowhere near the first team is also something that will reflect well on prospective players/parents of players
