Bumped into someone this weekend in a bus queue who I hadn't met before and unlikely to ever meet again and we started talking football. He said he was best mates with Ben Sheaf (Coventry City) - so Cov were their 2nd team.

Anyway, completely unprompted, he said that Ben Sheaf had said that Coventry were going to activate Hamers £15m release clause and he was on his way back to Coventry.

Might be nonsense, and I'm not ITK, but this is a rumour mill, so here's a rumour, make of it what you will.

Anything is possible but that'd make him the most expensive player bought by a Championship club that isn't in receipt of Parachute payments or Wolves when they went nuts

We paid £22m for him with no PL experience.

We then sold him for £12m? With 1.5 seasons of PL experience
Maybe, but he'd played in the Champion's League with Genk prior to joining us. We sold him for £12mil because his contract was running out, not because that's what he was worth from his Premier League experience. Hamer won't go for the same as he has 2 years left on his contract. We should get at least £20mil for him but not more due to being in the Championship.

Sounds like you bumped into a pathological liar. You should have asked what their username was 😄

Darren Smith confirmed the release clause is more than £15m. It’s a load of bollocks mate.

Not to mention, you think they could afford £15m and to match the contract he’s on at a club with prem tv money?

Lastly, there’s no way on gods earth Coventry could match what many other clubs who would happily pay such a low release clause would be able to offer Hamer in terms of a contact.

I don't know anything about this whole situation but it could be that Cov have a sell-on % and when you "remove" that from the release clause, it could bring it down to £15m just for Cov.

Ahhhh, this is one of those times when we get a £15 million bid for him and publicly reject it whilst at the same time saying we want £20 million

£20 million bid never materialises.

Then at the beginning of August the financial reality hits home, so we go chasing after the club that offered £15 million only to be offered £10 million.

And take it

No probably not

Yesterday you were calling us “Club Retard”.
Is everything alright pal?

When did that last happen?

Ramsdale: Arsenal offer £15m, we reject it wanting £30m and we end up taking £24m guaranteed with £6m in variables and, I would guess, Ramsdale waiving his loyalty bonuses.

Berge: we hold out for his release clause (£30m?) until he enters the last year of his deal, at which point we hold out for and get £15m from Burnley.

Ndiaye: we hold out for and get £20m from Marseille despite them offering £10m to begin with.

I can't see Coventry spending £15m on a player this summer, I'm sure the FA cup run gave them a little financial boost, but this would be out the ordinary for how they usually spend.

If Coventry wanna drop £15m on a player you've just got to hold your hands up and say fair enough.

It's not true though

We have form for playing the transfer game like that, but tbf, that was when we sold Harry Maguire (and maybe Stephen Quinn too) under 'sell it if its not nailed down' McCabe.

McCabe being the one who once came out and told the fans that we were categorically not selling James Beattie to Stoke City and that the 'shutters have come down'. 72 hours later he had been flogged. Fuck knows who's shutters the daft bastard had been shutting, but they certainly weren't fixed to anything at Bramall Lane that's for sure.

The Prince might not be perfect, but he doesn't seem to be one for selling players on the cheap. He doesn't seem to like flogging owt on her cheap truth be known.

The only thing that’s been sold on the cheap since the Prince took over is Illimans coffee table

I'm not here to justify it, and I have my own thoughts, but this is a rumour mill...

Bought for 15 mil with no prem experience, very good season in the prem (by our standards) 25 mill would be about right.

Sheff united logic, sell for 10 mill, spend money on giving Osborn a new deal and Lewis O'Brien

🤦🏻‍♂️

True,
This is why I still think that despite him not having two pennies to rub together, he's still the best Chairman we've ever had.

I know it's a low bar, but someone has to be top of it.

I mean, the point seems to have been made quite clearly above, but you've seemingly missed it.
Can you give examples of when have we under sold any player while under this ownership?

It's not happened.

if hamer is sold it cant be anything less than 20m surely fwiw i think he will be sold

Stating the fucking obvious - we don't have much creativity as it stands, but expressing surprise is pointless. We seem conditioned to shooting ourselves in the foot over and over and.......

It took Hamer a while to get used to a higher level of play as well as a system that often played him in the wrong positions. I'm not blind to his shortcomings but he has quality, something we lack.

You're right I must have, unfortunately not got time to read 1000 messages and most I did read were pretty boring.

You're forgetting we sold ndiaye and verge last summer and replaced them with hamer and souza for less off a fee despite the windfall of money from being promoted.

This time we are in a worse financial position pending a takeover from who knows (we've been here before with the Nigerian airline giant without a plane or a pilot.

Time will tell, hopefully I'm wrong but we will see

But you were talking about selling players for less than they're worth.
We got the thick end of £35 million for Ndiaye and Berge who were both in the last year of their contract and refusing to sign a new one.
That's a decent return, but he's never previously got rid of talent for less than what could be considered a sensible market value.
