Freeman, I apologise

Always rated him going forward and thought he was ok defending despite the pelters he gets but I do agree 3-5-2 suits him best. He needs a new agent as I think he has been badly advised before but back to football he Didnt just get in the box by accident for his goal he gambled and worked hard for a good goal ( unless he saw a Pokemon of course )

To be honest I think there is a lot more going off with Brayford than meets the eye, and it is not just a case of him neshing it.

I've seen him today, he was in Liverpool and I saw him get on the train I was driving back just before 5. He seemed quiet, subdued and to be honest he looked gaunt and ill. I've met him a couple of times before and he was totally different today.

For the lads sake I hope it all works at Burton for him, but personally I think something is not quite right, and it is worrying to see

He alluded to the effect of his Cardiff experience on his state of mind, which partly explained his willingness to drop a league to where he's wanted.

That leads me to have similar concerns to yours brownie. I hope he's well and Burton does him some good.

A ginger will always look a bit peaky when he dyes his beard and hair a dark brown.

Today Freeman was physically and technically better than his opponent on a regular basis. I've said before that he's wholehearted, combative and good in individual battles and he showed it today.

He also has good attacking instincts, not sure he can play wing back long term but if he does I can see him chipping in with a few goals.

In that system having a RCB with pace like Ebanks-Landell or Wilson can help him out quite a bit, it takes a bit of the defensive pressure off, and with three centre halves he shouldn't have to worry about marking as much, which has been a bit of a problem for him in the past.

One thing I can say with certainty, is that he offered more today than Brayford has done for a long time, from right back or wing back.

We're no weaker in the RB department - as long as Freeman keeps his head screwed on.

Good interview with Freeman here... http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk...-who-just-wanted-to-play-for-blades-1-8104877

I like this quote:

“The gaffer showed with his tactics that he knows what he’s doing, and he’s a great motivator too."

If he's saying that about the tactics then that probably means the other players thought the same. That's good news. When a manager shows he knows what he's doing tactically the players will really start to listen and pay attention to what he says. They'll develop respect, belief and trust.

My only worry is pace at the back.
Left and right backs cover for slow center backs and we have three of them.
When you play wing backs it's going to be harder for them to trackback and make interceptions.

I think we have decent pace at the back. Wilson and O'Connell can get about and now we've got EEL. Only time I've seen us get left for pace at the back was when Macdonald got past Wright.

players give different performances under different managers
here is a prime example as hes given a freer role of how one player can blossom from feeling more of an integral part of a set up
several players were stifled of showing their best under Adkins rigid system
Thought Basham also in the game showed signs of being less shackled

The signs are encouraging that somethings building,
the post match huddle looked more of a debrief than some banal lets all go whoop whoop nonsense
CW emphasising ,the pluses while they were on a high

I think we all knew he's decent going forward and many have advocated playing him right side of midfield in the past. He's very similar to Kieran Wallace in that he can offer us great options going forward but still question marks over his defensive abilities - in particular he used to give his man far too much space to get a cross over. I don't know whether he's improved on that but he's easily good enough for this division in my opinion.

He was playing well before Brayford took his spot and probably a bit aggrieved at losing his shirt. Ironically some of his better performances for us came at left back but shows he is a decent footballer. No idea why he got the stick he did from some fans. It's not as if he ever gave less than his all for us unlike some of the twats that have turned out for us in recent seasons.

Don't forget he's still relatively young so Wilder will hopefully be able to iron out any defensive deficiencies, after-all it's a position he knows fairly well himself...

If Freeman can be consistent he could be the 'surprise' player of this season. That would be a real bonus. We could do without having to sign another right back.

Without being clever,I have posted "elsewhere" on a number of occaisions that Freeman IS NOT a right back as he is incapable of being positionally good in that role. His natural attacking instincts and strength on the ball make him an IDEAL wingback.
I lost count of the times as full back he would rampage forward only to leave a huge hole when the move broke down and Flynn apart no-one really covered for him leaving us woefully exposed.
Whether CW will use a wingback friendly formation regularly remains to be seen.

Good to see him get the goal,I thought he deserved it...The penalty shout was debatable and could have scored if he could have adjusted his feet a bit more, and it doesn't matter if he's wing back or full back as he still makes those runs in the box...he nearly scored v Oxford after Duffy picked him out but couldn't lift it over the keeper.

Thought he did ok defensively ...got some good protection off Basham aswell.

I thought he warranted being dropped last season, despite his good form at the beginning, it dropped off and he was making mistakes.
Having said that, credit where credit is due, he played well yesterday and if he can keep that level of performance going we will be ok.
Think he's best suited to wing back, but will do a job in a back four.
Big question for me is if he can keep to that level and get rid of the lapses in concentration, bit of confidence and encouragement from wilder and I hope he will be the solution in that position.

It matters a lot if he`s Full Back.
He`s a very poor Full Back. That`s the whole point.

Yeah, I feel a bit silly now slagging him off last season. Just shows what having a manager around who can bring the best out in you can do. Big credit to Freeman, great engine on him today.

Thought Basham just pipped him for MOM though, personally. Coutts not far behind.

I don't think we should be apologising to any of these type of players (Freeman, Coutts, Scougall etc).

For me these good performances is their way of apologising to us for the crap they have served up over the last few seasons.

He's not the best defensively, but part of that is because he gets forward a lot..I wouldn't call him poor..In comparison to other Full Backs in this league he's good enough, and offers far more than most going forward...I was just highlighting that he gets in those positions from either position.

No he isn't a 'very poor' full back at all, he was in the top 3 players on the pitch last week too - at full back.

I think the mentioned players' coming back into the reckoning shows that we should be careful about writing players off. When the team in general is not well balanced and can't find attacking rhythm, as has been the case the last couple of seasons, some players will look worse than they are, being asked to do things they're not great at while being unable to show the things they are good at. Too often fan put this down to laziness, or being shit full stop, when some tactical tweaks, some other player types around them can make a real difference.

Personally I'll admit I was sceptical about the formation we chose on Saturday. It seems to be a fans' favourite formation, but few teams manage to do well with it in the long term. On Saturday though, it worked well and it was a good way of countering Gillingham's diamond. Gillingham had no wingers, and their main threat was always going to be their two strikers + Dack just behind them. We made this area of the pitch congested, and they found it difficult. Going forward we struggled at first, but gradually our attitude and determination meant that we got the better of the game.

Not sure it's a formation we'll keep playing, but it's great that the players (after a mediocre start) managed to adapt, and full credit to Chris Wilder for coming up with a plan that in the end won us the game.

Very good point, in fact you've swayed me.
I'm now pissed off that he hasn't put that kindda performance in more often!

Freeman has made the League's team of the week.

He`s a poor full back. His positioning is gash, his tackling is gash and he`s always trying to get back from a forward run.

Chill out. He`s a good wing back who`s been played out of position. Crap full back.

Nobody has slated Freeman on here all the points you have stated was warranted.
But what can you say about his last two appearances they were top drawer.

We NEED another RB if playing 4 at the back.

We have a very good wing back if CW is going to play 3-5-2.

Freeman is garbage at defending as many have stated - wing back suits his skill level perfectly.

but yes, if he carries on he could well be the surprise player of the season.

Sorry. I was replying to Danny.

I`m over the moon he`s on the ball.
I watched him at Hallam pre season, yes I know it was Hallam, but his attitude and energy under CW was brilliant.
Hope he makes the shirt his own.

agree 100% about freeman - not about the chill out though as haven't read previous posts.

no prob, didn't want to upset danny - we are all entitled to opinions whatever his were.

UTB

Absolutely. I was reinforcing my opinion, widely shared that Freeman is a crap full back but a good wing back. Nowt else.
