Good corners create goals

Corners are pointless, long throws are sniffed at, only passing along the ground allowed, no more long passes (sorry TC, that would be hoof these days), no contact now as VAR will catch you out, heading soon to be banned due to brain injury.

Should be fun to watch, be like watching subuteo with full sized models.

Thanks Sam but you’re not getting the England job back.

So in the future, Currie, Woodward and Morgan get consigned to that great garbage bin in the sky and we watch a team with 11 Raheem Sterlings instead?

No there'd have to be a couple of Asian lads, two Welshmen, a woman and a transgender person* in a wheelchair, to meet the FA's equality targets.

* I realise I might get flamed for this if they don't regard themselves as 'person' and prefer to think of their sexuality as an alien, amoeba or some other category.

How many goals did we score last season from decent corners?

What disingenuous nonsense.

Long passes, Currie and Hoddle style, to a teammate’s feet or into his stride, are a delight to watch. Aimless punts in the general direction of the opposition goal are grotesque abominations.

Spot the odd man out...

“Nowt Fancy...like Bassett.”. Muckanettles Shitecoach on his football philosophy.

The Hoofers are still lurking, anxious to reclaim their birthright, aren’t they?

Kick it Long; Kick it Hard; Kick it High.

Fucking hilarious. If you read my post in the context it was meant then you would have noticed that Woodward represented the corners, Currie the long balls and Morgan the physical side and the headers. But then you can't beat a good soundbite over an intelligent conversation can you?

He is preparing his sound bites for Jake Wright now Reed has left.

I suggest that we sign Maguire, Young, and Kane, and see if our corners improve.

For science.

And another one from a corner just gone in. Might just be a match winner for Japan.

Yes. The game has moved on. There’d be no place for a Morgs type defender in a side that wants to build from the back and retain possession.

Never saw Woody or TC but I’d like to think there was more to their game than corners and set pieces.

Absolutely right.

Very much so.

Currie played long passes. Wimbledon and Watford played long balls. One is a delight; the other a hoof. The respective purposes are totally different.

I find it difficult to have an intelligent conversation about playing for corners or long throws. I’ve seen it done. It’s awful.

Shall we keep a note of how many corners actually produce goals in the World Cup rather than simply raising an alert when one does? The percentage will be low. Corners rarely produce goals. That’s how it is.

Woody's speciality was his dead ball kicking and TC's was his long passes. They had other skills as did many others of that era but these particular ones set them apart. TC also had showmanship in his repertoire but that seems to have been eliminated from the game too.

As long as you have physical forwards you need physical defenders to stop them. Their ball playing ability doesn't come into it, all they have to do is pass it to a team mate who is a ball player. Ask Cloughie about Kenny Burns if you ever meet up with him in the afterlife.

You don't play for them, you just make the best of them when you get one.

You might want to ask him about this:

"If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd have put grass up there."

Not a hunter of corners and long throws, Our Brian.

You replied to the wrong post, try #50 instead which was directed at you. The one you quoted was part of a civilised discussion between me and BushBlade which you are welcome to join in the spirit of but not to derail.

(Your job is to win the ball and give it to someone who can play).
Back in the days of Kenny Burns pitches were like the Somme, it was crazy to try to pass out from the back and brute force was a permitted part of the game. These days you can’t just smash people like we used to do.

Even today, with the greater emphasis on coaching technical ability, there aren’t many players in the championship who are big and physical but can also play (like Maguire for example). These players quickly end up in the PL. So, by bringing in big lads, you risk diminishing our passing game. It’s not worth doing that just to score from the occasional set piece.
But if we do find the next Kane, a big lad with good technical ability, great, I’m all for it.

And overall, our delivery into the box could improve (from open play too, not just set pieces) and I expect it’s something the coaching team have identified and will be working on.

And yet another courtesy of CR7. Going to be a few posters eating a very sour tasting humble pie after this WC.

International teams only spend a small amount of time together and don’t get to work as much on defensive organisation like club sides do so they will be more vulnerable to corners.

Lame? It’s true. You’re obviously watching the games, do you not agree that the defending is shit? If we defended like that the team would get slaughtered on here.
