I’ve just been watching the highlights of the 1974 match with Everton and and it brought back to me how good the goalkeepers kits looked back in the day. Proper club colours apart from the obvious change of shirt but how good did they look.
Can anyone remember why and when we changed to the garish kits of today? I’d love to see a return to proper team kits for goalies.
I can remember there being a choice of green, blue and sometimes just occasionally, red shirts and yellow for international duties. Our keepers always seemed to wear green shirts but I think Sprake at leeds wore a blue one regularly but they were always with the proper team shorts and socks.
I‘m guessing it’s a commercial thing to flog more socks and shorts to the kids.

I would imagine its so they dont clash with either the ref, their team, the other team or the linesmans kit, when you take away that many colours, you arent left with too many that clearly standout except for garish ones like green and orange

Posted this on the old photos thread, a couple of people remember it... We had a full squad photo including all reserves and Kelly/Tracer/Mercer all wearing a pale yellow and black version of this -

Anyone remember it or have photos? I'm assuming it was a 3rd choice that we never used... Maybe 95 or 96. Possibly Kendell... Maybe late Bassett era, can't remember but it definitely had Nilssen in the squad.

I remember green being the usual colour for a goalkeepers shirt (and it always had number 1 on it).

There was one team with a noticeable exception to the green goalkeeper shirt, Grimsby Town. They didn’t wear green because of some old mariner’s superstition about green being unlucky.

Think that was the away GK top for the shirt in your avatar.

Sure Tracey wore it at Wembley v Palace.

Edit - he did

Not heard that before, but very intersting.

Goalkeepers never had a number on the back, it started with continental goalkeepers, Bert seems to think Yashin was one of the first.

Bert may be right. But I’m sure we had a number 1 on the goalie’s shirt at some point in the past? Who would have been the first United goalie to wear the number 1 then?

Learnt something new there, matlos and green. Believe Grimrsby's 'keeper wore red.
In days of 'yor' 5 colours for G'keepers, Black-White-Red-Blue and Green. Green was used predominately in England as only Plymouth Argyle wear green.

Bert can't remember Hodgy wearing no. 1, but no doubt Silent Blade will confirm.

The late and great Mel Rees in the shirt I wore as a ladScreenshot_20200318-222305_Google.jpg
