Harry Maguire.....

I have to admit, I didn't think he would cut it as a regular in the premier league. I suspected his lack of Pace would be his undoing.

But having seen a fair bit of him recently for Dull, he's been their best defender by a mile. His use of the ball has been excellent and their new manager is keen on them keeping the ball, which will see him improve further.

Certainly of the two Sheffield lads on the field yesterday, H was the better of the two. So on that basis maybe Hull could consider monies in the region of what Cahill cost Chelsea?

What does make the right decision actually mean?
You don't seem to be aware that there are no guarantees. If only it was so simple.

If Maguire was so good then why didn't the top scouts in Britain recognise it?
A PL club could have easily take a 8 million gamble if it was so obvious he was so good.
Also again you don't seem to be aware of finances. Hull tripled his wages.
Imagine the stupidity of a club forcing central defender to stay meaning they have no money to build elsewhere.

If a club offered 1 million for Louis Reid would you take it?
It was only 2 years ago people were saying he's a talent with a big future in the game.

Also remember our young startlet Jordan Slew who wanted a massive pay rise to stay.
We wanted to keep him but couldn't compete with Blackburn who tripled his wages.
The board got slated for lacking ambition and refusing to make Slew one of the top earners at the club.
Was that a mistake by the board too?

It's called...you win some and you lose some.
Yes but if you don't gamble you stay where you are, the skill is in getting the odds right and upside/downside risk.

Its nice to see that a centre back who is good in the air, technically very good and reads the game well is prospering towards the top of the game. Its is very clear that if you have the three qualities mentioned that you don't have to be the quickest for pace, which, no matter what we all say Harry is not.
The first five yards are in your head.
I always think that pace is useful when you you have fucked it up and you are trying make it right. Defenders that read the game very well never have to be the quickest.......

At present i can't honestly say we have a current first team centre back that reads the game. Maybe Wright?

Does anyone still call him Leadboots these days? Plenty used too.

Stupidity, the way he used to carry the ball out of the back line and go past players with ease was lovely to watch. Proper footballing centre half, the likes of which we won't develop again for a long time unless we're very lucky.

Another feather in the cap for the Academy? Created some bloody good players over the last 10 years....the sell on for Big H will pay the academy costs for a good while I suspect. But we really need to get our arses in the Championship so we can start seeing the benefit of these players for ourselves.

If Harry keeps putting in performances like he did against Chelsea, it wont be long before he gets an England call - especially given how dearth the country is for centre backs right now.

I hope we can benefit from that sell on clause. ;o)

Martin Keown is a scout for Arsenal, and said he'd been watching him for a while. Mags to Arsenal next summer, I promise

we created far fewer chances immediately post maguire. Best memories of him were watching him take the ball forward with an unmatched assurity and just waiting for him to pierce open the defence with a pass. One of the few centre halves I've seen that would routinely get the crowd on their feet. In fact can't think of another. Hugely influential in our play at the time.

Now all the media are wanking about big H... let's hope Hull hold out for 20mill when they go down and we'll be well in the money! (if stones can go for 50 anything is possible).

He'll have one year left on his contract in the summer but he'll still go for £10m+ as long as his form doesn't drop too much.

That'll mean at least £1.5m for us.

I was being told not so long ago on here that the academy was a waste of time and money.

just looked at the match so far on bbc sport maguire was the one who won the penalty, seems his forward runs are being rewarded by setting others up to score

Many of us didn't underestimate how good he could be and were slated for saying that £2m was nowhere near enough,

But hey... water under the bridge. Let's start making the right decisions when clubs come in for our best players now Wilder is here.

Can we make Trump in charge of selling players?

It was from a corner he basically dived and ref get it as a push in back. But he was praised the other day for his runs on TV. We were name dropped as 'sheffield' and then after a few attemps the united suffix was used.

If tight arse McCabe had only built a team around him, Walker and Naughton?

This is getting boring.....do you know how the football industry works?

We offer to increase Maguires wage from £5K to up to £10K based on promotion making him our highest paid player and he has the prospect of yet another season in league 1, a league that he'd out grown and was holding back his developement

Or does Maguire go to the PL and accept nearly £20K a week with much better prospects at Hull?
Think about it. What would you do?

You could have held him to the final year of his contract, made him really unhappy probably had a downturn in form and shown the other players that we are hard taskmasters and keep players against their wishes. Also after keeping him to his contract he would then be worthless to the club and was never going to resign as we simply couldn't afford his wages even if we had been promoted to the Championship, so he was always going to leave unless we could have back to back promotions to the PL.

The truth of the matter that whilst we're in league 1 we'll struggle to keep any good players.
Any players that perform well will always attract interest from above unless we get promoted ourselves.

Also the last time I heard many Blades asking us to build a team around a defender was John Bradford.
Many said there's no way we'd show ambition to sign him. Many said if we signed him it would gaurantee promotion but McCabe wouldn't do it becuase he doesn't want promotion.

And we all know how bringing back our talisman and cult hero John The Beard Bradford went.

People say he's a pig himself , can anyone confirm ?

He was definitely a pig as a lad but I'm not sure about now!
What the fuck does it matter, unless someone is questioning his commitment to us during his time here? Thanks Harry to me at least you always gave of your best, Thanks.
