Goals from outside the box

If anything it’ll be Michael Brown in 2002/03….scored some belters!
Yeah I was thinking the same but I can't recall a run of 4 in a row, I remember Mike lake getting a couple in consecutive games many years ago

I’m sure I recall reading that Wilder didn’t like people shooting from outside the box due to low xG…

It does seem to me to have a higher xG than passing out wide from a good central shooting position and allowing oppo defence to set their defence before putting in a poor cross/losing possession…

We seem to have started to score from outside the box much more regularly in the past few weeks 4 games in a row now, when was the last time we scored from outside box 4 games in a row and have we ever done 5 ( or more?)

The last time we weren't drilled not to take stupid shots I guess

I don’t have a problem with shooting from outside of the box as long as it’s with purpose. The ones that annoy me are when there is a wide passing option but they go for the 25 yard shot into row Z. If the chance is there go for it as it might go in or worst case if it with power and on target we are likely to either get a corner or a second bite of the cherry

John Gannon is an interesting one.

I seem to recall that he was a bit of a fans scapegoat at the time, but not sure why, as he had a decent left foot (not in the league of Hodges but then who was).
Crazy thing it was a right footer at Forest shorty after Zico’s goal if I remember correctly. Happy to witness both!

I'd like to seem him try and tell Gus not go shoot from outside the box 😂

I was in my teens, but you're right, he was the scapegoat. I don't think he was direct enough or physical enough and he seemed to play sideways. Again, it was a long time ago. He used to jog about whilst most of the play was either over him or down the flanks.

But that could all be irrelvant and it might just have been his long permed hair that people didn't rate

What was that other new move we did last game?
We won the ball in our half then passed long immediately to a player running forward. He carried on sprinting forward with the ball with 3-4 team mates also running full tilt towards the Stoke goal .
I haven't sent that in years.

Seriki’s goal made me feel nostalgic.

There was a special player in the early 00’s. He always seemed to score every time he shot outside of the box.

Later on he had an idea to perfect his free kicks, to equal devastation. That kid's name was Bobby Ford, and the shot he invented was the Bobby Ford Special.

This was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a statue of him in our carpark!

I was pondering recently on which Blades player during my lifetime has scored the most worldies/screamers etc. Bearing in mind TC and Woodward were before my time, I'd have to say Gus. Can't think of anyone else who has scored quite so many long range efforts since I started going to Bramall Lane in the mid 80s. I know Borbokis, Beattie and Norwood scored a few free kicks and Michael Brown and Jags scored some belters, but I can't think of anyone who is anywhere close to Gus. Am I missing anyone?

Plenty of Woody's screamers during his 14 years with us

Brown way ahead of Gus
