Games we dominated and yet lost

For the first 70 minutes against Bristol City we were dominant and yet unluckily ended up on the losing side.
What other matches have we dominated yet lost? I remember Oldham Athletic at home in 2012 being 2-0 up with 20 minutes to go and wondering if we would get four or five. Due to poor refereeing, ill discipline and bad luck we lost 3-2.
In the 80s against Middlesbrough at home I remember dominating for 89 minutes only to lose 1-0 to a last minute goal.
Some would say we were the better side when we lost 4-0 at home to Scunthorpe!

The Arsenal semi final in 2003, saw it a few years later and couldn't believe we lost. Surely we'd have beaten Southampton in the final?!

Middlesbrough at home in 1985. Controlled the game for around about 90 minutes, then lost in added on time to the only attacking move (as far as I can remember) that they made. Still can't believe we lost that game.

And Shrewsbury away in the league cup in 1983. I know that to some of our younger viewers this may be hard to believe, but we were actually the under dogs. We were in the division below Shrewsbury. That said, if you went to the game you wouldn't not have known it. We completely outplayed them. Kevin Arnott was majestic. But somehow we contrived to lose 2-1.

I can't remember us dominating Arsenal, don't get me wrong we gave them a real good game but dominated them... ? My memory could have gone but I am only 32...

And the defeat there in 02/03.

Other way round we went to West Brom and won 1-0 despite being dominated by them. We scored in last minute - Asaba.

This is the year we're making a habit of it. Brum, Norwich, Brizzle, should have comfortably won them all and walked away with a solitary point.

Even Forest away - the first 30 mins was an absolute annihilation of the opposition. Walked away with fekall.

Gillingham away under Bassett, 88-89. Absolutely slaughtered them. They had two kicks and won 2-0. Afterwards the Gills fans were saying how we were easily the best team they had seen and would go up -which, as you know, we did. Twice.

For the opposite case (games where we were dominated but somehow won), I'd suggest the home game against Coventry under Adkins. Here are a few observations from the game:

• Coventry were second in the league (we were mid-table), and needed the points to gain ground on Burton who were top.
• It's incredible to think of it now, but Conor Sammon started up front with Billy Sharp on the bench.
• McEveley got away with an absolutely shocking tackle that could have warranted six red cards and a twenty-five year ban.
• Coventry battered us. Long made some very good stops, but dropped the ball into our goal (after Neill Collins nudged it with his hand) though the ref didn't give it.
• Billy scored late on from a corner, which their keeper missed and then just hit Billy on the shoulder (I don't think he even saw it) before bouncing in.
• Coventry had a very soft red card in injury time.

Another one for the opposite way (albeit it was a draw), was Swansea away in 2008.

We got absolutely hammered from start to finish, before and after we went down to 10 men, then Morgan equalised in virtually the last minute with our only shot on target in the entire game. It was so undeserved.

Another one for the opposite way (albeit it was a draw), was Swansea away in 2008.

We got absolutely hammered from start to finish, before and after we went down to 10 men, then Morgan equalised in virtually the last minute with our only shot on target in the entire game. It was so undeserved.

Seem to remember it being a lovely finish from Morgan!

I think for once we're due to play badly, not dominate the game for once but win! Fans of both Fulham and Bristol City said they normally dominate every other team apart from us, who they suffered against.

We didn't. It was probably about an even game, I'd say, with us pushing forward for an equaliser in the second half.

Scunthorpe home lost 4v 0 ,think Speed was in charge .

We had played Derby on the Saturday and were sublime, beating them 1 nil at Pride Park.

I was really optimistic thinking this was the start of something good under Speed.

I went on the following Tuesday night with much anticipation. We absolutely battered Scunny, they broke away 4 times and the rest is history.

I remember walking out of the game shaking my head in utter bemusement at what I had just witnessed!

Sunderland 1990. Battered them. Beesley gave Gabbiadini the ball twice, he scored twice. It should have been our first win of the season.

The season we were relegated from the Prem in '94, we played Liverpool at home and I seem to recall slaughtering them for the 1st 30 mins without scoring. Flo's confidence seemed shot to pieces and eventually our inability to put the ball in the back of the net just seemed to drain the team of confidence. I think it ended up 0-0.
I'm confident we wouldn't have gone down had we not sold Deane to L**ds on the eve of that season, and given what the Premier League very quickly became, who knows where we might have ended up.

1979-80.... a season we were dominating until that day when we lost 0-4.

After that, we may as well have just not bothered turning up.

I cam e out of the ground fuming at how bad we played. My dad told me to celebrate the fact we stole a point, but I couldn't get past how awful we were!

Wasn't that the first home game with the new roof on the Kop (or maybe the first under floodlights)? Or maybe I'm just losing my marbles as I remember the series of corners well, but am probably inventing trivia like first time on the new kop under floodlights.

the 1-0 home defeat to Walsall last season.

After dominating the early stages and then falling behind on the break just before half time, as the second half ticked by with goals disallowed, late penalty missed and a bucket load of time wasted I got the feeling we could've played while midnight and still not scored. Just one of those games but it still annoys me now as we were clearly so much better from start to finish.
