Great referee today ...

I can’t believe some thought the ref was very good on Friday, each to their own and all that but I thought he was absolutely useless, any ref could’ve made the big calls on the night because they were blatantly obvious, he got a fuck ton wrong though as has already been pointed out, some bonkers decisions from the useless twat!

The kop had a very clear view of the backpass and reacted instantly with one voice
It got a touch off the end of the United players boot. Clear to see from the South Stand. Correct decision.

Having watched that incident back, I can see why Hamer was booked because it was a wild challenge - BUT why was the Sunderland player laid out , holding his ankle when he hadn't been touched - why did the Ref not book Hamer straightaway and didn't the Ref see the Sunderland player leap to his feet after the booking - yet another case where there should be retrospective punishment
I'm coming to the opinion that there is just no prospect of getting simulation out of the game by relying on refs to give yellows in real time.
They just don't take action , even where the false victim is rolling around claiming a head injury when the only possibility of contact was on his arse and they have said not even a foul.

Logical deduction means it's simulation.

If I was a ref , I would feel that the false victim is insulting my intelligence , and I would be getting out my yellow card to exert my authority - hoping that other cheats would take note.
But today's professional refs ? No chance.

So the only hope is retrospective watching of the games but that takes huge resources.
To cut down on the amount of footage for review , maybe clubs could be invited to submit details of one or two of the worst examples - perhaps only in the penalty area , at first - and these could be shown to refs to encourage them to take action in future.

Some might even be in favour of issuing retrospective bookings.

If things don't change , cheating by simulation will never be eradicated.

So their player passed it back to his goalie but because it got an ineffectual touch off our lads boot , it's not a backpass ? Didn't realise.

Yeah they also seemed angry through the game
Nothing like a good bit of anger to get the kop making some noise !
Sources were :
Our risky tippytappy in our own box
Unpunished Mackem simulation
Getting outplayed first half
The backpass
Other bizarre ref decisions (the old "you're not fit to referee" a few times)

I would have preferred it if VAR hadn't spent lots of time drawing lines to show a toenail was offside when I think they could have put their time to better use by identifying cheating - it could have been done retrospectively.
I'm not confident that clubs would be keen to 'grass up' opposing teams who have cheated them but if it did happen I agree that it would have to be a limited number of incidents.

Well that ref v WBA didn’t like Rak Sakyi, did he.

Booked him for diving when, if anything, it was a strong shove by their player, the shirt pull on him went unnoticed / unpunished

Away from Rak Sakyi, he gave them the drop ball when it should’ve been for us, pulled back our throw for taking from the wrong place, but didn’t punish their player for the same. Didn’t book their player for kicking the ball away…

Did I miss any others?

I think it was the first time in my life I have ever heard commentators on Sky actually say that a referee had got 3/4 decisions wrong and we should have felt hard done by.....

Worth pointing out that he wasn’t really biased as he was shite for both sides but we seemed to be on the end of more in key areas

Yeah I just dont recall ever hearing commentators commenting on how bad a ref was and how a specific team can feel like they should have had more decisions.
Yeah radio Sheff had an issue with him continuously stopping players to talk to players. Just didn’t seem to get much right

Yes I think we can all agree that his former name was more appropriate - Richard Head. Understand why he changed it.

Another player threw ball away got away with it, let them have a free kick what was in the D and they pulled it 3 yards back and he allowed it. Booked hamer for a shoulder barge, couple of their players dove and no bookings.

Did he get the drop ball wrong? It was the WBA player that kicked the ball that hit the ref. At this point he has to stop the game and and give the ball to the team that was in control of it, which was technically WBA. That the ball landed at our player’s feet is irrelevant, as the ball is dead from the point of impact on the ref

It was our player that hit it against the ref wasn’t it?

In the lead up to their equaliser a baggies player lifted a long ball down the line. We were stood in line with the touchline. This clearly curled out of play in the air and came back in. Lino or ref failed to spot a throw in to us.
