CONFIRMED George Long sold to Hull City

If he’s good enough for Hull then why couldn’t we have kept him.

Given the apparent financial issues, would have saved some loan money.
Because our ambitions are greater than ‘being as good as Hull’. And it’s not proven he’s good enough for Hull yet. He’s been signed by Adkins, who thought Woolford and Hammond were good enough for us.

Would you be happy if George was our first choice keeper? I wouldn’t.

We may have saved the loan money but by doing so, we still keep paying George’s wages and miss out on a transfer fee.

But it’s relevant that Calamity George was rubbish. Game after game after game. Soft goals, butter fingers, fumbling simple catches, bizarre positioning, ‘saves’ that were in fact assists for oncoming strikers.

Oh, dem Bladey Blades...
FWIR most of the soft goals tended to involve Neil Collins :D
anyway GLTTL he’s better off elsewhere if this thread is anything to go by
you realise he’ll have an absolute blinder at bdtbl ??

I take your point. But I don’t think Hull would have less ambition than us as regards employing a keeper who can keep the ball out of the net at championship level.

On the other hand, sadkins is a buffoon, so if he rates Long then it’s probably worth letting him take long off our hands.

Personally, from what I’ve seen over the years Long isn’t a championship goalkeeper. He was a fairly decent shot stopper but was often a liability commanding his box. He had some decent games but they were outweighed by his calamity performances. Wish him well and though he occasionally got unwarranted grief i just don’t think he’s good enough. Obviously Adkins sees something the rest of us don’t....... but that wouldn’t be the first time would it?

I don't quite get this lack of "command of the area" that's been quoted so many times as his major shortcoming. The lad was 17 when he came into the team. He was hardly going to start gobbing off at the senior pros, especially when he had a bullying cunt like Collins in his face. Then when he turned 18 he had the additional burden of the fans at the back of him behaving like a lynch mob. If anyone of that age had the mental fortitude to withstand that kind of abuse he should have tried running for prime minister, let alone attempting to be a goalkeeper. I'm surprised he didn't end up in the nuthouse.

He was 22/23 when he was playing for us with over 100 games under his belt. Still mute.

Exactly, if Long is good enough for this league then its mental that we are paying money to Man Utd in some shape or form for Henderson. We are simply developing their player to either sell to us for a higher fee in the future or sell to someone else (Blackman being a prime example with loan fee). We have Eastwood, Long, Moore and probably Steele so it seems odd to be paying for Henderson. Henderson had a good season for Shrewsbury in League 1 and Long had a good season for Wimbledon in league 1 all seems a bit barmy to me
Maybe Henderson is better. How about that?

We are looking for the best possible players, not just ones that are "good enough for this league".

How do you know this? I sit on the Kop, quite near the front, and I never hear any of our Keepers shouting

If that was true, we wouldn’t be targeting first div / Championship players in other positions at the moment ( except that the budget only allows this).

Only 'THE FORUM' can decide whether or not players are the "best possible players" or "good enough for this league"

But reading on here about Gallagher, Hogan, Egan and Waghorn et al - possibly not :(

Obviously I meant best possible players within our budget. I didn't mean we are looking at Mbappe.

About as much as your 'reactions of the defenders' comment does, I'm sure you'll agree.
Im sure I wont as I see another Long dropped bollock leading to a defeat ,the crowd and Collins didn't get on his back because he was a good keeper ,Im sure you will agree.

George, in the main, was shit when he played for us. He’s now older, had a year being coached with and playing for the u23s and a year on loan at Wimbledon where, by every single account, he played well. So he’s obviously improved since we saw him last.
What we don’t know is by how much.
Wilder’s staff will have monitored his performances and seen him in pre-season training so they’ll have a much better idea about how much he’s improved than any of us.

They clearly think Henderson is better and George has no future with us. That’s all there is to it. I trust their judgement more than anyone on this board, and Adkins.

What?

The Long was shite because he had to play behind Collins proposition is a curious one. What about Collins and Co having to play in front of Long? Sounds like a cycle of calamity to me.

True he took plenty of dogs abuse and the majority was unwarranted but during the next five years with us that part of his game just didn’t progress. Good examples during the Adkins season were his brilliant performance at Bury when his reflex saves stopped us getting the mauling we deserved that night. On the negative side he was bloody awful at Gillingham and though not nice you could see why some people lost patience

Spoke to Atkins at Faro airport on Saturday. He wants him but said has a budget of £2.50.

I said double that and you can have him !!
Sorry, just read your post.

And in which room did you meet Adkins?
