Having watched Wilder's pre match presser earlier, a lot of forum talk has focussed on the potential incoming freebie and squad space debacle, but another section of it really worried me...

The talk of 'managing' players through to the Stoke game and subsequent International break.

How on earth are we here again? 5 league games into a season and we are fire fighting game by game with the team selection - pretty much all of which is based around fitness levels.

Every substitution we make (or at least 90% of them) is fitness related, not tactical - we are FIVE GAMES IN!

Half the starting line up against Norwich couldn't manage the full 90, with the Campbell and BBD 'Gassing out' after 60, and that's being generous. Don't even get me started on Jairo, it was plain to see on Tuesday that the lad is a stone over and yards too slow, yet he started on Saturday, rinse and repeat!

If we'd have anything like a half decent summer fitness levels wouldn't even be on the agenda, but we seem to be on a continuous loop year after year, patching up and getting by.

One of the Chairmen has made his fortune in health as well, what's going on there?!

I'm worried, this could end up being a very long, painful season.

The most annoying thing about our lack of fitness is that it doesn't cost millions to get right.

We clearly don't spend any of the week on tactics, so just get them running.

Being able to comfortably complete 90 mins of football should be the bare minimum for a professional.

Funnily enough, that used to be Wilders mantra about the bare minimum, but that's not the case anymore, not for 90minutes anyway,he's had to compromise for some reason

The general fitness levels of the squad have been an issue for some time now.

It's weird because back in the days of Basham and Baldock the energy levels and work rate were things we were always praised for.

What changed?
The guy responsible for fitness, I think, is Dr Tom Little. I'm pretty sure he joined from Preston some time during Hecky's reign.

We have a new(ish) chap as Head of Medicine, Dr Bryan English, supported by Dr Alex Worthington. Dr Tom Little is Head of Performance which I guess is day to day fitness like you say.

There’s quite a lot of articles and interviews out there with Dr English, he’s worked in the PL and Championship for over 20 years including 7 years as Head of Medicine at Chelsea between 2005 and 2012. He’s been with United 2 years but doesn’t seem to be able to stem the injuries, perhaps we just buy damaged goods!

We appear to be the only professional football club to offer players flexible working where they can turn up anywhere between 15 minutes after kick off and leave anywhere upto 30 minutes before the final whistle but they must do their core minutes from 15th to 60th

I think it's less about bad training and not getting them running to fitness and more the recruitment is shocking.

No amount of fitness training will get these lot to be able to complete 90 mins at full tilt. If we do they will break down and be out for the season. Bamford, Phillips, Jairo etc all have records of long injuries when managers don't 'manage their load'.

We used to buy up and coming mid 20's with a point to prove. Players of the season at clubs below us in the pyramid. Now it's has-beens whose legs have gone.

Need to survive this year and clear them all out next summer.

Surely in the discussions with Jairo they could see he'd had a 'good' summer. We shouldn't have gone anywhere near someone with that level of self discipline.

Maybe the universe decrees that we have to have a fatty. Moose, Gus, Jairo...?

Back in Warnock’s day we had a fantastic firness coach ‘Dean Riddle’. He got the players fitter than I have ever seen them. Even the warm ups pre- match were amazing to watch. For a couple of seasons you could see the opposition wilting in the last 10 mins and we score a fair few late winners. Seems we need to look at that fitness conditioning again?

(Last I heard was Dean Riddle ended up at Seattle Seahawks doing fitness stuff)

We don’t tend to buy players on the up or hungry ambitious types, we buy players who are on the wind down or wilders projects that have gone off the rails at their last club, ambitious young players don’t need to be forced to keep for or get fit, they look after themselves because they know they need the stamina/fitness to move to the next level. We’re getting players who just can’t be arsed anymore, players who know they’re never seeing the prem and accepted it. These type have zero motivation to put in the extra yards or even look after themselves.

Because we’ve brought players in who aren’t fit enough for 90mins and / or lads who’ve hardly played in the months before we signed them and / or injury prone crocks.

The Universe doesn't decree anything. The Universe only gives what your consciousness desires. Maybe the club have been inadvertently manifesting fatties and unfit players? Probably need to get all the owners, directors, management and coaches together to do some breathwork and meditation sessions.

Last season I said on one blades group at least. That we were the most unfit unprepared unprofessional team I had ever seen in al my 50 odd years watching the blades. Nothing seems to have changed this season up to now anyway.
