Maguire was head and shoulders above the rest of the team last night. He really stood out as a quality, young defender.

I wonder if we take him for granted a bit? I read plenty of comments on here saying he's too slow, milk turns faster, he'll never make it at the top level but seemingly the fans of every opposition team pick him out as best player.

It reminds me of Lowton who was never going to be good enough for the top flight but has played every minute for Villa. Are we reluctant to praise our young players?

If and when Maguire leaves, I think we'll realise just how a good a player he is.

Not me I think he's a fantastic player.

If he had electric pace he certainly wouldn't be playing for us now, he'd be long gone.

Also you don't need electric pace as a centre half if you can read the game well, are good in the air (he is) and good at tackling (he is).

He had a comfortably good game for the England U21s I believe. How much more do we want from this young lad as we struggle to put together a decent side around him ?

I don't want to even imagine a blades team without him, I have nothing but praise for the lad, I won't be happy if he did ever leave.

I'll be a slightly "dissenting" voice then................;

A top young player, capable of playing above this level. BUT, his size and lack of mobility will mean he will always be limited and never be a really top level player. Maguire / Collins combo would get ripped apart in the Championship. Either one could partner a B rated Jags type partner.

Given no inward investment, we are going to have to wheel and deal. In reality, that means possibly flogging the likes of Maguire and Long in order to reshape the side.


Having said that, I doubt we'd get more much more than £1M for Maguire and half that for Long (a bit overrated right now) and given how we turned £1.25M from Blackman into a loan for Forte, perhaps we should just consider folding....

In Four Four Two magazine I think he was voted 9th best player in football league, only league one player any higher was Forrester I think?This was done by people from all different clubs voting for their top 3 players in the division outside of their own clubs. So obviously shows that most of the other clubs in our division rate him highly. His speed does mean he can sometimes be exposed, that is obvious, and he can make the odd clanger, but I see no reason why we shouldn't want him to stay with us for a long time. He will improve. I will be gutted when he is sold.

At times Maguire looks class - at times he looks slow and clumsy. I think his lack of pace will always hold him back because you have to be outstanding to make up for it and, at the moment anyway, he isn't. I don't want to lose him but I think he is a Championship player at best at the moment - and even in that division would need a quick partner alongside him.

Lowton has done ok - scored 2 cracking goals and looks good going forward - but his defending at times has been woeful and he is part of one of the worst defences I've ever seen in the top flight. Naughton has done better than I expected and looks good. Walker is class. Maguire is behind all 3 - and miles behind Walker to be fair..

I don't dispute that, but it is also a little premature to suggest he'll never make it at the top level.

I think he's quality, but if we are promoted we will need to bring in a new centre half with a bit of pace to play alongside him. He's been absolutely fantastic at times and he still has plenty to learn but I can only see him improving with experience.

He might make it to the Premier one day, you can never say never.

As for the Lowton argument... I'm with Deano. He's done well but just because he's played every minute in the 2nd worst defence in the league doesn't mean he's necessarily good enough for the top flight. He might be in 2 years, but probably not yet. Leigertwood's played more games in the Premier but nobody claims he's good enough.

To be fair to Harry, he is a totally different animal to the players you mention.I think he is a slow burner, he will improve considerably with experience. We should be building our team round him.

I don't see many, if any threads criticising Maguire. Many people just don't think he's going to be the next Rio Ferdinand, whilst accepting he's a very good player for us.

Harry is one of the few bright spots this season - CB is a critical position and he has shown maturity well beyond his years. Often when he has looked exposed it has been because the midfield has let runners go through and not tracked them.

im pretty much president of the Harry Maguire fan club, as everyone sitting near me at wembley last year will testify. he was our best player. hes just so confident and thats what any young player needs.

He does have his faults but to be fair he's still only a young un that got his break, because he's played a lot of games we forget he's still learning his trade.

Yes he does lump the odd ball forwards, usually once or twice a game, turns like a boat but for me he's been the most consistent player of the season*. Better than Collins who is playing like he just signed a new contract so feet up. And much more effort than a lot of the higher paid 30+ players we currently have robbing the payroll.

*Doyle been shite most of the year doesn't count as consistent!

Fair comment Coops. Harry was one of the better (if not the best) imo the other night, along with public enemy no.1 Doyle and Collins, whilst Porter carried our lone threat up front with his honest toil. He has some class to spare at this level and uses his frame to the full advantage to overcome his turning circle deficiency (once he gets a trot on he's quite quick for a big fellah), when he's gone we'll lament.....
On a slightly different note, public enemy no.2 - Jon Forte, is a player who is currently so low on confidence he's shit scared to receive the ball and this shows so clearly in his body language. Never have I seen a lad so limited by playing him on the opposite flank to his kicking foot, he seems to take an age to get it under and decide his next move. When he briefly went out wide left in the 1st half, his first action was to control quickly, make a quick decision to skin the full back and get a shot/ cross in. Makes you wonder....
