George Baldock RIP

It is really strange. I am sure people I know are struggling to understand why I am so upset about someone I did not know pesonally or never met. It is a measure of the man that his passing has affected so many people so deeply and profoundly. For me, I think it is all about how George represented me and all the rest of us. The fact that he was so young makes it much worse. Chris Wilder called him a culture carrier and I think that is right. He was such an integral part of that amazing team that got us back to the Premier League and beyond. What made that team so special was their togetherness and their connection with the supporters. George was so influential in all of that. When you read comments from MK Dons and Oxford United fans you can tell he did that there too. For us he just wasn't part of a good team but one of what Dean Henderson ( I think it was) called a band of brothers when he left. I have supported the Blades since the 1960s. I loved the teams from the early 70s and the Bassett era. They made me proud of my club. George was part of a team that was possibly even better and even more loved. I think it is also his qualities as a human being and not just a footballer that makes his passing so sad. Starman - absolutely!
Same.

Laid flowers today and was welling up. It's crazy. He "just" played for team I support.

But he gave 100% everytime on pitch and "that's all we asked"

Been to pub with pig mayes tonight. And I said I'd cried, it's madness.

But tbf to each and everyone of them they got it.

The floral tributes at Lane are amazing. The shirts and words left are amazing.

Just hope he knew how much everyone loved him.

Once a Blade. Always a Blade.

Baldock is the epitomy of what it takes to be a Blades player. There's been others obviously like Bob Booker and we've had some great players in there too but Baldock got the club and the fans as much as anyone.

Dont know if we should retire the number or not, probably siding with not because id like to see others wear that number in his honour. Gilchrist is ironically similar to Baldock in many ways, he gives his all every match and is a favourite in the making.

I'm sure he knew mate.

I went down just after one, took my lad, a card and some flowers.

We had Starman on by Bowie as we pulled in the car park. As soon as I saw the tribute I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried. It was a very solemn and sombre feeling. It seemed strange being at the Lane on a Saturday afternoon in such sad circumstances. We spent about 15 minutes looking at the tributes and having a bit of time to reflect. It was sad to see my 15 year old lad who is at the age where showing any form of emotion is not the done thing was fighting back the tears too.

I felt better for going. Spending a little bit of time with the Blades family has helped me reset, come to terms with what has happened, and to pay my respects with dignity.

Correct me if i am wrong are the flagpoles still on the Tony Currie Stand roof. A flag with The Late Legendary George Baldock Picture on it His name and Starman on it would be a good tribute at this very sad time. or Name something Else at Bramall Lane.name the cherry Street car after Him. The club must do something.

I think putting up a flag with his face and starman on it would be a little corny and toneless tbh, flying the Greece flag would be the better option.

Just wanted to weigh in on this after a couple of days of reflection. The news about GB hit me like a ton of bricks despite having never met the lad, as I'm sure is the case for many members of this site. To me personally, i feel like ive lost a family member, a lad who has been such a massive part of some of the best times in my 20 years supporting Sheffield United. The outpouring of tributes from his ex united teammates, from Chris Wilder, his relatively new teammates from the greek national team, and figures all across the English leagues, just tell you what a great footballer and human he was. The fact that he leaves a very young son behind is the greatest tragedy of the entire situation. If you were to ask me, i would say United should retire the Number 2. Gorgeous George epitomised everything about our rise from league one to the Premier league in terms of his passion, commitment, dedication, talent and tenacity. And sing starman instead of the GCB before kick off against Stoke whilst we're at it 🔴⚪⚡️Rest Easy George. You were taken far too soon and the Bramall Lane faithful will never, ever forget what you gave to our club. 🕊

Full disclosure, I am an arsenal fan, whose son is a blade. He made me endure every home game last year, which cost me a fortune and of course was pretty terrible. (I must admit I have become somewhat fond of the club.)

Not many positives, but George's attitude was one.. you can tell by the outpouring of grief and the respects paid by so so so many people from so many clubs etc, the type of person George was on, and off, the pitch.

So, I have purchased a Greece flag and will adorn it with George's name and number, and will take it to beautiful downtown Bramall Lane on Monday and tie it to the railings as a mark of respect.

One last thing, in true "I ordered this when pissed up from Amazon style", the flag is fucking huge.

That's my worries, a game we need to win but what state are our players going to be in. It's going to be a tough night 😢
Especially as Leeds reported us for asking the potential buyers if ther wanted us to keep or release each player. Apparently this isn't allowed. I didn't know this & obviously our Management people didn't. My friend says ....We need to PASTE Leeds for doing this !

Mostly managed to compose myself so far, but after a few beers last night I ended up bawling my eyes out. It's very hard to explain to non football supporting friends or even some that do support other clubs if they don't have the same connection.

I've no doubt a lot on here will feel the same and have maybe had a similar experience, but I hope it helps to know that you're not alone
Ended up snapping at my wife Thursday morning because she said I've got a face like a slapped arse. I am genuinely gutted and putting it into words that will make someone who's not a Blade understand how big this news was seems impossible . Reading everyone's posts and the fuckin anguish pouring out reassures me that I'm not being dramatic.

I would love a statue of George to go somewhere in the ground of the photo of him sitting with a beer after promotion. I think in the dugout would be too much but would be great somewhere in one of the stands.

Tragic about George, but in my opinion we should not be retiring the No 2 shirt. For this generation he is a legend. But so was Len Badger for my generation (it was scandalous that he & Alan Woodward did not get picked for England)…. and I am sure in 30, 40 years time there will be another legend with the next generation.

Better we get his picture on the montage at the back of the South Stand with the other Legends of the club.

RIP Starman - we love you.

Good call from a post earlier - it would be a good tribute to sing 'Starman' before Stoke game instead of GCB. I've been trying to think of how we could enhance his song a bit to give it even more meaning.

Ok shoot me down....... corny I know, but how's about something like ...........

"There's a Starman running down the right, his name is Georgie Baldock and he's fuckin dynamite;

there's a Starman winning back the ball, he get's the move back flowing and United score and goal;

and he screams ------- let the Bladesmen party, let the Bladesmen party, let all the Bladesmen paaaaarty"

Don't worry, I won't give up my day job ;-)

Where's this flag funding page?

I agree a flag with Greece would be good. I am sure The Club will provide something for us to Remember George. He will always be remembered for the Fantastic Player He was for us. I am sure Every Blade will say a Pleasure to have seen George Baldock play at Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane.

I keep having a few tears about his passing & it is reassuring that this is affecting a lot of people who, like me, never met the guy.
I just feel this huge sense of sadness that what should have been the next great chapter in his life has been cut so short.
It was a delight to see Coutts come back the other week & knowing we’ll never get that chance with George is an awful thought.
God knows how his family and those closest to him just be feeling.
The Stoke game is going to be a tough but incredibly important day & I know those going to Leeds on Friday will make sure we hear the love for Georgie Baldock.

Living in Bradford I have not yet been able to get to the Lane and pay my respects. Has anyone heard anything about a book of condolence? I know MK Dons have done this and I think United should too. If they haven't already done this I would urge them to do so. I for one would like to leave a permanently recorded message that his family can see if they want to.

I don't understand my reaction to this news still. Just saw steelcitysnappers photos on Instagram of Bramall Lane and welled up. So much love in those messages
