Arguably our greatest ever backline (certainly that I've ever seen) that rarely got changed but for injury or suspension.

If we had these 6 players in their prime last season, we don't concede half as many goals as we did.

I'll watch in a bit, I know what I'll be like.
I was chatting to someone close to him at the club and they said that you couldn’t wish to meet a better person. He always believed that he should be given the the man of the match award and genuinely believed he should have been playing for England. It amused everyone around him and it made me laugh when I heard it, because every time I watched him I thought yes you are the best and yes you should win man of the match and you should play for England not because he should have got all of those all of the time but wtf it was his spirit that counted and that’s why he appealed to me. RIP George (you are and will always remain the best)

Kean Bryan shared this.
Speaks a lot to George's character behind the scenes.
Having guys like him, Sharp, Norwood and Basham was basically like having a second manager. We were very blessed with quite a unique bunch of great senior pros and dressing room leaders like these and it'll be hard to ever replicate

Can't add anything that's not been said already other than gutted. Thoughts and prayers with his family. So sad. A legend of the Lane. Feel for his family obviously. A one off in terms of connection with the club.

We had no idea how good he would be, did we? 😢

Amongst the immense outpouring of sadness and affection for George, this interview, his first as a Blade, made me smile. George was asked about his time while playing for Milton Keynes and a 'little
bit of banter' George had with Chris Wilder. I can only imagine that the chat, however brief, was fiesty, and quite possibly this may have factored into Wilder considering GB as a signing. If there's one thing that Wilder expects and that's a player with commitment, and we got that in spades with George. I just hope any young Blade with ambitions to be a first team player makes a note and duly delivers.

I don’t even think arguably tbh,

Has there been anything released from Chris, as I bet he’s inconsolable with how long he’s worked with him, he’ll have had no doubt a special bond with what they’ve been through.

I'd always assumed that Wilder and Baldock had crossed paths before the Blades because he went on loan twice to Oxford from MK Dons but that wasn't the case.

Wilder had already left when Baldock joined them.

Not just Wilder it will have rocked the club the core grounds staff, kit men any and every back room and public facing staff role you can think of all will have known him well not to mention the remaining senior and junior playing staff who will have known him.

Woke up this morning and hoped it was just a dream and it wasn't real. A great person and a proper Sheffield United player. Heartfelt condolences to Georges family and everyone who was close to him. Got in the car to go to work this morning and Starman was playing on the radio when I switched it on. Could not believe it. Just hearing the words There's a Starman waiting in the Sky just filled me up.

RIP George

Agree with Billy - it doesn’t feel real.

Can’t stop thinking about it.
I saw Billy's post when I was between sets at the gym and I was thinking about this. To people outside of this club\fanbase this will be just another tragic case of a young life lost too soon but to we of course know him deeper. When you think about it he had an amazing career with Sheffield United. Experienced heights of playing in the premier league amongst the best in the world, experienced the lows of relegation, travelled to some amazing stadiums alot of players won't get the chance to play in. Witnessed some of the best years in this clubs history and because of his dedication and obvious influence earned adoration from us all.

When all said and done his family can be bloody proud of him.

Oli McBurnie, who played with Baldock for five years at Sheffield United, said he felt sick at the news.

"I genuinely can’t believe you have gone brother, I feel sick," he wrote on Instagram., external

"One of the best people I've ever met, you were loved by everyone you came across. My heart is broken for your beautiful little family. Sleep well GB, I love you mate."

Way before they became professional footballers, England and Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell got to know George Baldock as they grew up in Buckinghamshire.

Chilwell wrote on Instagram: "From hitting the bars together when we were younger in MK, to playing each other in the Premier League. I am heartbroken. Rest in peace mate."

And former Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom, now boss of Preston, also paid tribute.

"Numbing to hear of George Baldock's passing, a man with so much still ahead of him in life as a husband, father, brother and son," he wrote on X.

"George was super person and fantastic professional who was admired and adored by all who worked with him.

"My prayers are with his loved ones right now. George, it was a privilege to have known you."

Must say, the BBC’s coverage of and treatment of the news has been so welcome. Running feed tributes today from the footballing world as the anchor of their England build up and plenty of input. Just goes to show what a widely liked person and professional he was.
