In Deloitte’s latest review of football finances, they calculated that 99% of the revenue generated by its 24 clubs was spent on wages

Minutes before reading this I read this article on The Guardian website, which says:

Barcelona’s expenditure on salaries came down by €28m – because it had to. 70% of their budget went on salaries last season; it is down to 66%, but that remains high and there is still a need to cut costs

If Barcelona need to cut costs at 66% what does it say about Championship clubs at 99%?!

Minutes before reading this I read this article on The Guardian website, which says:

Barcelona Income is probably pretty stable and won't take a massive jump given they usually reach at least qtr finals of champs league and play in the top Spanish league. So its more about sustainability

Whereas these championship clubs are risking all to reach "the promised land" and receive a massive boost to their income streams via sky tv monies.

Still bloody madness though.

Sorta gives the feeling just before a recession. Debts are massive, margin's too small/negative. The problem is though as far as I see, the only way to reduce the gap is to drop wages. With emerging football markets like China & Qatar happy to pay stupid wages for players, will it just attract talent elsewhere for more money and leave the UK game with a lower standard?
