Some advice here...how old do you think is old enough to go to a home game? I am considering taking my 4 year old (nearly 5) to a game soon. He is in to his football and keeps asking to go...any experience or advice here? It would probably be on the kop but towards the bottom where it's less lively. I didn't go until I was 7/8 but I feel if he's got the interest then why not...
I think that’s the most important thing - “if he’s got the interest”.
I took my 2 boys for the first time together, when they were 6 and 9. By then they were both playing football and interested in it. What I didn’t want was for them to be bored and spoil it for me or others around me. We played Plymouth Argyll at home on 1st November 2008 and won 2-0. (Silent Blade can tell us who scored - I haven’t got a clue!).
I did warn them before that we were a team who will bring them more disappointment than happiness. I told them we rarely win anything, but it’s OUR team and we always support them whether they are good or bad, win or lose.
If I was taking them for the first time now I’d re-write that introduction. They are 18 and 21 now and both big Blades! (Not as big as Kevin McCabe obviously but HEY! that’s understandable).
I can honestly say it’s the best thing I’ve ever given them. An introduction to the most wonderful football club in the world as far as I’m concerned. And as far as they are concerned as well. They absolutely love the club and are proud to be Blades.
I used to wax lyrical over the Woody/Currie era to them and told them we were a very good team in those days. Their little eyes used to widen in wonder and they’d say, “Do you think we’ll ever be as good as that again Dad?”. And I used to say, “maybe one day”. Thinking I would probably not live to see it myself in all honesty.
So when I told them recently that this is the best Sheffield United side I’ve ever seen, you can imagine how I felt? I had a bloody lump in my throat.
That’s what Wilder has done for our club, for me and my two sons.
(Only problem is the wife insists on coming as well now!)
