Andy Johnson finishing runner up in the Premier League Golden Boot behind Thierry Henry in 2004-05 with 21 goals for Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace were relegated that season which makes it even more bizarre.

Has there ever been a more anomalous seasons for us (or anyone else for that matter) than Michael Brown in 2002/3 when - in a career that was otherwise spent as a nasty holding midfielder - her suddenly scored 22 goals - something like 16 from outside the box. Looking back it’s so strange.
He always played in a creative role for us, as I believe he did for Man City as well. It was Spurs who converted him into a midfield hatchet man.

Chris wood popping up with 20 goals last season was almost as strange as Johnson.

He was box to box for us but im
Not sure I’d call him a creative/attacking midfielder before that year. I’d even argue he was still box to box 2002/3 as well which makes it even more insane

Mick Channon was the TOP scorer in the first division with 21 goals in 1973/74 season despite that Southampton got relegated

Lunstram in 2019-20 was an anomaly. Couldn't get in the side the previous season (in a lower league) and then suddenly a first-team regular, looking comfortably at home in the top flight. Then looking every bit like a lower-league plodsman in 2020-21 and thereafter.

Brown was a Swiss-Army-Knife of a footballer.

He had an eye for goal from midfield, always faced forward, went from box to box, was a great leader of the team (although not always selected as Captain) and could tackle and win.

We have not had a midfielder of his sort since.

Remember when Joe Willock scored 7 games in a row and then barely ever again?
