Interested to get some views on whether this has a positive impact on how (some, maybe many of you) viewed NC's transfer record at the club.

2.5m(?) for Harry up front plus now another 1.7m. 2m for Che? 1.5m for Murphy(?).

The Brayford deal and the "bloating" of the squad was used as a massive stick to beat Clough with but looking back, the fees plus the cup runs, there is no way he's not left a surplus.

No daft shouting or insults lads, it's just an honest question.

He was replaced by Adkins I think that says enough about the massive sticks used to beat clough.

Transfer fees only tell half the story though.

Haven't we brought in free transfers and loaners on massive wages.
Also paying off manager contracts plus the contracts of all the backroom staff would be very costly.
It makes me wonder how much Hammond on his own cost the club?

Personally I didn't mind Nigel Clough.
He was close to being a good manager, it's just that he was over cautious and happy to do just enough.
The football we played under him was decent (at least we passed to feet) but it was ooh so slow and too predictable.

I take issue with what he didn`t do, i.e sort out the central defender situation in the January transfer window, or use loan signings to address it during the season.

Clough didn't sign Maguire or Murphy though. Of his signings I think only Adams went for decent money. However, Coutts and Freeman are now proving their worth and Basham has been a decent signing. The problem with Clough for us was his don't lose mentality. As the big dogs of the division, we needed a manager who was going to set up to blow teams away like Wilder has. Clough's style is suited to being the underdog which is ideal for where he is now.

OK, so we know you are a massive fan of Clough.

This how I saw it.

Clough went on record as saying he wanted a smallish squad with some quality in it.

We DIDN'T end up with what he originally said he was going to do - we ended up with a large AND average AND bloated squad, which is why a LOT beat him with the stick.

As for left/not left a surplus, and this IS going to be a fucking rant as it's been raised before with others and you have raised it now.

There isn't a surplus, there never is a surplus...................who pays the fucking wages of players and staff? Money in doesn't cover money out at the majority of clubs outside of the premier league. I dread to think how much we lost in the Clough/Adkins seasons. We probably lost money last year and we'll probably lose money this season too.

I am really pleased Clough got Burton promoted - I am also really pleased he kept Burton up last season, as he is far from as bad as some on here think he is.

But will you fuck off posting about Clough - he is fucking history at our club - we have moved on. Go and post on the Burton forum.

Rant over.

cheers for that. Nicely restrained. Not.

In terms of the surplus, I was purely talking about transfers and signings, every fucking club in the fucking land have a wage bill.

If the lad and lass who own the forum want to cancel my membership I'd understand and would have no issue.

But really? wtf is it with people on football forums who get so angry at a question or a viewpoint.

For the record, I post on the Burton forum, the Forest forum, the Derby forum, the Sheffield United forum, the Brighton forum (as I occasionally go to watch Murphy the ex Blade)... in fact I'm so into football and chatting about football I post all over the place.

It does my nut in that I've got to be careful what I post in case someone totally flies off the handle, then if I dare respond in kind the place melts down. Get a grip, grow up and if you don't want to read what I post don't frigging read it, certainly don't take the time to reply. If all I do is get you angry, ignore me. FFS

Are you called Trevor? Clough is history, had some good times but couldn't finish the job with his BS tactics, lets talk about balls, passion, intelligence and success shall we, he's called Chris Wilder.

I'm with you on Clough but your response above is a little in the needless column. You should perhaps utilise your own advise to ignore the comments of those who don't agree. Without disagreement and people behaving like fetid fannies we wouldn't have a forum so careful what you wish for.

Oh and you did dangle the bait a little.

No but I am!

Clough replaced Murphy and Maguire with Mcgahey and Higdon. Nuff said.

Che Adams aside, the rest of clough's signings had no resale value at all.

It took a decent manager to get a tune out of basham, freeman and coutts, the rest have been binned off.

Who got a tune out of Murphy? Freeman didn't get so much time due to Brayford.
Just saying

I give him credit for the Adams signing, not the Murphy or Maguire deals.I would counteract this by pointing out the colossal amount of extremely well paid rubbish he assembled, which acted as a ball and chain around the club's neck. Even some of those that have worked out in the long term (Basham, Coutts) a haven't been given new long term contracts due to the huge wages there on. Clough lost the plot in his second season.

ALL you really want is for Blades fans to have some sort of wankfest over your hero over how much money he has apparently made from sell on clauses.

For all you know the sell on clause of Maguire may have been a bad deal with the Hull manager at the time, Steve Bruce saying "fucking hell, I've just had Sheff U's pants down with a sell on clause". CW might have got a better deal, might have got a worse deal - no one actually knows, but to come on wanting some sort of thanks for Clough is just typical of your morbid fascination with the bloke.

You should seek help fella. What are you on Burton's forum - Bridgeford Brewer.

Some of us can move on...............

Nigel Clough overall was distinctly average. He got us to 2 cup semi finals which we're all grateful for, but couldn't do it in the league with one of the biggest budgets ever in league 1. That said, Adkins was worse.

Wilder blows Nigel Clough's transfer policy out of the water

The OP has very legit reasons to follow/love Clough. We don't.
I distinctly remember not wanting him at the time his name was first muted and was underwhelmed when he was appointed.
That said,he wasnt the worst manager weve had by a very long way.
I wish him well.
I think he has huge issues as a consequence of being his fathers son and that must be desperately difficult. I dont think there is the slightest need to give him a hard time. He already has one.

You're reading too much into it Fulwood. I'm not after a wankfest over my hero at all. I was just interested to see if views had softened. From the majority of replies I get the feeling they haven't softened at all. Fair enough. You and others are entitled to those views, I don't think I'm trying or have ever tried to force my views on NC, just put my side across and my side sees things differently. Some will see that as based on football reasons as well as the obvious bias I've got. Underneath it all I'm a football fan who likes to think I know a little bit about the game, I'm not totally blinded by my history with NC

Despite the bias, I CAN and DO see some of the wrong/bad things he did. I can see that he could/should have done some things better.

I don't get the hatred, I don't get it at any of the clubs he's been at. I don't see him as having done any damage or bad things to any of the clubs he's been at and surely those clubs have had other managers who've done more harm.

The reason I occasionally come back and post is cos I've still got a bit of interest in how you do. I want no bad for the Blades, in fact it's entirely opposite. I liked you before NC took over, a proper club.

I think I've posted 6 or 7 times this season to say well done. So the aggression can't be down to my views on your club, your current manager who has been a revelation. It's purely down to the fact I think NC did a decent job and the fact I defend that record a bit.

Good luck next season, I'd put good money on you finishing above NC this time around and would be shocked if you didn't. I'd be happy to be playing you two season in a row though, cos that would mean both clubs had stayed up.

The original question wasn't meant as wind up at all. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

For those of us who aren't fully in the know about the background to you and Cloughie can u fill in the blanks?

Surely McCabe bought/ sold all those players without Clough's knowledge or acquiescence?

Why should Clough get the credit now?

The "don't lose" mentality tells only half the story tho.

The other half was that we played the most boring of football, even at home. It got to the point that I was disinterested and started to miss home games, because I was bored shitless

I was always going to renew, but as for looking forward to another season of Mr Clough, I was actually dreading it

After the initial euphoria of Mr Adkins appointment had died down, unfortunately we got more of the same and even a lot worse under his tenure. Adkins was equally as boring but without the results.

If I have to watch the boring, laboured and dull football like Clough brought in that second season I would seriously pack up watching the game, it was cringe worthy at times.

The only way we'd find out about his transfers is if every fee wasn't undisclosled, a very slim chance then.
