remember it well was on kop and couldnt see a thing played , was it on a monday night so we could play river plate on the weds ? leeds in next round the tc and nicky johnns show what i remember about that game was the 100s of leeds fans sat at the front in the south stand

I went to 3 games in 3 days.. Rotherham beat Arsenal 3-1 on the Tuesday between the Liverpool & River Plate games. I think Macdonald got injured that night & hardly played again! The Crystal Palace game was Woodys last home game & Varadi's league debut I think
answered my question about the mon

I was supposed to be back at my boarding school that evening for the beginning of my 6th year but my dad informed the headmaster at my school that we were on holiday until 2nd of Sept and he was fine with it :)

I was able to watch the home games against Liverpool, River Plate and Crystal Palace
You didn't miss owt SB they were the best bits of 78-79 and we all know how it finished under happy harry :-(

I seem to have memories of all the Liverpool wall being booked just before the free kick for not retreating, anyone any idea if I've dreamt that or not:confused:
You've not read the article, have you?

Strewth. You save newspaper cuttings for almost 40 years, tek a picture and post it on here for the delight of your fellow Blades and ........ :(

Young SEB on the John Street terrace, about level with Hamson when he hit that shot. Remember Liverpool pasted us, but couldn't score. Terrace was as rammed as I ever saw it.

Was my 2nd season as a young un at the lane and the first standing with all my mates properly in the Kop , 77-78 to my frustration was spent in the pen as my 2 older brothers who took me first season couldn't wait to dump me in the pen to get rid of me and make make off to the top of the kop where the best singing , surges & the odd battle occurred . Saw last season and a bit of Woody , but only saw TC in a Leeds shirt I'm sorry to say on the night of the 4-1 Nicky Johns show

The matches I saw that season were
Orient (h) Sabella's first touch was a corner kick that Stainrod headed us into the lead. Lost 2-1. Kitchen scored the winner against the team he supports
Leicester (a) Matthews scored the winner on his debut
Preston (a) - brilliant match. Sabella 10/10 performance and scored our 2nd goal in 2-2 draw
Liverpool (h)
River Plate (h)
Palace (h). Nicholas man marked Sabella, Sansom first caught my eye with a classy LB display. Last I saw of Woody playing for us. Lost 2-0
Oldham (h) Won 4-2. Our 2nd was a Matthews thunderbolt to the roof of the net at the Kop end. Our 4th was a solo effort by Stanrod against a club he would soon join
Stoke (a). Lost 2-1 to a team that went up at the end of the season but we were easily the better side that day
Newcastle (h) Paul Garner winner
Cambridge (h) Varadi gives us a 2 goal lead on a snow covered pitch but mistakes by Conroy gifted them goals and a Matthews screamer near the end saved us a point
Millwall (h) awful display. Lost 2-0
Blackburn (a) Awful display by both teams as rock bottom Blackburn win 2-0
Notts County (h) 5-1 win!
Wrexham (h) 1-1
Cambridge (a) My dad drove me and my schoolmate (from Belfast) from my school near Newbury to Abbey stadium and we stood with Cambridge fans. We missed Sabella that day as we lose to a Steve Spriggs goal which virtually relegated us

Another one on the short (but still too long) list of "Dad, erm.....why weren't we there last night ?".
As a 10 year old I still believed in the infallibility of Dad to know when home matches were...... I very much suspect we may have had cup vouchers included with our season tickets too.

Only went to home matches 78/79 SB as I was still a young un , think the Orient first game summed up season .. Liverpool match really the highlight , well happy harry delivered on his promise of getting us out of the 2nd division at first attempt .... to 3rd ! Remember the Leicester last game of season at the lane think finished 2-2 and you could here was Weds , Weds here come .

That palace match was my first ever 1st team match, lost 2-0 relegation followed and the rest they say is history

Gutted for you mate but don't be too harsh on him , my dad was pig fan , he tried his damndest to impart that on us nowadays it'd be a call to the NSPCC for child cruelty thank fuck my brothers werent !!
Hence me and my brothers always sang the loudest with the '' my od man said be a Weds fan song ... lol

Just remembered I also went to the 3-1 defeat at Charlton in December. Told my school I would be in Newbury all day but I caught the train to Charlton (also by tube from Paddington to London Bridge). Dave Shipperley (Neil's dad) opened the scoring, Varadi equalised, Flanagan scored two late goals

I used to see Varadi out drinking up our way but not for a while now always sniffing around owt in a skirt from 18-80 but a good laugh no wonder he was mates with Gary Shelton at Swillsboro think he's an agent now lives at Norton I think

He was just a bit vague when it came to midweek matches & wouldn't have realised himself we were playing.
Many memories of him driving like an absolute lunatic from Matlock to The Lane on Tuesday nights as he'd be at work late because he'd forgotten there was a match.
It was rare to see a W**********e round our way when I was growing up other than Eddie Hallam who had Riber Castle....... rest assured he showed up over Christmas 1979, so there was never any influence from the dark side.

Went to every game apart from Sunderland away, lost 6-2!! Terrible season after a bright start, Leeds (h) league cup 1-4, Aldershot (a) fa cup 0-1, Millwall (h) 0-2, Wrexham (a) 0-4 Notts C (a) 1-4 particularly depressing & of course Blackburn at home & Cambridge away sealed it !! Wouldn't have forecast that after beating Luverpool

Further to my post #8, I still have a few A3 limited prints remaining of my painting of the goal, signed by Gary.

Thompson, Souness, Stainrod, Speight, Neal and Hamson

I was a tad too young for that game, surely all you older lot are exaggerating. No flares, no smoke bombs no seats ripped out must have been like a pre season friendly.

My first ever match, Bramall Lane under lights magic and been hooked ever since.....too young! I suppose some of us are bigger Blades :D

You think we are so dissimilar?

One of the times I felt really good with my life as as Blade. It was the only time I ever sat in the posh seats, because I was helping look after the River Plate team. I sat next to God (TC) and Don Howe, and still have the autographed programme. The River Plate players had already arrived in Sheffield, and were amazed to to see us beat the European champions, and all the more determined to not go the same way. It looked that night if we were going to beat arguably the best teams of 2 continents in one week. How things fell apart. Incidentally, if any of you collected autographs at that time, and got Leopoldo Luque's signature at the Kenwood Hotel, check the handwriting. He was a small, cross-eyed man, and a group of lads ignored him and asked me to sign their books. The only time I have ever signed an autograph.

It was disallowed, Hamson's foot followed through the ball and caught the Liverpool player.Hamson was booked for "intent",said Rob Styles.
