Reading the tribute to Gary Speed by Richard Williams in the Guardian, he says that Speed left one of his clubs because, as club captain, he had been forced to give a half time team talk in lieu of the manager - because the manager was too pissed to speak.

The only controversial departure I know of was when he left Everton - manager Howard Kendall.

I had no idea (although the idea of Kendall being pissed is hardly revelatory).

I have heard stories about the half time talk in that 5-2 League Cup defeat at home to Stockport in the 1996-97 season. It was interesting to read in the Star that Kendall couldnt talk to the press after the game because of a "heavy cold"
