Saturday was the final straw for me. It wasn’t the defeat; it was the manner of the defeat. The fact that we never looked like levelling the game after going 1-0 down was soul destroying. That’s not the Sheffield United I know and that is the most heart breaking thing. I can accept failure when they show character and application, but we’re not getting that anymore. I always remember from my trips to the home dressing room the statement ‘Never Say Die’ above the door. That epitomises the club ethos, but this seems to have disappeared under the current regime. Maybe they should take a moment to read it every now and again.
I’ve just listened to KB’s after match interview on RS and he sounds like a man who is teetering on the brink. A manager can criticise individual performances, it is part of their job. But they should never cast doubt over the ability of their players so publicly. That is unforgivable and while it gives the supporters no confidence in their team, it also sends a very poor message to the players. He’s losing the stands and the dressing room at the moment and a lot of that is his own doing.
At one time I was a staunch KB supporter and I used to defend him against criticism from all sources. I always felt that he gave 100%, had decent methods and was a nice guy to boot. I was desperate for him to do well at the lane and get us into the PL. In the last 2-3 months I have opened my eyes and realised that he probably isn’t the right man to lead this team. We debate this issue regularly on here but I don’t think anyone can now deny that we should be doing so much better. Anyone who does is kidding themselves.
All the enthusiasm I normally have for the Blades has been sapped from me. I’ve been patient, like many other supporters for 20 years (others have waited longer), but no matter what happens the club can never seem to get it right for the long term. It just ebbs and flows every couple of seasons and it tires me to be quite honest. That is why I won’t be renewing a season ticket whilst the club and team is being managed this way. Saturday made up my mind. I will not be attending any more away games this season and will attend the home ones purely because my ticket has been paid for. I will just sit and see our mid-table finish pan out. After all, it’s a good excuse for a pint of magnet on a Saturday.
Until the club shows it wants to move in the right direction and changes the management, this will be my last post on the forum. I just don’t have the inclination to slate or debate the club anymore – I’ve quite simply had enough. Best wishes to all my fellow Blades on here. I hope we eventually get what our time and investment deserves.
See you around!
