Arse and manyoo rumoured to be battling to steal him from us

Not really. According to the Sun.

Not that The Sun is any greater fount of knowledge of course...

The 3 million pounds quoted by the Sun sounds like excellent business to me!
I cannot say I was too impressed by Long in the games he's played so far. He could come good, and Danny Wilson says he rates him very highly, but I'm not too convinced at present.

If this is true, that 3 million will look better in the bank, in order to carry on paying the wages of those who we really need to keep such as Evans

It's only on very rare occassions that a goalkeeper is worth having from such a young age with no games to speak of under their belt.

If we're to lose anyone in the window for any kind of money then from a squad point of view Long is the name to go for me, especially as it's got to be cheaper to replace him with a better overall quality.

For me he's a good few years away from being a regular and the financial climate being what it is, money in the bank for him would seem a good deal.

I will bare my arse on the town hall steps if anyone comes in for George Long, in or around the £3M mark.

UTB

From what I have seen of Long, not only is he not good, he is shit. I rate him at about £20.

Annerston was it? lidl.jpg

Judging by his FA youth cup final performances, I think he's a very talented goalkeeper. Good height at 6'4, agile, wasn't afraid to come for crosses and made a few good saves. The Cardiff match was too early for him. The errors in the Exeter match weren't the sort of errors that put me off him as a goalkeeper prospect. I'd be sad to see him go.

There is a lad showing more promise coming up a year or so behind him.

however the story must be bollocks, no one in their right mind would pay 3 million for Long.

It could be another collosal bollock dropped on the same lines as Walker/Naughton. However, Naughton had at least a full season behind him and Walker might have only played six games but we could see he was quality. Like someone said above, we have to accept that at this moment in time players like Evans, Doyle and Collins are doing the business. If we can get cash in on the £1-2m scale, surely then we can have a crack at keeping the above mentioned players?

Plus if we can find a taker for Montgomery (more on a wages side of things than anything), then he must be allowed to leave too. I never thought I would see myself write a positive about Evans, but Evans Must Stay!

And your goalkeeping/coaching qualifications are....?

You could go through every topic and ask people what their professional qualifications are. Fortunatley, this is a football forum for everyday people. My opinion is Long is shit. You dont need qualifications to have fully functional eyeballs.

Three, wank on every occasion.

In your case it would seem that you don't need a brain either

Reality check. All the story actually says is that they've watched him. They'll have watched a lot of players. doesn't mean they'll ever sign them. Also the £3m price tag is one they think the club have put on him, not the price someone has made a bid for him at. Such a high price tag is designed to scare people away or more likely give that impression, as if someone does make a realistic bid for him then the club will consider it as they will for any player.

like the £3m we put on Slew. Didnt get that for him though did we?
Anything over £1m is good business and will allow us to keep Ched

Just remember the sell on clause

From what I have seen of Long, not only is he not good, he is shit. I rate him at about £20.

We are fortunate enough to have two of the best rated young english talents in goalkeeping on our books at the moment.

Whilst he's not ready yet and who knows, might never make it - Long isn't shit.

The other keeper mentioned in here is George Willis, I used to work at his secondary school and can tell you he's also a talented young lad.

Be good to see them both challenging for number 1 spot at the lane in a few years time.

They've both represented England at youth level haven't they? Must be good to gain an accolade such as that.

Whilst I would love to see Long become SUFC and England #1 over the next few years, I fear that he is showing promise that he won't fulfill. Granted, I've seen two matches, but I didn't see enough. If MUFC, AFC or AVFC offer £3m, we have to bite their hands off. According to many, we have the better prospect coming in behind Long with George Willis. Use the £3m wisely: get a more experienced challenger to Simonsen in (on loan, maybe? We do have a youngster coming through!), put some money towards ensuring Ched stays till the end of the season as his goals could be crucial and maybe spend some of the money on a couple more players that will improve us.

At £3m, I have to say take the money, Blades.

From what I understand George Willis is expected to be better than Long. If Manure need to pay our wage bill for the rest of the season please let them. Simmo has a few more years in him yet. Even 1 million for a kid who can't get a start, we would be stupid not to take. just please put clauses in this one!

My mate's a Shrewsbury fan, and told me a few years ago, and he said there was a young keeper that had been playing well for them. Alot of people said he was too eratic, but then he was signed by Man City, and now he's England's No.1. Not saying the same will happen for George, but why can't it?

It might, but £3m right now is far more important to the future of SUFC than the slim chance of George Long one day becoming England keeper.

I fear some of you are about to step through the looking glass:

“But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.

Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.

You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here.”

From what I understand George Willis is expected to be better than Long.

Keith Quinn was expected to be the best of the Quinn brothers and Dominic Roma was a highly rated England U19 international a few years back. It is often hard to tell until they are tried at senior level.

As Bergen points out, this about potential and nothing more. Standing out at youth level is only an indicator of future success and with a keeper the wait can be longer as they develop later. However it is more evidence that the academy is doing something right.

Interesting the academy has now switched emphasis from right-backs to keepers! :D
