Deseves his own thread if for nothing else but for me to say how wrong I was about him. When he arrived he looked lost, overweight, unfit and not very interested.

He's looking fitter, committed in the tackle, creative and every bit the player we need as a captain.

Hope he keeps improving and stays if he does

And a great drag back(?) to make the ball disappear from one of their players lateish in the second half.

He's pulling his weight now and hopefully there's still more to come.

You never gave me a thread when you found out how wrong you were about me;)

Top performance today. The change in style to getting the ball forward early with no playing it out of defence & through midfield
definitely suits his game better, as it does for Basham, Collins, Edgar, Mceverley, Done, Sammon and Sharp.

He's actually getting match fit. He'll continue to improve as he gets fitter.

Adkins has been vindicated for backing him earlier on in the season, despite being pilloried by many. You don't get experienced players on loan from the Prem unless you drop them straight in, fitness regardless.

Ditto from me. Humble pie warming up for my supper

reality check...........

Leicester fans say he is on 23K per week.

Yes he is getting better - we cannot possible expect the club to fork out anywhere near that.

Beard is on?
Billy is on?
lots of none playing players are on?

You could sign a whole midfield with backup at season end from the bottom two divisions and still have change - yet another popped his head above the parapet on Saturday - Roofe of Oxford.

we have all seen them this season at BDTBL - someone needs to get scouting and laying the foundations for some decent 3rd tier type players for June 1st 2016 and hit the ground running come August and start of season..................just the sort of thing most on here have advocated for the past 2 seasons - or do we continue to make past mistakes......players from above at end of Life

If we're paying high wages, I'd rather get Morsy in. We best not be signing Hammond at the end of the season. He's not the player he used to be and there are better players for less we can sign from this division.

He's approaching the end of his career though. I doubt he expects to get £23k a year from any club.
NA obviously rates him highly, not just for what he does during matches but his overall leadership ability. There were some comments during the Man U game about him 'mentoring' Scheiderlein and he's been involved with promotions for Southampton and Leicester.
I think one thing all supporters agree with is that we needed a leader. If Hammond is that leader then he's probably worth paying a bit more for. We can have a massive cull in the summer and, assuming we don't go up via the playoffs, build a team around the better players/characters like him Brayford, Sharp, Coutts and add some legs and flair by signing some of the better players in L1.

At the risk of sounding like a miserable twat...

It's good that Hammond is playing much better now than he was at the start of his loan spell but I still have serious concerns over his pace and mobility in a midfield two. It's also another signing which falls into the category of "decent player on the way down" that seems to ensure that we have got stuck in the League One quagmire for far too long.

I'll be happy enough with him signing until end of the season but I know I'll be hugely disappointed when we give him a three year deal in the summer as seems inevitable.

For all those saying we should get a cheaper option - thats a risky idea, as the fact that players doing it for another side doesn't mean they'll be good for us (recently Higdon comes to mind).

Regardless of how much we are supposedly paying him, Hammond is very much the devil we know

We should know better by now. Signing old, slow players on big wages is not the way to go. Signing younger players, especially from our own division, who are playing well now on smaller wages is the the route to take, even if it involves McCabe's natural enemy the transfer fee. You could sign 4 players of the right profile for 500k and in today's market you'd only need one of them to come good to get your money back and more. It's not a risky strategy. But we obviously daren't speculate to accumulate - not now, not ever. That's why we're still in this division. Never willing to push the boat out that little bit more, preferring to lose money every season we stay in this league instead. It's laughable really.

Adkins seems sentimental about Hammond and is overlooking the majority of his performances. He hung his hat on him long before we even signed him and probably doesn't want to be seen to admit his mistake. So it looks like we'll be paying more wages than necessary to be slower and more limited than we need to be in central midfield. Happy days.

I like the way Hammond plays.

I don't like the way the midfield of Coutts, Basham, Hammond, Woolford plays though. Honest enough, keep it tight mostly, but nowhere near mobile enough, not enough box-to-box or anywhere near creative enough in the final third, not enough goals from any of them, nor assists come to that.

If we are serious about promotion we need more from midfield.

I can live with the loan, a permanent signing not for me wrong age and more than likely what ever wage cut he takes will break our current level. Short term fix bringing in this type of player, the opportunity with numerous players contracts coming to an end in June is for a long term strategy buying players who will improve and hopefully have a resale value IMO.

But it's about balance. Bristol made the sort of signings we campaign for (Freeman, Agard etc) but they also signed some really experienced leaders with know-how (Wilbraham, Elliott). Hopefully Adams and Wallace will improve and offer us something and we can sign more good, young, mobile players (mentioned a few on the League 2 thread) or PL young players not getting a look in (Ikpeazu, Innis, Anderson etc.)

But those experienced players should always be influential and ideally not on massive wages. Character's more important than experience anyway. Experience should be one of the last things we look for when recruiting in this division. Brentford and Bournemouth went up with young sides and look at them now. Look at Walsall and Gillingham now. Experience is a good thing to have but it doesn't compensate for athleticism and ability, especially in this division. You'll get occasions when there's an older player who'll offer more than any younger alternative, then it's worth maybe paying out above average wages for a year or two. We thought Hammond would be one of these, but obviously we're Sheffield United so that was never going to be the case.

At one point the Dingles looked good with a team full of upcoming energetic young uns, that was until they lost a few games, their heads went and a serious losing streak began which almost cost squeaky his job.

I agree with 1danewhitehouse, it's all about balance.

From every report though there are no questions about Hammond's character. He's respected in the game a a solid pro and a real leader. Something we've been crying out for.

Yes he seems to be the right sort of character but then there's the small problem of his lack of pace and limited ability.

I agree about lack of pace but not lack of ability.
