Ah Gibson, formerly bankrolled the club and got some success, but now doesn't

Short term success is all well and good, but I'm quite sure that counts for very little at the moment given they are in the bottom few of the league.

I'd rather we were just consistent all the time, finishing mid table with a chance of play offs, than go from high to low within a few years.

Middlesbrough may well be the next Leeds at this rate, and find themselves in the 3rd tier for a while. Hats off to Gibbo for bankrolling a bit of success anyway

Lenny. I've been reading your posts for more than five years now, and I can't bring to mind any occasion, even promotion ('limped over the line', I think it was..?) when you have actually been happy about anything. From your constant downplaying of every achievement, to your losing score forecasts (every game), it is your natural reaction to everything Sheffield United to write it off, make derisory comments ('Injury prone donkey' wasn't it for Rob Hulse?), or to meet what success we have with predictions of imminent failure. Believe me if we'd had the ride that Boro have had, you'd still be posting about what a shambles the club was, the squad, the manager, the tactics, the tickets, the marketing and everything else. Fundamentally, I think you believe with all your being that you could be running the club better than the current proprietor although you will never be in a position for us to test that hypothesis.

Gibson has done well for Boro, but he's equally shown himself to be human in the mistakes he has made and then compounded which leaves them below us, with the clock ticking on the parachute payment and a process of downsizing the wage bill still to be done. A man to be respected, yes, but not beatified for his good works...

Sadly very predictable. If you cannae deal with the points, resort to personalising, but twas ever thus.
I think several people on here could run the club better than it's been run since relegation Dunc, mebbes even your goodself.

What points? Were there any points? Maybe some of your 'question dodging' is rubbing off on me after all these years.

I was trying to find a reason why one chairman who has fucked up over managers, and seen his club relegated and lying near the bottom of the league against a background of quickly falling attendances is some kind of God in your eyes while another who has fucked up over managers, and seen his club relegated and lying near the bottom of the league against a background of quickly falling attendances is some kind of useless rogue. Sure Gibsons money has bought them longer in the PL, it bought them finals not semi's, and a run in Europe which we obviously haven't had, but I still dont see why he is worthy of deification.

As for running the club better, I'm sure as Strafford found out in S6, its an easy looking job that is immensely difficult. I'm happy for KevMc to have the reins in his hand.

Dunc, one club has no cup finals in 75 years, the other has was it four? five? in a decade, including winning one and going to a European final - that's before you consider some of the players they managed to get there.
You must be out of your noggin if you don't think McCabe would be feted, legendised, knighted, had roads named after him, babies named after him if he'd done half of what Gibson had done.
He'd have certainly been bigger than God in my eyes if he'd achieved some of that.
The irony is that your posts always reveal your own negativity, not mine.
In this case, it's about denying Middlesbrough's outstanding success and a lame attempt to compare McCabe and Gibson.
In reality, you don't think that much of United, you don't think there's much potential.
I think United have not come near to their potential in recent years - the only time they got close gave an indication of what could be achieved in terms of backing.
You, on the other hand, would be negative, look for reasons for failure, embrace it, in your own way revel in it. A walking advert for well-meaning but ultimately insipid mediocrity.
Not what SUFC should be about.

Haven't read all of the dicussion but can't believe some people are questioning Steve McClaren's credentials  Other than the England job (not that many would've done better) his record is pretty bloody good. The job he did at FC Twente was unbelievable and to get Boro to a European final was no mean feat either.

As for Gibson, I think most teams would be happy with him wouldn't they? I think we're getting way above our station if we can claim we wouldn't want the relative success that Boro have enjoyed given their previous stature. Fuck, I'd give an arm to see us getting to cup finals both domestically and in europe.

Built them a new stadium and pretty much bankrolled them for 15 years. I'd take it

I'd be cock a hoop for Gibson to be our chairman. All i was saying is that the decision he took a year ago didn't really work out for him. Southgate i'm quite sure would have got them into the playoffs, but instead he sacked him, and now they've got a relegation battle on their hands.
